Dear readers of “Jelgava in figures”

We inhabitants of Jelgava are creating past, present and future of our city, the city for which I am very proud of due to Jelgava’s ability to maintain self-confident, active and strength in its inhabitants. The most valuable asset of Jelgava has always been its people - hardworking, responsive and interested. Experience is very important aspect to consider while paving the way towards growth, of course, as time goes by, secondary goals and tasks may vary and change through every year, however educated and strong new generation, well-organized infrastructure, clean environment, stability of population and prosperity will always be our top priorities. In 2018, we pioneered the education reform in the country, changing not only the infrastructure, but also the educational system. We have managed to be a step ahead of improving the business environment - in 2018 the average level of salary in the city has increased, leading to the increase of personal income tax in the city’s budget. Manufacturing, processing and active economic activities are the milestones of growth, we have always done our best to make the investors and entrepreneurs feel needed and welcome in our city. The business environment in the city is improving every year, new jobs have been created and unemployment rate remain relatively low. For the well-being of city’s inhabitants, the municipality undertakes the implementation of various projects related to the improvement of the urban environment and infrastructure. Most notable in year 2018 were the development of the Castle Island infrastructure, the new observation tower, as well as the construction of the roof of the Post Island skating rink. Also 2018 marked the beginning of several big scale projects - the reconstruction of the State Gymnasium, including its surroundings and stadium, the construction of the roof of the Post Island open – air Concert hall, the reconstruction of several access roads, the reconstruction of Nereta, Prohorova and Garozas streets. The renovation of the historical buildings on Vecpilsētas Street and establishment of the Zemgale Restoration Center, reconstruction of the building on Zemgale Avenue 7, where the Junda Children and Youth Center and Children's Library will be housed are our upcoming activities and are yet to come. The city is developing and demanding more and more intellectual resources – active youngsters eager to learn, wise, progressive entrepreneurs. I am convinced that smart city is fueled by smart and intelligent people, thus generating city’s growth and development together - it is the strength of Jelgava – its proud inhabitants!
