Signature: Summary As the first comprehensive work on the German colonial settler newspapers in Africa between 1898 and 1916, this research project explores the development of the settler press, its networks and infrastructure, its contribution to the construction of identities, as well as to the imagination and creation of colonial space. Special attention is given to the newspapers’ relation to Africans, to other imperial powers, and to the German homeland. The research contributes to the understanding of the history of the colonisers and their societies of origin, as well as to the history of the places and people colonised. -

(Hanco) Jürgens Abstract Every year the Rathenau Stiftung awards the Walther Rathenau-Preis to international politicians to spread Rathenau’s ideas of ‘democratic values, international understanding and tolerance’. This incorrect perception of Rathenau as a democrat and a liberal is likely to have originated from the historiography. Many historians have described Rathenau as ‘contradictory’, claiming that there was a clear and problematic distinction between Rathenau’s intellectual theories and ideas and his political and business career. Upon closer inspection, however, this interpretation of Rathenau’s persona seems to be fundamentally incorrect. This thesis reassesses Walther Rathenau’s legacy profoundly by defending the central argument: Walther Rathenau’s life and motivations can first and foremost be explained by his cultural pessimism and Prussian nationalism. The first part of the thesis discusses Rathenau’s intellectual ideas through an in-depth analysis of his intellectual work and the historiography on his work. Motivated by racial theory, Rathenau dreamed of a technocratic utopian German empire led by a carefully selected Prussian elite. He did not believe in the ‘power of a common Europe’, but in the power of a common German Europe. The second part of the thesis explicates how Rathenau’s career is not contradictory to, but actually very consistent with, his cultural pessimism and Prussian nationalism. Firstly, Rathenau saw the First World War as a chance to transform the economy and to make his Volksstaat a reality. -

SAMOA. Relgning K'ing.-l\ialietoa Laupepa, restored November 9, 1889. Group of 14 volcanic islands in the South Pacific, the chief of which are U polu, Savaii, and 'I'utuila. At a Samoan conference at Berlin in 1889, at which Great Britain, Germany, and the United States were represented, an Act was signed (June 14) guaranteeing the neutrality of the islands, in which the citizens of the three signatory Powers have equal rights of residence, trade, and personal protection. The three Powers recognise the independence of the Samoan Government, and the free rights of the natives to elect their chief or king, and choose the form of government according to their own laws and customs. A supreme court is established, consisting of one judge, who is styled Chief Justice of Samoa. To this Court are referred (1) all civil suits concerningreal property situated in Samoa; (2) all civil suits of any kind be tween natives and foreigners, or between foreigners of different nationalities; (3) all crimes and offences committed by natives against foreigners, or com mitted by such foreigners as are not subject to any consular jurisdiction. All future alienation of lands is prohibited, with certain specified excep tions. A local administration is provided for the municipal district of Apia. Apia in the island of Upolu is the capital and centre of government. Area, 1,701 square miles ; population, about 34,000, of which 16,600 ill Upolu, 12,500 in Savaii, 3,750 in Tntuila. The natives are Polynesians. There were in 1891, 235 British-born subjects (163 males and 72 females), about 90 Germans, and a few of other nationalities. -

MOBILIZING LIGHT AND SHADOW: POPULAR NATIONALISM, POLITICAL CULTURE, AND THE EARLY GERMAN CINEMA, 1895-1918 by JOHN PETERS MERSEREAU A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by J Peters Mersereau 2015 Mobilizing Light and Shadow: Popular Nationalism, Political Culture, and the Early German Cinema, 1895-1918 J Peters Mersereau Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This dissertation explores representations of the German nation as projected onto German cinema screens in the years between the invention of film in 1895 and the end of the Kaiserreich in 1918. This was a period of intense growth for the German film industry. From a novelty feature in travelling exhibitions at the end of the nineteenth century, film was a part of the everyday lives of millions of Germans by the First World War. Unified only in 1871, Germany was a young state and attempts to define, popularize, and harness its national image formed a central and contested aspect of German political culture. This dissertation argues that the conflicting cinematic representations of the German nation in this period should be understood within the larger context of Wilhelmine political history and that invocations of the nation were instrumental in the development of the German cinema. Kaiser Wilhelm II, political pressure groups on the radical right, foreign and domestic film producers, and, ultimately, military and civilian authorities of the German state all promoted cinematic visions of the nation that were overlapping, complementary, and conflicting. Kaiser Wilhelm II was Germany’s first film celebrity and personified onscreen a nation of monarchists and military might, yet his media-constructed political authority was overshadowed by his film stardom. -
