Round the world Mother’s Day falls on different days depending on the countries where it is celebrated. It is held on the second Sunday of May in many countries, such as Australia, Canada and the United States. It is held exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday in the Unit- ed Kingdom. Sundays are usually non-school and non-working days in these countries. Mother’s Day is an annual public holiday in countries such as Costa Rica (August 15, on the same day as Assumption Day), Georgia (March 3), Samoa (second Monday of May), and Thailand (August 12). Restaurants and cafes may be busier than usual as some people take their mothers out for a treat. The modern-day origins of Mother's Day can be attributed to two women – Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, who were im- portant in establishing the tradition in the United States. Around 1870, Julia Ward Howe called for Mother's Day to be celebrated each year. It continued to be held in Boston for about 10 years under her sponsorship, but died out after that. Other sources say that Juliet Calhoun Blakely initiated Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the late 1800s. Her sons paid tribute to her each year and urged others to honor their mothers. In 1907, Anna Jarvis held a private Mother's Day celebration in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, in Grafton, West Virginia. In 1908, she played a key role in arranging a church service that attracted 407 children and their mothers. A Mother’s Day Interna- tional Association was founded in 1912 to promote the holiday in other countries. Mother’s Day has grown increasingly popular since then. Many people believe that Mother’s Day is now largely commercialized, with card companies, flower shops, jewelry stores, gift shops, restaurants, hotels, and department stores advertising promotions and special deals for this event. Anna Jarvis, in her life- time, unsuccessfully filed a lawsuit to stop the over-commercialization of Mother's Day.

John Thompstone, ‘interim’ Vicar, asks - What makes a good village? According to the Daily Telegraph the following:  Well-regarded primary school  Pub  Post Office  Well stocked local shop/ small supermarket.  Sports facilities  Clubs and societies.  Proximity to major road/railway stations  Reliable bus service  Decent broadband  Employment opportunities locally Active church It is interesting to consider how our villages fares in such a league.

My own concern is focussed on the ‘active church’ bit.

Promoting holiness Ideally, a village church will be active in promoting holiness: drawing people – in the midst of very busy lives - to set apart space for

God: the worship and prayer that the church offers mark that road, and we do try, with the resources that we have, to make worship and prayer worthy of God and attractive to people.

Intermingling with the village We try to be active in promoting the welfare of the community: church people intermingle in the life of the village and, hopefully, contribute to what is going on. We regularly pray for the groups and places of the village – schools that our children go to, the Inn, the WI and Evergreens, the Cricket Club and Parish Council, the many services on which we rely, and the people on whose care and skill we place so much reliance: and, of course, those who are in a bad place at the present time.

Focussing on the World’s needs Active, too, in promoting the welfare of those near and far, who need help and support. We have recently begun to support ‘Caring Hands in the Vale’ which provides of food, bedding, toiletries, clothes and much more for those who have, in our locality, fallen on hard times.

A substantial part of our Christmas collections was sent to Barnabas Aid – which brings practical encouragement to Christian church- es and groups facing dreadful persecution – churches burnt down, whole villages displaced, clergy murdered – for no other reason than their being Christian. Pakistan, Iraq, Egypt, Syria… the list goes on of countries in which these ‘faith’ atrocities are taking place

TEAR Fund (The Evangelical Alliance Relief Fund.) This Lent, envelopes will be distributed amongst the congregation, inviting families to forgo one meal a week, or one luxury - for the 6 weeks leading to Easter. We shall focus on the church Kigezi, Uganda – its water and sanitation project – building rain water tanks, laying water pipes, installing taps, protecting springs. ‘It’ll take a miracle’ to achieve what needs to be done – but we can a play a part in making it happen.

Being small and insignificant Jesus said that the Kingdom of Heaven (to which our church tries to be a witness) is like the leaven that goes into making bread. Small and insignificant in itself, it may yet give rise to something much larger and more wholesome than itself. Our church is certainly small and not particularly significant, but we are trying to be active in all the areas I have mentioned. We would love to have more of you join us – and the Good Lord would like that, too!

An Open Forum For You – parishioners and friends of St Mary’s.

What would you like to see the church being and doing? What would draw you to its life? What could you do to aid its continuing existence?

Sunday, 16th March in Village Hall 10.30 Sunday Prayer & Praise 11.30 Coffee followed by Forum 12.30 Bring & Share Lunch 1.30 Annual Parochial Church Meeting (Reports on past year, Accounts, appointment of Church Officers)

Childswickham WI Report Members were given a sheet with a number of dates of forthcoming events including Craft Day at Wickham- ford on Feb. 15th, Cinema Outing on Feb 11th, Spring Council Meeting on 20th March at 7.30pm, and Group Quiz on 25th April. Competition winners for the year were Margaret Taylor for flower completion and jointly Peggy Porter and Maureen Taylor for monthly competitions. Mr Michael Cope, a professional falconer, was our speaker for the evening and he brought with him his beautiful 7 year old British barn owl called Ghost. Michael regularly gives falconry displays at Sudeley Castle. He started telling us about the special qualities of a barn owl. He explained about their amazing vision and

hearing and also demonstrated how they can fly completely silently. All these qualities are need to help them catch their prey– small rodents which they swallow whole! Mr Cope went on to talk about why the British Barn Owl is in danger of becoming extinct within 10 years. A survey in the 1940’s showed a population of 33-35000 barn owls in this country but a similar survey 10 yrs ago only showed 3000! There are several reasons for the decline in numbers, road traffic being the main one. Other reasons include : lack of nesting sites, poisons and pesticides, disappearing habitats and climate change. Ghost sat on Mr Cope’s hand throughout the talk and was very well behaved. At the end we were all invited to stroke her to feel how soft her plumage is. Peggy Maudsley gave a vote of thanks for his very interesting talk . Next Meeting on March 5th ‘From the Guildhall to the Sea’ by Mr David Clark. ASTON SOMERVILLE

From Canon John Thompstone, Acting Vicar of Aston Somerville and Childswickham. Tel: 01386 852930 email: [email protected]

St Mary’s, Aston Somerville - Church news

John Thompstone, ‘interim’ Vicar writes –

Currently, the daily readings for morning prayers are from Paul’s letter to Philippi. I read, with interest, his concept of what a church should be. He remembers his friends there with thanksgiving for all they have shared with him and the ways in which they have helped him. He constantly prays for them that the work God has begun in their lives might be brought to completion. He prays on – that their mutual love may overflow in the life of the congregation: that they may increase in knowledge of what faith means: and that their lives may be pure and blameless, showing a harvest of righteousness – which I interpret as doing the right things, in the right way, at the right time, because the church’s members are committed to Christ and following in his way.

Commitment to Christ is where it begins: our hearts and minds so touched by the Holy Spirit that there is a spiritual freshness about us that inspires the church’s life and be- gins to make of us people who are Christ like in word and conduct.

I continue to invite you to join us at the Holy Communion services on the 1st and 3rd Sun- days of each month. And, also, to feel a warm welcome to your sister church’s activities in Childswickham – especially the Pancake Party on Shrove Tuesday, 4th March, and the Mothering Sunday Service on 30th March. You will be most welcome.

I continue to be ‘interim’ Vicar until Easter and I am sure that the Team Rector will ex- plain the situation that will follow on, from then. Please let me know if there are any ways in which I can be of help to you.

John Thompstone, as ‘interim’ Vicar is always pleased to visit you at home. His contact number is 01386 852930 or Email: [email protected]

Whats in a name ! Any replies?

My one reader from Aston has replied

Val Svendsen writes

I thought I would give you some information about Aston Somerville and why it is so named. Aston does mean ' east town' and Somerville is named after the family. Sir Gualter de Somerville is believed to have arrived in England as one of the knights of William the Con- queror, having originated in Evreux in Normandy. He was given land at Whichenor in Staf- fordshire for services to the king. His two elder sons were Walter and William. Sir Walter de Somerville made provision for his younger son, Roger de Somerville, by giving him the manor of Aston in Gloucestershire. Roger bestowed the name of Somerville on it to distinguish it from similarly named manors.

More information about the village and the Somerville family can be found in the book 'Aston Somerville Through the Years' written by June Barnett and Val Svendsen and available in the library. Thank you Val. The obvious extension of the “ton” is what we know nowadays as “town” There are many connections and names we take for granted. Vine Street in Evesham was the site of vineyards, perhaps from those heady medieval days of climate change when England was experiencing a Mediterranean climate. Does anyone else have any connections ?

How many of you have Sat Navs?

Nice ad for that pub but where exactly is it . Just how many pubs are there around here. Even looking on the web page for the Vale of Evesham Pubs there were lots of pics and telephone numbers but no Post code. A double click and you will find the code. But you cant do that away from your pc and that mobile phone internet link costs if you go outside what google finds. So its find the post code game ! Why should I make a Will? It is important for you to make a will regardless of the value of your assets because:-  if you die without a will, there are certain rules which dictate how your money, property or possessions are allocated. This may not be the way that you would have wished, leaving your family, friends or favourite charities with NOTHING.  Unmarried couples and couples who have not registered a civil partnership CANNOT inherit from each other unless they have made a will. Therefore the death of one partner may create serious financial problems for the surviving partner  if you have children under the age of 18 or with special needs, you will need to make a will so that arrangements can be made for their care if either one or both parents die  if you have a substantial estate that may be subject to the payment of Inheritance Tax it may be possible to plan to reduce the amount of tax payable on your estate when you die you own all or part of a business. If you already have a will you should consider updating it if any of the following situations apply to you:-  if someone close to you depends on you financially and you have not included them in your will it is possible that they could make a claim on your estate when you die  you want to include a trust in your will (perhaps to provide for young children or a disabled person, save tax, or simply protect your assets in some way after you die)  your permanent home is not in England or Wales or you are not a British citizen but you have assets in England and or Wales  you live in England or Wales but you have overseas property, or  if your circumstances have changed, it is important that you make a will to ensure that your money and possessions are distribut- ed according to your wishes. For example, if you have separated and your ex-partner now lives with someone else, you may want to change your will. Getting married, or entering into a civil partnership after your will is made will generally revoke (cancel) it unless the will says it will not. Divorce or dissolution of civil partnership also affects your will, but does not revoke it. If you divorce or dissolve your civil partnership after your will is made, any reference to your former spouse or civil partner will be treated as if he or she had died on the day that the decree absolute or final dissolution order was made. You should seek legal advice in those circumstances. If you have a general query regarding any of the above matters please contact our Private Client Partner, Kate Perry, who will be happy to offer you further advice at [email protected] or on 01386 858107
