THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS REVISITING THE SUPERSTAR EXTERNALITY: LEBRON’S ‘DECISION’ AND THE EFFECT OF HOME MARKET SIZE ON EXTERNAL VALUE ANDREW DAVID BRYANT SPRING 2013 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor David Shapiro Professor of Economics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The movement of superstar players in the National Basketball Association from small- market teams to big-market teams has become a prominent issue. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.

NEWSLETTER #21 - 2005-06 THE CHICAGO TEST In terms of individual development, it is the goal of our program to put every one of our players in a position to play professionally if they choose to do so. In addition to the 13 NBA players we have had over the past decade, Xavier has had a tremendous success rate over the last 10 years in placing graduates in professional options overseas. For highly talented players, one of the most important steps in pursuing a professional career is attending the NBA's pre-draft camps in Portsmouth and Chicago. At Chicago, players are measured for height, vertical jump and body fat and put through workouts and other testing. Based on this testing, our staff developed Xavier's version of the "Chicago test". For Coach Miller, it is very important to see the progress and developments a player makes over his time here at Xavier. He identified 9 categories which our players are tested on as soon as they step on campus as freshman, and then every October and March thereafter. The categories are listed below. This testing has been very beneficial to our staff and it has had a surprisingly positive impact on our players. It is something they refer to often, and in a sense, look forward to. To them, the test emphasizes the importance of their conditioning and development. It has been a big reason for how far they bought into getting better in all areas. CHICAGO TEST - SPRING 2006 HEIGHT: VERTICAL JUMP: WEIGHT: MILE RUN: BODY FAT: 17's TIME: WING SPAN: BENCH REPS @ 185LBS: STANDING REACH: -It is important that year-in, year-out, the same methods are used to measure, especially with body fat.

  • Lebron James Breaks Silence on Darfur 'Human Rights and People's Lives Are in Jeopardy'
LeBron James Breaks Silence on Darfur 'Human Rights and People's Lives Are in Jeopardy' By Shelley Smith May 19, 2008 When LeBron James walked into our makeshift studio at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C., we had no idea what the Cleveland Cavaliers' superstar forward was going to say. We had asked for the interview for our "Outside the Lines" story on NBA athletes and political activism, specifically to see if he'd address why he declined to sign then-teammate Ira Newble's letter a year ago condemning China for its role in the genocide in Darfur. At the time Newble presented the letter, James said he didn't have enough information to speak on the issue, let alone sign anything. And he was ripped from coast to coast, by pundits, columnists and social observers. They all characterized James as a greedy, spoiled athlete who cared more about his business interests in China than the slaughter of a reported 400,000 non-Arabs in Darfur. To be sure, China's record on human rights issues was, and remains, a sensitive topic, especially for James' employer, the NBA, which has had its eyes on China for more than 20 years. And then add the pressure of James' $90 million contract with Nike, which has its own designs on the vast LeBron James was criticized for declining to sign a letter of Chinese market. James is so wildly popular protest, circulated by a teammate, over what the letter said there that he already has two China-only was the Chinese government's complicity in the humanitarian marketed shoes and his own museum in crisis in Dafur, Sudan.
