Internationally celebrated American soprano Ailyn Pérez will portray Marguerite in Lyric’s new production of Gounod’s popular opera. Said Freud, “Ailyn made a wonderful debut at Lyric in last season’s Celebrating Plácido concert, and we are delighted that she is able to join us for Faust when rehearsals begin in February.” Pérez will sing six performances March 3 - 18, with soprano Ana María Martínez singing the final performance as scheduled on March 21. -

Mindful that Puccini composed the work at the height of the Impressionist movement, I started looking at Paris street scenes of that period and came across Van Gogh’s Terrace Cafe at Night. The painting sparked a vision of the characters in the opera living upstairs from that cafe and coming down to hang out there, just like Van Gogh and the Paris Impressionists would have. A vibrant young creative team from across the United States have been collaborating since October to bring this original design production of Puccini’s most loved grand opera to Southwest Florida. Stage director, Josh Shaw, describing this new production explains, “La Bohème is a timeless story with themes as relevant today, as they were in the original setting. In the late 1880s Paris was filled with a concentration of larger than life artistic characters -- Van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, and others. In our production, we are imagining our bohemian lovers as moving in the same circles as the great Impressionist artists who rebelled against classical subject matter and embraced modernity, creating works that reflected the world in which they lived. -

London audiences have the chance to hear their acclaimed interpretation of Britten’s opera at the Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 30 November. The Norwegian orchestra and its Chief Conductor began their journey with Grimes two years ago at the Bergen International Festival. I am excited to say that I will be taking over as NHMA President for the next two Recording Secretary Terese Acocella years. We have so much to do, but we also have so many hands to help accomplish our mission. To be a part of the music experience here is to be a Corresponding Secretary part of something great. We are fortunate to have our students under the Suzanne Adams direction of such dedicated and talented faculty. Standing Committee Chairs We have gotten glimpses of the marching band’s “Star Wars: The Force Membership Nancy Gaidos Awakens” field show. We had a peek at our freshman talent at the September Freshman Tea. We can’t wait for our choral and instrumental students to “wow” Newsletter/Publicity Lynne Thompson us at the winter concerts. Ad Hoc Committee Chairs A new school year elicits mixed feelings. Our 2016 graduates are absent from our ensembles. Their parents have moved on as well. Richard Strauss: Four Last Songs A discographical survey by Ralph Moore I consider forty-six recordings of the Vier Letzte Lieder here, which is a goodly number, but by no means the total of all of those released in the nearly seventy years since their premiere in 1950. A survey cannot hope – or even want – to encompass every version but I have tried to include the most notable and have deliberately missed out a few which I know to be less than premium quality but have also reviewed one or two in the “caveat emptor” category as best avoided (see also MWI review index). These songs feature frequently in lists of personal nominations for favourite recordings, such as in the BBC radio programme “Desert Island Discs”. They are not a cycle as such, but all deal with the readiness for death and emanate a sense of calm, resignation and even transfiguration; I quote unashamedly from Wikipedia: “Towards the end of Im Abendrot, after the soprano's intonation of ‘Ist dies etwa der Tod?’ (‘Is this perhaps death?’), Strauss musically quotes his own tone poem Death and Transfiguration, written 60 years earlier. As in that piece, the quoted seven-note phrase (known as the ‘transfiguration theme’) has been seen as the fulfilment of the soul through death.” They are amenable to successful performance by a range of soprano voice-types, from the mezzo- tinged soprano falcon of Jessye Norman to the light, lyric sopranos of Lucia Popp or Anneliese Rothenberger, and although one or two sopranos have come a cropper in attempting them, there are many more admirable and even superlative recordings than failures. -

Beams Santa Fe Opera, 2012 Maometto II Triumphs in a Solid Season After many years of attending performances of opera, including all thirty-nine of Rossini’s works for stage, I occasionally leave a performance that is so compelling, powerful and moving that I find myself saying, this is why I still go to the opera. Such an occasion was the production of Rossini’s rarely encountered ambitious opera seria, Maometto II, given a truly festival-level performance during the summer of 2012 at the always-enticing Santa Fe opera. Indeed one could utter the same sentiments for the five-opera season itself, one of the more satisfying and artistically sound in recent memory, with its wide ranging and engaging array of the familiar, Puccini’s Tosca, to the esoteric, Karl Szymanowski’s bewilderingly symbolic King Roger. A Monumental Work from the Past In his essay introducing the opera in the Santa Fe program book, renowned musicologist and Rossini expert Philip Gossett calls Maometto II “one of the greatest serious operas written during the 19th century,” an assertion he has been making now for many years. Rightly so. I first realized the validity of this assertion at the modern premiere of the work in 1985 at the Rossini Opera Festival held each year in Rossini’s birthplace, Pesaro, Italy. The young Samuel Ramey was mesmerizing as the titular Maometto; the waif-like soprano, Cecelia Gasdia, a Gossett protégé, poignantly expressive in every wrenching phrase; Chris Merritt, at the height of his career, a thrilling, clarion Rossini tenor as Ann’s father, Paolo Erisso; and the exquisite rich-toned contralto, Lucia Valentini-Terrani (who sadly would die of cancer all too soon) in the trouser role of Calbo, Anna’s betrothed. -

World Premiere of 21St-Century Canadian Opera One of Many Firsts in Coc’S 2015/2016 Season
Embargoed until 6:30 p.m. EST January 14, 2015 WORLD PREMIERE OF 21ST-CENTURY CANADIAN OPERA ONE OF MANY FIRSTS IN COC’S 2015/2016 SEASON Toronto – The world premiere of a new Canadian work was one of the many operatic highlights revealed today at the public launch of the Canadian Opera Company’s 2015/2016 season at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The COC’s 65th season is once again comprised entirely of company productions, four of which are new to Toronto audiences, and features the COC’s first mainstage world premiere since 1999, COC premieres of opera rarities and the revival of classic masterpieces. The COC presents Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata in a new company production; the world premiere of Barbara Monk Feldman’s Pyramus and Thisbe presented with the COC premieres of Claudio Monteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna and Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda; the continuation of the COC’s Ring operas with the revival of its acclaimed production of Richard Wagner’s Siegfried; a new COC production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro; the COC premiere of Gioachino Rossini’s Maometto II; and a revival of the COC production of Georges Bizet’s popular opera Carmen. “With the 15/16 season we can explore with our patrons the vitality of opera through the centuries. The new season follows the evolution of opera, from its earliest beginnings with the Monteverdi pieces, to the world premiere of a 21st-century Canadian work,” says COC General Director Alexander Neef. “This season offers something for everyone while at the same time allowing us as a company to showcase the timelessness of opera as well as moving the art form forward.” The COC continues to bring opera’s most exciting emerging and established artists to its stage. -
