General information

Please note: The Brazilian Federal Police rigorously controls departures from of underage Brazilians. Minors can ONLY leave Brazil if accompanied either by both parents, by a legal guardian (guardianship is appointed by judicial decision) or under express authorization of the parent who is not travelling together with the minor. The form “Travel Authorization for Brazilian minor” must be completed in (2) two originals. The first original document will be retained and kept by the Brazilian Federal Police on departure from Brazil. The validity of passports varies according to the age of child: From 0 to 1 year old = valid for 1 year; From 1 to 2 years old = valid for 2 years; From 2 to 3 years old = valid for 3 years; From 3 to 4 years old = valid for 4 years; Over 4 years old = valid for 5 years.

For a maximum validity passport (5 years), applicants older than 12 years must attend personally at the Consulate General to be fingerprinted. Children under 12 years are not required to attend in person at the Consulate General to apply for a passport.

The Consulate General of Brazil only issues passports to Brazilian citizens. Children born in Australia of Brazilian mother/father must have their Australian birth certificates registered by the Consulate General of Brazil prior to applying for a Brazilian passport. All Brazilians under 18 years of age, born abroad and who have had their birth certificates registered by a Brazilian Consulate, thereby confirming their Brazilian nationality, must thereafter travel to Brazil with a Brazilian passport.

Requirements

• A$ 96.00 Australia Post Money Order for a new passport, when the previous passport is presented or A$ 192.00 in the event of loss, theft, misplacement, damage or destruction of the previous passport. Australia Post Money Order is the sole form of payment accepted. Money Orders must be nominal to “Consulate General of Brazil”.

• Online application form at https://scedv.serpro.gov.br/ , completed, printed and signed;

• One passport photograph - 3x4 cm, good quality, colour photograph (frontal, with white background). Photos must be no more than six months old;

• Previous passport (if applicable). In the event of loss, theft, misplacement, damage or destruction of the previous passport, Police Report and form at http://sistemas.mre.gov.br/kitweb/datafiles/Sydney/pt- br/file/Informacoes%20Consulares/passaporte/Form_Perda-Furto-Extravio-Passaporte(1).pdf completed and signed, will be required.

• Original or authenticated copy (by a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace or Brazilian Notary Office (tabelião) of the following documents:

o Brazilian birth certificate (for first passport application and for Brazilians born abroad); o Valid identification document from both parents. Valid Brazilian identification document from Brazilian parent;

The Consulate General requires up to fifteen (15) working days to issue a passport, counted from the date of delivery of complete documentation. Incomplete applications cannot be processed.

Changes of name for any reason other than or divorce are not recognized in Brazil without supporting Brazilian judicial decision.

For technical reasons, payments cannot be received on the last working day of every month and passports or other consular documents cannot be collected or dispatched on that day.
