Fearless Émigré: War Correspondent Sigrid Schultz Sigrid Schultz was both a migrant and an immigrant. Born in Chicago in 1893, she moved to Germany with her family when she was eight years old, remaining in Europe for nearly forty years. She returned to America settling in Westport in 1941 where she lived the remainder of her life. Proficient at languages, she worked as an English language teacher in Berlin during World War I. In 1919 her hometown newspaper the Chicago Tribune sought a Sigrid Schultz correspondent fluent in both English and German. Shultz got the job, becoming the paper’s bureau chief for Central Europe—the first woman to hold Schultz sent her stories back to the Chicago Tribune via telegram. She filed her most sensitive stories from various European cities under a pseudonym so as not to jeopardize her entrée behind the scenes of the Third Reich. A masterful investigative reporter, Schultz’ dispatches provided critical intelligence about Germany’s wartime plans. Göring called Schultz “the dragon lady of Chicago” and attempted to eliminate her more than once. She left Germany after being injured in an Allied Air Raid on Berlin then went to Spain, ultimately returning home and settling in Westport. Although she attempted to return to Germany to continue her work, she was denied re-entry. Schultz accompanied Allied troops at the landing of Normandy and was one of the first journalists at the liberation of Buchenwald Despite warnings from reporters like Sigrid Schultz who had firsthand knowledge of the Nazi plan for Jewish extermination, Jewish refugees were denied entry to the United States for much of the war. EDY: Conditions of Acceptance: The United States Military, the Press, and the “Woman War Correspondent,” 1846-1945 (Under the direction of Jean Folkerts) This dissertation chronicles the history of American women who worked as war correspondents through the end of World War II, demonstrating the ways the military, the press, and women themselves constructed categories for war reporting that promoted and prevented women’s access to war: the “war correspondent,” who covered war-related news, and the “woman war correspondent,” who covered the woman’s angle of war. As the first study to examine these concepts, from their emergence in the press through their use in military directives, this dissertation relies upon a variety of sources to consider the roles and influences, not only of the women who worked as war correspondents but of the individuals and institutions surrounding their work. Nineteenth and early 20th century newspapers continually featured the woman war correspondent—often as the first or only of her kind, even as they wrote about more than sixty such women by 1914.

Sorel briefly sketches the paths by which numerous women came to the profession, then focuses attention on about two dozen women and follows them through the course of the war. Garvey 133 Pages This thesis focuses on two of the largest foreign correspondents’ networks the one of the Chicago Tribune and New York Times- in prewar Europe and especially in Germany, thus providing a wider perspective on the foreign correspondents’ role in news reporting and, more importantly, how their reporting appeared in the published newspaper. It provides a new, broader perspective on how foreign news reporting portrayed European events to the American public. It describes the correspondents’ role in publishing articles over three time periods- 1930 to 1933, 1933-1939, and 1939 to 1941. Reporting and consequently the published paper depended on the correspondents’ ingenuity in the relationship with the foreign government(s); their cultural knowledge; and their gender.

    Chronology of the “house” at Sven-Hedin-Strasse 11 1904 01 November = After thirty years of steaming past, Wannseebahn suburban trains begin stopping at a new station, Zehlendorf-Beerenstrasse. The station, from 1987 07 March known as Mexikoplatz, was a joint project of real estate developers (Zehlendorf- West Terrain-Aktiengesellschaft), the local government of Zehlendorf and the Royal Prussian Railways. Trains go into the center of Berlin at the Wannseebahnhof, on the west flank of the major Potsdamer Bahnhof. 1908 = the famed Bankierzüge (Bankers’ trains) provide express service on the main line tracks into Potsdamer Bahnhof itself, speeding up commuter travel for stations between Wannsee and Zehlendorf, including Zehlendorf-Beerenstrasse. 1911 = Hjalmar Horace Greeley Schacht has a house built at Numbers 13 and 15 on Dessauer Strasse in Zehlendorf-West. The street is later re-named in 1927 and in 1947. The most recent name is Gilgestrasse. In Schacht’s memoirs, he states that he lived in the house with his family for 15 years and commuted by train to his banking jobs in Mitte. 1914 06 February = design of a two-story, single family Landhaus, as large suburban homes had been called in Germany, is commissioned for property at Prinz-Friedrich- Karl-Strasse 11. Prominent Schlachtensee architect John Kruse designs the villa, as houses of this type were beginning to be called. Kruse’s best regarded pre-WWI project is a schoolhouse on Dübrowplatz. The German Reich, united only in the previous generation, is thriving. Its products are sold around the world. Architects respond with “heavy” buildings that almost swagger.

    Der „Mitteleuropa“-Plan und das „Neue Europa“ der Nationalsozialisten in der englischen und amerikanischen Tagespresse Florian Greiner Die beiden wohl prominentesten antiliberalen Europapläne der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts – der während des Ersten Weltkriegs von Friedrich Nau- mann im Rahmen der deutschen Kriegsziel-Diskussion verkündete „Mittel- europa“-Plan sowie das „Neue Europa“ der Nationalsozialisten – erlangten nicht nur im öffentlichen Diskurs innerhalb Deutschlands Bedeutung. Als Be- drohungswahrnehmungen waren sie auch in den Ländern der Kriegsgegner präsent. Im Rahmen dieses Beitrags wird die diesbezügliche Berichterstattung englischer und amerikanischer Qualitätszeitungen („Times“, „Manchester Guardian“, „New York Times“, „Chicago Tribune“) untersucht. Mittels einer digitalen Volltextrecherche wird dabei methodisch eine Verbindung von me- dialer Inhaltsanalyse und Diskursanalyse angestrebt. So erlaubt die Arbeit mit Online-Archiven1 eine massive Ausweitung des bisher im Rahmen medienhis- torisch angelegter Untersuchungen üblichen Quellenfundus sowie die Auswer- tung langer Zeiträume statt der bisher gängigen Stichproben. Nicht zuletzt die Möglichkeit einer verfeinerten Suche mittels Operatoren, Platzhaltern oder Begriffspaaren bietet unter anderem neuartige Einblicke in die diskursiven Kontexte der beiden antiliberalen Europakonzepte zur Zeit der Weltkriege und gestattet quantifizierende Rückschlüsse bezüglich deren Intensität.
