However, very little attention is devoted to examining how historical consciousness affects present China. People take for granted that the past—particularly the landmark traumas of the communist decades— is a far-reaching historical discontinuity, and that China’s profound changes in every aspect of society have rendered the past increasingly irrelevant. However, this thesis argues that this assumption is wrong. This thesis explores the ways that Chinese filmmakers rearticulate the historical traumas which continue to affect Chinese society in the post-WTO era.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN EXISTENTIALIST IMPACT ON THE WRITINGS AND MOVIES OF ÔSHIMA NAGISA SIMONE MÜLLER Introduction Existentialism had an enormous impact on post-war Japanese intellectual history. The works of existentialist philosophers such as Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers and Albert Camus were analysed in great detail in Japan. It was, however, Jean-Paul Sartre who was most closely associated with existentialism. Sartre had an extraordinarily strong effect on Japanese post-war literature and philosophy, as well as Japanese art and politics. Sartre himself had a life-long fascination for Japan.

  • Magical Realism in Transnational Cinema
MAGICAL REALISM IN TRANSNATIONAL CINEMA CODY LANG A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN CINEMA AND MEDIA STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO August 2020 © Cody Lang, 2020 ii Abstract This project is an analysis of the magical realist genre in cinema, specifically its multiple forms found in transnational cinema. The status of magical realism in film as a genre will be questioned and this project argues that the concept is best understand as a transgeneric critical category rather than a genre in the conventional understanding of the term. Magical realism as academic concept has been discussed in-depth in literary theory and this project extends those discussions into the field of cinema. The history of criticism of magical realism is summarized as it applies to studying film with special attention given towards the semiotic differences between literature and cinema. Furthermore, this project explicates the distinct ways that magical realism operates in cinema in contrast to literature while also noting the shared aesthetic strategies between each media. Each section covers a thematic topic observed in transnational magical realist cinema: metafiction in overt and covert forms; the representation of historicity; and the representation of marginalized subjectivities, specifically looking at how magical realist cinema presents issues of class, gender, race, and sexual identity. The final thematic discussion discusses the possibility of utopian discourses in magical realist cinema, the attempts to envision a less exploitative social collective according to a variety of cultural and national contexts in late-capitalism.

  • Guide to Film Movements
This was originally published by Empire ( here is their Best of 2020 list) but no longer available. A Guide to Film Movements . FRENCH IMPRESSIONISM (1918-1930) Key filmmakers: Abel Gance, Louis Delluc, Germaine Dulac, Marcel L'Herbier, Jean Epstein What is it? The French Impressionist filmmakers took their name from their painterly compatriots and applied it to a 1920s boom in silent film that jolted cinema in thrilling new directions. The devastation of World War I parlayed into films that delved into the darker corners of the human psyche and had a good rummage about while they were there. New techniques in non-linear editing, point-of-view storytelling and camera work abounded. Abel Gance’s Napoleon introduced the widescreen camera and even stuck a camera operator on rollerskates to get a shot, while Marcel L'Herbier experimented with stark new lighting styles. Directors like Gance, Germaine Dulac and Jean Epstein found valuable support from Pathé Fréres and Leon Gaumont, France’s main production houses, in a reaction to the stifling influx of American films. As Empire writer and cineguru David Parkinson points out in 100 Ideas That Changed Film, the group’s figurehead, Louis Delluc, was instrumental in the still-new art form being embraced as something apart, artistically and geographically. “French cinema must be cinema,” he stressed. “French cinema must be French.” And being French, it wasn’t afraid to get a little sexy if the circumstances demanded. Germaine Dulac’s The Seashell And The Clergyman, an early step towards surrealism, gets into the head of a lascivious priest gingering after a general’s wife in a way usually frowned on in religious circles.

“Japanese Avant-Garde Cinema and the Question of Form: Diary of a Shinjuku Thief ” By Isolde Standish One of the themes of Ōshima Nagisa’s early writings was a concern with cinema as an artistic endeavour that should be reintegrated into social praxis, but not, in the terms of the commercial cinema as a coming to speak for the interests of the dominant culture, but rather, through a process of assimilation into critical discourse. As Ōshima’s critique of the independent, left-leaning, Dokuritsu Pro film, The Matsukawa Incident (Matsukawa jiken directed by Yamamoto Satsuo with screenplay by Shindō Kaneto) of 1961 indicates, he saw this potential in film not as “a direct weapon of social reform through direct political outcomes”, that is, through what we might refer to as propaganda or the didactic aims of Soviet-style “social realism”, but “as a weapon of social reform through indirectly reforming people’s consciousness […]” (Ōshima 1963). In broad terms, this meant reformulating the relationship between the filmmaker and film, the audience and film, and filmmaker and audience. These altered relationships rested on a renegotiation of the question of “form” in cinematic representations as opposed to plot line. This issue became paramount as a result of the aftermath of World War II and ongoing “holocaustal events” that characterised the twentieth century. It was in relation to the trauma of these events in the context of the immediate post-war period of European cinema that Gilles Deleuze, in his discussion of cinematic “form”, makes the distinction between “the movement-image” dominated by the controlling actions of the characters through space and the “time-image” which he states “makes perceptible […] makes visible, the relations to time which cannot be seen in the represented object and do not allow themselves to be reduced to the present” (Cinema II: the Time Image).

Night and Fog in Japan: Fifty Years On On 12 October, 1960, the day the socialist politician Asanuma Inejr? (1898-1960) was assassinated by a right-wing fanatic, ?shima Nagisa’s film Night and Fog in Japan (Nihon no yoru to kiri) was withdrawn from cinemas after screening for only four days. A Japanese film critic writing at the time, Aochi (1961), speculates that the withdrawal of the film was not, as reported, due to low box office takings but for political reasons. There was a rumour that the Head of the Sh?chiku Studios, ?tani Hiroshi, had been approached by the cabinet secretary with a request to withdraw the film from public screenings. Why, Aochi and ?shima both questioned, if it was a matter of box office takings, did the Studio subsequently refuse to re-release the film to student circles? As a direct result of the controversy regarding the withdrawal of the film, Night and Fog in Japan was the last film ?shima would make from within the studio system. In this paper, I shall argue that Night and Fog in Japan is a pivotal film, in that, it not only marked ?shima’s departure from Sh?chiku, but that in terms of its subject matter and visual-style it also marked the beginnings of Japan’s avant-garde film movement which reached an apotheosis in the mid to late- 1960s and early-1970s with such classics as Death by Hanging (K?shikei ?shima 1968), Boy (Sh?nen ?shima 1969) Ceremonies (Gishiki ?shima 1971), A Man Vanishes (Ningen j?hatsu Imamura 1967), Eros + Massacre (Erosu + gyakusatsu Yoshida 1970), Martial Law (Kaigenrei Yoshida 1973) Human Bullet (Nikudan Okamoto 1968) and Pitfall (Otoshi ana Teshigawara 1962) to name but a few.

Cannes International Film Festival 2000 By Ron Holloway Fall 2000 Issue of KINEMA REVOLUTION ON THE CROISETTE Scandinavia was a clear winner at Cannes 2000. But the revolution on the Croisette took place elsewhere. After Lars von Trier’s remarkable run of five previous entries (four times competing) in the Official Program -- to wit: Element of Crime (1984), Epidemic (1987) (selected for the Certain Regard), Europa (1991), Breaking the Waves (1996) (runner-up Grand Jury Prize), and Idiots (1998) -- the Danish director finally received the Golden Palm he so well deserved for Dancer in the Dark. Arguably he should have won it back in 1996 for Breaking the Waves and certainly he was the talk of the 1998 festival for proclaiming the merits of ”Dogma Manifesto” to all and sundry who would listen to this magnificent ploy. No matter, this time Dancer in the Dark was the clear favourite from the very moment the film packed the Salle Lumière for the 8:30 press screening on a Wednesday morning four days before the close of the festival. Originally Björk, the Icelandic pop star, was signed to compose the musical score for Dancer in the Dark. Then, by some stroke of good fortune, von Trier persuaded her to play the lead role of Selma, a Czech immigrant working extra shifts at a factory somewhere in rural America -- read provincial Sweden, for von Trier is afraid of flying. About to go blind from an hereditary eye disease, Selma needs every pennyshe can save for an operation to rescue her 10-year-old son from the same fate.

  • Nagisa Oshima to Inaugurate His Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art
rTh e Museum of Modern Art IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart CONTROVERSIAL JAPANESE FILMMAKER NAGISA OSHIMA TO INAUGURATE HIS RETROSPECTIVE AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The Japanese filmmaker Nagisa Oshima will make his first visit to the United States to inaugurate a two-week retrospective of his work beginning Thursday, April 20, at The Museum of Modern Art. Sixteen films by Oshima, acknowledged to be a cinema revolutionary, the most iconoclastic and protean of the Japanese cineastes, have been selected by Donald Richie, Curator of the Department of Film, an authority on the cinema of Japan. The films were made during the past 12 years and represent many different cinematic modes—narrative realism, surreal istic fantasies, documentary compilations and agit-prop stories. The director' s most recent film, "The Ceremony" (1971), will initiate the retrospective April 20, at 8-.00 p.m., when Mr. Oshima will make a personal appearance and address the audience. "The Ceremony" is a chronicle of a Japanese family from the end of World War II to the present, observed by the camera only on ceremonial days. Though his styles vary, Oshima has been characterized as a Japanese Godard because he maintains a consistently radical, anti-Japanese-establishment stance in his films. Oshima always takes a personal position, independent of any one party, and his work is infused with a skepticism defying any too-simple solutions to a problem. Among the issues Oshima raises are prejudice against Koreans, whose situation might be compared to blacks in the United States or Algerians in France; the rebellion against tradition and authority; the subject of poverty; the Chinese Cultural Revolution; and the exhaustion of the radical impulse.

In response to this support, leftist groups and artists staged repeated anti-war protests demanding an end to Japanese participation. At the same time, many of these artists were attempting to explore and critique the historical relationship Japan had with its closest neighbor, Korea. These two countries shared common cultural trends, a tense colonial history, and a contemporary period suggesting an unknown future for both countries. Criticism of Japan’s relationships to both the Vietnam War and historical Korea were not unrelated; while the Japanese government’s material support to the US was substantial, the South Korean government went one step further, providing foreign (non- Vietnamese) troops exceeded in numbers only by the US military itself. Considering the anti-war and anti-Korean figures in the Japanese political scene, untangling the contemporary and historical relationships between these four countries is difficult and fraught with tension. One filmmaker, Ōshima Nagisa, made several attempts to do so, linking the present situation in Vietnam with Japan’s own history with Korea, and its current relationship to the United States. Taking a critical stance against both Japan’s own left wing and the government’s cozy relationship with the United States, Ōshima sought to explicate Japan’s relationship as a complicit violator of Vietnam in several films, most notably Nihon shunka-kō (1966) and Kaette kita yopparai (1968) but also in Muri shinjū: Nihon no natsu (1967) and Kōshikei (1968).
