The Large-Scale Geometry of Right-Angled Coxeter Groups
THE LARGE-SCALE GEOMETRY OF RIGHT-ANGLED COXETER GROUPS PALLAVI DANI Abstract. This is a survey of some aspects of the large-scale geometry of right-angled Coxeter groups. The emphasis is on recent results on their nega- tive curvature properties, boundaries, and their quasi-isometry and commen- surability classification. 1. Introduction Coxeter groups touch upon a number of areas of mathematics, such as represen- tation theory, combinatorics, topology, and geometry. These groups are generated by involutions, and have presentations of a specific form. The connection to ge- ometry and topology arises from the fact that the involutions in the group can be thought of as reflection symmetries of certain complexes. Right-angled Coxeter groups are the simplest examples of Coxeter groups; in these, the only relations between distinct generators are commuting relations. These have emerged as groups of vital importance in geometric group theory. The class of right-angled Coxeter groups exhibits a surprising variety of geometric phenomena, and at the same time, their rather elementary definition makes them easy to work with. This combination makes them an excellent source for examples for building intuition about geometric properties, and for testing conjectures. The book [Dav08] by Davis is an excellent source for the classical theory of Coxeter groups in geometric group theory. This survey focusses primarily on de- velopments that have occurred after this book was published. Rather than giving detailed definitions and precise statements of theorems (which can often be quite technical), in many cases we have tried to adopt a more intuitive approach. Thus we often give the idea of a definition or the criteria in the statement of a theorem, and refer the reader to other sources for the precise details. -

Jones, Part 1 of 2 ) 1—14, 2012 The Work of Tom Farrell and Lowell Jones in Topology and Geometry James F. Davis∗ Tom Farrell and Lowell Jones caused a paradigm shift in high-dimensional topology, away from the view that high-dimensional topology was, at its core, an algebraic subject, to the current view that geometry, dynamics, and analysis, as well as algebra, are key for classifying manifolds whose fundamental group is infinite. Their collaboration produced about fifty papers over a twenty-five year period. In this tribute for the special issue of Pure and Applied Mathematics Quarterly in their honor, I will survey some of the impact of their joint work and mention briefly their individual contributions – they have written about one hundred non-joint papers. 1 Setting the stage arXiv:1006.1489v2 [math.GT] 8 Aug 2010 In order to indicate the Farrell–Jones shift, it is necessary to describe the situation before the onset of their collaboration. My favourite book “Abstract Harmonic Analysis” [1] by Ed Hewitt and Ken Ross contains both a proof of the Pontryagin-van Kampen Duality Theorem for locally compact abelian groups and the structure theory of locally compact abelian groups. Walter Rudin’s book “Fourier Analysis on Groups” [2] includes an elegant proof of the Pontryagin-van Kampen Duality Theorem. Much gentler than these is “Introduction to Topological Groups” [3] by Taqdir Husain which has an introduction to topological group theory, Haar measure, the Peter-Weyl Theorem and Duality Theory. Of course the book “Topological Groups” [4] by Lev Semyonovich Pontryagin himself was a tour de force for its time. P. S. Aleksandrov, V.G. Boltyanskii, R.V. Gamkrelidze and E.F. Mishchenko described this book in glowing terms: “This book belongs to that rare category of mathematical works that can truly be called classical - books which retain their significance for decades and exert a formative influence on the scientific outlook of whole generations of mathematicians”. The final book I mention from my graduate studies days is “Topological Transformation Groups” [5] by Deane Montgomery and Leo Zippin which contains a solution of Hilbert’s fifth problem as well as a structure theory for locally compact non-abelian groups. -

Math Object Identifiers – Towards Research Data in Mathematics Michael Kohlhase Computer Science, FAU Erlangen-N¨urnberg Abstract. We propose to develop a system of “Math Object Identi- fiers” (MOIs: digital object identifiers for mathematical concepts, ob- jects, and models) and a process of registering them. These envisioned MOIs constitute a very lightweight form of semantic annotation that can support many knowledge-based workflows in mathematics, e.g. clas- sification of articles via the objects mentioned or object-based search. In essence MOIs are an enabling technology for Linked Open Data for mathematics and thus makes (parts of) the mathematical literature into mathematical research data. 1 Introduction The last years have seen a surge in interest in scaling computer support in scientific research by preserving, making accessible, and managing research data. For most subjects, research data consist in measurement or simulation data about the objects of study, ranging from subatomic particles via weather systems to galaxy clusters. Mathematics has largely been left untouched by this trend, since the objects of study – mathematical concepts, objects, and models – are by and large ab- stract and their properties and relations apply whole classes of objects. There are some exceptions to this, concrete integer sequences, finite groups, or ℓ-functions and modular form are collected and catalogued in mathematical data bases like the OEIS (Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences) [Inc; Slo12], the GAP Group libraries [GAP, Chap. 50], or the LMFDB (ℓ-Functions and Modular Forms Data Base) [LMFDB; Cre16]. Abstract mathematical structures like groups, manifolds, or probability dis- tributions can formalized – usually by definitions – in logical systems, and their relations expressed in form of theorems which can be proved in the logical sys- tems as well. -

Abstract Commensurability and Quasi-Isometry Classification of Hyperbolic Surface Group Amalgams
ABSTRACT COMMENSURABILITY AND QUASI-ISOMETRY CLASSIFICATION OF HYPERBOLIC SURFACE GROUP AMALGAMS EMILY STARK Abstract. Let XS denote the class of spaces homeomorphic to two closed orientable surfaces of genus greater than one identified to each other along an essential simple closed curve in each surface. Let CS denote the set of fundamental groups of spaces in XS . In this paper, we characterize the abstract commensurability classes within CS in terms of the ratio of the Euler characteristic of the surfaces identified and the topological type of the curves identified. We prove that all groups in CS are quasi-isometric by exhibiting a bilipschitz map between the universal covers of two spaces in XS . In particular, we prove that the universal covers of any two such spaces may be realized as isomorphic cell complexes with finitely many isometry types of hyperbolic polygons as cells. We analyze the abstract commensurability classes within CS : we characterize which classes contain a maximal element within CS ; we prove each abstract commensurability class contains a right-angled Coxeter group; and, we construct a common CAT(0) cubical model geometry for each abstract commensurability class. 1. Introduction Finitely generated infinite groups carry both an algebraic and a geometric structure, and to study such groups, one may study both algebraic and geometric classifications. Abstract commensurability defines an algebraic equivalence relation on the class of groups, where two groups are said to be abstractly commensurable if they contain isomorphic subgroups of finite-index. Finitely generated groups may also be viewed as geometric objects, since a finitely generated group has a natural word metric which is well-defined up to quasi-isometric equivalence. -
