Albany Burns Club (Aka Glasgow Albany Burns Club)
Albany Burns Club (aka Glasgow Albany Burns Club) Overview The Albany Burns Club was founded by a few members of the soon-to-be-defunct Albany Bowling Club in order ‘[t]o keep up the old and valued friendships that were made on its turn’ (‘Club Notes’, ‘ALBANY BURNS CLUB’, in Annual Burns Chronicle and Club Directory, ed. by D. M’Naught, No. X (Kilmarnock: Burns Federation, January 1901), pp. 107-8). They formed their club ‘for the purpose of affording its members an opportunity of studying the works of our National Bard as well as meeting together throughout the winter months in a social capacity’ (Ibid). The club met monthly between October and March at the Trades’ House Restaurant on Glassford Street (Merchant City, in the heart of the city centre) with membership being restricted to 150 members. Tracing the Founding Members' of Glasgow Society of Lady
The ladies would seem to have turned their attention: tracing the founding members’ of Glasgow Society of Lady Artists In this book you hold, ‘Raoul Reynolds: a Retrospective’, our primary character’s timeline notes that his mother Henriette Aliès-Reynolds leaves her native city Marseille in 1880, to set up home in Glasgow, enrolling at Glasgow School of Art two years later. The art school, which had been founded in 1845 as the Glasgow Government School of Design, changing its name in 1853 to Glasgow School of Art, had been established with the purpose of teaching designers to contribute to the new buildings and manufacturing industries of the city. What kind of an environment would Raoul’s mother have found herself in? In 1880s’ the day classes were for mainly middle class students, the majority female, whilst the evening classes were populated by male students who worked in industry by day. The art school had amongst its courses, one for design in shipbuilding, which introduced her, through mutual friends, to her husband-to-be, Joshua Reynolds. At the time period that Henriette was at the art school, the premises, since 1869 had been ‘The Corporation Buildings’, on Sauchiehall Street, later better known as McLellan Buildings, where the studios were in first & second floors and attic, located at the eastern end of the building. It is noted by a later researcher, George Rawson[1] that the studios were ‘badly ventilated gas-lit rooms, with south facing windows’. It is not until 1896 that design and work begins on the art school as masterwork by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a then junior draughtsman for Glasgow firm Honeyman and Keppie. -

Muddle on Mackintosh John McKean looks below the shiny surface of the latest handsome tome on C R Mackintosh to find confusion and shake scholarly integrity 16.07.2010 An astonishing number of books have the title ‘Charles Rennie Mackintosh’. A glance at Amazon quickly shows readers’ understandable confusions between them. Can publishers really not accept more creative titles to distinguish very different volumes? As James Macaulay’s handsome and beautifully produced addition (Charles Rennie Mackintosh, WW Norton, 275 pages, hardback, £42) now tops the pile, the potential reader deserves some help in relating the meat to what it says on the tin. A first clue is offered by his 246 illustrations. Nearly a third show Mackintosh architecture. A quarter are in his hand – mostly in architectural drawings; but just 20 others cover all his huge range of flower drawings, graphic and decorative work and his paintings. Just under half of the book’s images, however, show the work of others. Many of these illustrate the Glasgow of Mackintosh’s youth, some show the Glasgow going up around him, while others illustrate non- architectural the work of those close to him during his years in Glasgow. But one soon senses a ‘little Glaswegian’ mentality developing. Mackintosh, we are told “would have been shocked” on seeing Raimondo D’Aronco fine building for the Turin 1902 exhibition. But, as it was not in Glasgow, we are not shown it nor is the architect even named. Nor are we shown anything by James MacLaren, surely an important influence on Mackintosh; not being Glaswegian this architect is never even mentioned. -

Sauchiehall Street: A Great Glasgow Thoroughfare This tour tells the story of Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow’s most famous street, and its buildings. The street has been a major residential, entertainment and shopping centre since the 19th century and stretches over 1½ miles from Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in the West End to Buchanan Galleries in the City Centre. At its heyday, at the turn of the last century, it would have teemed with trams, horse-drawn carts, bicycles, and pedestrians. The number and scale of buildings richly demonstrate Victorian Glasgow’s place as the ‘Second City’ of the British Empire. The important thing is to look up and enjoy the city’s architectural riches! ------------------------------------- 1. The tour begins at the junction of Sauchiehall Street and Argyle Street at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (J. W. Simpson and E. J. Milner Allen; 1891–1901), one of Glasgow’s most popular destinations. It was the centrepiece of Glasgow’s International Exhibition in 1901 and is sited in Kelvingrove Park (1850s). The elaborate building with its towers, buttresses, corner pavilions and cupolas is Spanish Baroque in style. Notice the richly carved decorative and figurative sculpture by George Frampton, William Birnie Rhind, and McGilvray & Ferris, among others. The building’s rich red sandstone is a distinctive feature of late Victorian Glasgow, as improved production techniques and rail links provided access to quarries beyond Glasgow, notably south-west Scotland. Kelvingrove (free admission) houses one of the UK’s finest civic art collections, including work by Mackintosh and his contemporaries. 2.
