Preview Shelf Articles for 2016 December 1, 2016 Discovering the Wild Heritage of the Nineteenth State By Dianne Combs It has been a wonderful year of celebration for the state of Indiana. Two hundred years of statehood! We have learned many things about our political and historical heritage, but I believe that Indiana still has many secrets that need to be learned. Here at the library we have some beautiful books that will help you explore the natural history of our great state. “The Natural Heritage of Indiana,” edited by Marion T. Jackson, takes us on a lively jaunt through the terrain of our great state. To my delight, the very first picture in Part One is of the “Honeycomb Rock” at Pine Hills Nature Preserve in the southwestern part of Montgomery County. Glaciation and its effects on our landscape are explained in detail, which helps me to understand all the rock formations I come across while exploring some of our nationally renowned state parks. Throughout this section, written by Henry Gray, we are taken on several tours of Indiana. He describes the terrain as if he were driving along highways and illustrates his discussion with appropriate topographical maps. Our soil and water, wetlands and caves — all these give our state its unique stamp on the map of our nation. Beautiful photographs of the flora and fauna of Indiana fill the pages of this coffee table book. I could spend hours just turning its pages, learning about the native plants and animals with which we share our land. We have recently acquired two copies of “A Place Called Turkey Run — A Celebration of Indiana’s Second State Park in Photographs and Words,” by Daniel P. -

Perry Miller and American Studies
Perry Miller and American Studies Murray G. Murphey American civilization/American studies is a well established field, and, it seems worthwhile to look back to the beginnings to see if those who launched this enterprise some seventy years ago might have something to teach us today. American studies, like most fields, has its origin myths, and there are not a few who have bid for the honor of founder. But with due respect to those honored dead, I believe the most important single figure in launching American civiliza tion was Perry Miller. That was not, I should hasten to add, any part of Miller's intention; for a variety of reasons, most of them personal, he kept his distance from the American History and Literature program at Harvard, but if one looks at who he taught and at what he did, Miller's imprint is unmistakable. That he was a great teacher needs saying only to those who never sat in his classroom. That he was a spellbinding lecturer is well known; more importantly, he could inspire, and a host of dissertations, articles and books have been written by people whose passion for their subjects was kindled by him. But Miller's great est gift to posterity was what he wrote. It was sixty-one years ago that Miller, then thirty-four years old, published the first volume of the New England Mind} The impact of that book, and of the second volume that came a war later,2 have been remarkable. Miller of course did not rediscover the Puritans; they were never lost, and scholarly writing about them is continuous through the nineteenth century. -

Hancock Thesis Committee: Joseph Stanton (Chairperson) Brandy Nalani McDougall Robert Perkinson Keywords: Pastoral, Paradise, Pacific Islands, Hawai‘i, Herman Melville, Charles Warren Stoddard, Mark Twain, Theocritus, Longus ABSTRACT: This aim of this thesis is to deconstruct the etymology of the word “paradise” within the context of early Pacific narratives by popular American authors, and then within today’s tourist propaganda. Fundamental to that process is the imagination of “Pacific Pastoralism,” in which the pastoral tradition is considered as a predecessor to American traditions of describing the landscapes and peoples of the Pacific region, as those descriptions fueled an economy forcibly mapped onto that space. Herein texts are analyzed via close-reading comparisons, historical research, and more lyrical methods such as rhetorical stargazing, echolocation, and narrative technique. While this thesis is indebted to scholars in the fields of American Studies and English literature, it attempts to open space for Pacific Island Studies to epistemologically counter its cultural materialist claims. In total, this thesis is a critique of tourist marketing, which was ferried from antiquity to the Pacific on wooden ships, and today renders beaches little more than golf course sand-traps. From Mocha Dick to Moby Dick: Fishing for Clues to Moby's Name and Color Ben Rogers University of Delaware Melville's fictional whale Moby Dick appears to derive from the real whale Mocha Dick, yet the differences in names and colors between these two suggest that Moby's name may be intimately connected to his symbolic role. One meaning of mob is 'to wrap in a cowl or veil'. Creating an adjective by adding -y produces moby 'having the qualities of being hooded, especially about the head', a definition reflected in Ishmael's "grand hooded phantom." Dick may be a shortening of Dickens, a euphemism for the devil. Dick may also suggest Dicky 'an officer acting on commission', an appropriate meaning for Ahab' s and Starbuck's conception of Moby as God or an agent of God. Lexicons available to Melville reveal the meaning of the name and illuminate the characteriza- tion of Moby as both commodity and Zeus of the sea, both "dumb brute" and divine Leviathan. The 1929 discovery of a narrative about a white whale named Mocha Dick began 70 years of speculation as to the extent of Mocha as Moby's prototype. The narrative, written by J.R. Reynolds in 1839, described a "renowned monster, who had come off victorious in a hundred fights ... [and was] white as wool." Typical of the reaction of literary critics at the time was Garnett's remark that "Moby Dick ... was but Mocha Dick in faery fiction dressed" (1929, 858). Critical editions of Moby-Dick often include the Reynold's narrative and today scholars generally agree that Melville probably knew of Mocha.1 The obvious sibling qualities of the two whales has tended to center onomastic study on the name Mocha Dick, and subsequent research has attempted to demonstrate that Melville knew of Mocha Dick or, assuming this, to explain why Mocha changed to Moby. -

About the Course “Call me Ishmael.” Even if you haven’t read Moby-Dick, you will probably know the novel’s iconic open- ing line. Likewise, even if you haven’t read Moby-Dick, you will have a rough idea as to what its story is about—Captain Ahab’s frantic hunt of a white sperm whale. The very fact that people know about Moby-Dick without knowing Moby-Dick testifies to the book’s cultural relevance and power. Indeed, as we will see, Moby-Dick is about so much more than the mere conflict between man and nature. This undergraduate seminar will consist of two main parts: In the first half of the semester, we will engage in a close reading of what many literary scholars and also the general public consider one of the (if not the) “great American novels.” In the second half of the semester, we will look at the presence of Moby-Dick in popular culture. Accordingly, we will watch movie adaptations, read comic adaptations, listen to music adaptations, but also explore some other texts in which Moby-Dick (and/or Moby Dick) plays a dominant role. Since the first part of this undergraduate seminar will pursue a close reading of Moby-Dick, the main objective here will be that students gain a deeper understanding of Moby-Dick and its socio- economic environment; in particular, students will come to understand (and appreciate) what might be termed Moby-Dick’s postmodernism avant la lettre, its rhetorical strategies, its ecological subtexts, its engagement with scientific discourse, and nineteenth-century whale-hunting. -

ABSTRACT POWELL, ETHEL ANNE. Ghosts of Chances for Redemption via Abjection in Wilson Harris’s Palace of the Peacock and Others. (Under the direction of Deborah Wyrick.) This thesis explores, in three works of literature, possibilities for redemption via abjection. Julia Kristeva’s semanalysis is the primary theoretical tool with which Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko (1688) is examined as a nascent work in Caribbean literature. Next, and central to this thesis, the Guyanese Wilson Harris’s The Palace of the Peacock (1960) is discussed within Kristevan context and within Caribbeanist literary critical context. Mariella, a central and fluid character in Palace, acts as a semiotic agent of destruction and of abjectly sublime redemption for Donne and his crew of river boatmen in pursuit of Other ethnically mixed peoples in Guyana’s interior. Donne’s moment of epiphany, wherein he comes to understand how inhumanely he has treated Others, is followed by his “second” death and rebirth in a celestial palace (along with the rest of the crew), marking his and their transformation from abject slavers to abjectly sublime and redeemed beings. The semiotic linguistic characteristics of Palace are investigated: while written in the style of Magical Realism, Palace contains lexical and dialectal features stemming from African and Amerindian influences. Flannery O’Connor’s “Revelation” (1965) is the final work examined. Via legacies of plantation slavery and ensuing discrimination against freed African-Americans, many works of Southern U.S. literature contain qualities of postcolonial literatures, particularly the element of abject Otherness. In “Revelation” Mrs. Ruby Turpin’s ideas about abject Others are transformed, as she is transformed from an abject avatar of white Southern racism and classism, into an abjectly sublime person who receives a “revelation” of her wrongs righted in a celestial march of all human beings.
