DOCUMENT RESUME ED 103 890 CS 201 950 AUTHOR McMahon, Helen TITLF A Rhetoric of American Popular Drama: TheComedies of Neil Simon. PUB DATM Mar 75 NOTE 18p.; Paper presented at the National Convention of the Popular Culture Association (5th, St. Louis, March 20-22, 1975) EDRS PRICE MF-$0.76HC-$1.58 PLUS POSTAGE DESCRIPTORS Analytical Criticism; *Characterization (Literature); Comedy; *Content Analysis; *Drama; *Literary Criticism; *Playwriting; Stereotypes IDENTIFIERS *Simon (Neil) ABSTRACT This paper discusses generally Neil Simon's plays; specifically examines "God's Favorite," "Plaza Suite," "Barefootin The Park," "Star Spangled Girl," "Come Blow Your Horn,"and "Last of the Red Hot Lovers"; and quotes reviews of the plays. Anexamination of the composition of the plays reveals that they all more orless share certin topics and plot structure, have a veneerof topicality, and are supported by gags, jokes, and absurd behavior.Variations on the themes of unobtainable vain fantasies are played out;the plays all end in the marriage bed, however devious anddeceitful the way has been. The vagaries of sex and guilt, inadequacy andmachismo are all circumscribed and made manageable. It isconcluded that Simon's plays are telhnically unsatisfying because he uses adisjointed tragicomic story line with an enormous number of realistic andcliche details and gags to distract from the disjointed story. His exploitation of the familiar prevents explorationof the serious or the comic. And, for the same reasons, the plays arethematically unsatisfying as well. (T3) U S DEPARTMEWTOF HEALTH. • The Goodbye Girl Provided D Richard Dreyfuss His Only Oscar and Prov Es That Neil Simon Really Was, for a Time, America ' S Best Playwright
A N I L L U M I N E D I L L U S I O N S E S S A Y B Y I A N C . B L O O M TT HH EE GG OO OO DD BB YY EE GG II RR LL Directed by Herbert Ross Produced by Ray Stark Distributed by Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer Released in 1977 on ' t forget about this movie. A true confection of comedy, The Goodbye Girl provided D Richard Dreyfuss his only Oscar and prov es that Neil Simon really was, for a time, America ' s best playwright. A New York single mom, when ditched by a selfish actor, must acquiesce in the presence of a sub - lessee of said selfish actor. The mom is a burnt - out musical dancer, the daughter a pr odigious conversationalist, the sub - lessee a Chicago actor making his Off - Off Broadway debut as Richard III...with a twist. Neil Simon combines romance with his Odd Couple formula of strange bedfellows. It ' s a brilliant idea because opposites do attract (or at least men and women who fight are often attracted to each other). Moreover, The Odd Couple wears out its welcome through over - repetition, but here the romantic element takes over just as we ' ve had enough of their sparring. And since the setup is t hat the mom has been ditched by two previous actors, she ' s wary of this one and isn ' t sure she can be that trusting again. In most love stories the tension is gone once the leads have sex, but here there ' s still no resolution because the movie was never about whether they would get together, but whether they would stay together.

One of the most striking features of today’s television landscape in the United States is without a doubt the more open treatment and greatly increased visibility of a broad spectrum of LGBT characters and issues on primetime network and cable programming, a phenomenon that has risen in crescendo in recent years and has thus mirrored the American public’s growing acceptance of LGBT lifestyles and hot-button issues such as marriage equality or same-sex adoption.
