CASE HISTORY Ref: UK / CH / BR — Rev: 00, Oct 2016 , BASAL REINFORCEMENT OVER SOFT SOIL Product: Paralink

Problem The project comprises of a north-south transport link that provides a new bridge over the River Mersey in Cheshire, that will relieve the of much of the traffic that presently causes congestion. The new route will provide approximately 9.5 km of new and improved highways and calls for significant reconfiguration of the existing highway network at Ditton, Loops, Bridgewater, Halton Lea, Lodge Lane, Weston Point and M56 Junction 12 (general map). The Mersey Gateway Bridge will permit the Silver Jubilee Bridge to be reconfigured and restored to its function as a ‘local bridge’.The bridge will be 2.3 km long, passing over the River Mersey (1km wide approx.). The main deck will be made from reinforced concrete, while steel cables, departing from 80-125 meters pylons, will support the structure. The Mersey Gateway Project is a public-private partnership for the design, build, finance, operation and maintenance of a new tolled bridge over the River Mersey in the northwest of England, and includes significant redesign and reconfiguration of the approach highway network. The project includes the reconfiguration of the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge and its approach roads. The Merseylink Civil Contractors Joint Venture (MCCJV) involves Kier Construction, Infrastructure and Overseas, Samsung C&T and FCC who have been appointed as Principal Contractor. Halton Borough Council entered into a Public Private Partnership with the Merseylink Consortium in 2014 with the £1.86 billion cost of the initial scheme and its subsequent maintenance and operation to be funded mainly The route of the Mersey Gateway by toll revenues taken up until 2044. Solution The whole infrastructure is one of the largest ones currently going on in the UK, and is one of the government’s top-40 priority projects. This is why Maccaferri is proud to be a key provider of top products in order to make this crucial infrastructure safer, reliable and long-lasting. Paralink geogrid was chosen throughout for the northern bridge approaching ramp and road network (e.g. Ditton

Juction, Widnes Loops). Paralink is acting as basal reinforcement underneath the created embankments over the existing soft soil. Maccaferri worked closely with JV designers – Aecom – to define the Paralink grades required in the design following the BS 8006:2010 code.
