MD 27 W Jefferson Street, Rockville, MD 20850 Dear Regular Attendees of the Bar Luncheon: As you may have heard, at my suggestion, the Executive Com- mittee of the Montgomery County Bar Association recently took up the issue of whether we could continue to sponsor seven (7) bar lunches next year. The reason for my request was that for the fifth straight year, our Association’s member- ship has declined, and in particular, we are not getting the new practitioners to join the Association. In order to maintain rel- evance with our newer members and our mid-range members, who now have less time for commitments outside of work and their young children, particularly in the middle of the work day, we need to sponsor more and different events. Ideas being Please join us considered by the Bar Association are, a trivia contest night, a family day on a weekend with food trucks and games, a take to celebrate the your child to work event at the courthouse and continuing the Fall and Spring Happy Hours. Unfortunately, none of these RETIREMENT events can occur without funding and there is no extra money in the Association’s budget with a decreasing membership roll. Hence, we needed to look to the bar lunch; an event that costs of our membership $18,000 a year, approximately $2,600 a lunch, at which on average 70-75 members attend. The Honorable Terrence J. McGann Please know that the meaningfulness of the lunch to those of you who attend regularly was heard by me and the and Board, which strongly influenced our decision to reduce, not eliminate the bar lunch. I, and I know the rest of the Board, Special Deputy Patrick J. McGann want to do the job we were elected to do which is to represent all the members of the Bar Association. In that vein, I would greatly appreciate your understanding of our need to ask you to share what you hold dear about our Bar Association with Thursday, June 27, 2019; 5:00 pm other members who will better benefit from attendance at Our Lady of Lourdes School other types of Bar Association sponsored events. 7500 Pearl Street I look forward to seeing you at the first bar lunch of the 2019- 2020 year. I have some great ideas for speakers and I know Bethesda, Maryland 20814 we can still make this a lunch you look forward to even, if we meet slightly less frequently. Often they are burned out (or close to it), depressed, anxious, bored. Feeling “stuck” and often overwhelmed by the quantity of the work expected. His presentation will provide tangible strategies which succeed in re-igniting the passion and purpose these lawyers once possessed. Rather than surrender to these feelings of hopelessness, lawyers can rebound with resiliency to become better than ever---utilizing the concrete solutions which are the core of this presentation. 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Taxation Law Demystifying IRS Letters While Resolving IRS Liens and Liens Speakers: John Pontius, Esquire of Pontius Tax Law and Michael Goldberg, Esquire of Stein Sperling When a taxpayer has unpaid tax debt to the IRS and/or the Maryland Comptroller, the law requires enforcement collection action against the taxpayer. The most common collection actions are tax liens and levies. A tax lien protects the government’s interest in all of a taxpayer’s property, including real estate, personal property and financial assets. A tax levy is legal seizure of a taxpayer’s property to satisfy a tax debt. Join John Pontius and Michael Goldberg for a review of common IRS letters sent to delinquent taxpayers. Mr. Pontius and Mr. Goldberg will advise on how to discharge property from a tax lien, subordinate a tax lien on real property as well as withdraw a tax lien. They will also discuss advanced tactics for levy collection alternatives such as installment agreements, offers in compromise and currently not collectible status. This discussion is designed for both tax and non-tax attorneys.
