BIRMINGHAM SPEEDWAY `The Club That Listens To Its Fans` FANS QUESTIONNAIRE As a current, or lapse fan, Birmingham Speedway values the views of our fans. With the club now once again restored to sound management and financial structures, and the team achieving great success, we wanted to consult our fans as we move forward in our planning. We would urge as many fans as possible, including lapsed fans, to take a few minutes to kindly fill-in this `Fans Questionnaire` as we plan ahead for the next exciting chapter in the history of the club. Please answer all questions by placing a `tick` next to your answers. Where applicable, please tick just one answer. 1. How often do you attend Perry Barr Stadium for Speedway? Don Gray, Old Orchard, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, CB5 9JU, Telephone: 01223 862279 has posed the question above and set out to answer it in the following article. On becoming aware that I saw my first speedway meeting on Easter Monday 1930, many acquaintances ask, who, in my opinion, was the best rider in the pre-war era? A most difficult question to answer. A number of criteria present themselves from which to reach an opinion and they are viewed from different perspectives by various enthusiasts, many of whom, I might suggest, are biased towards their own particular favourites. I must concentrate on the thirties and ignore the overseas pioneers of the late 1920s when Frank Arthur and Vic Huxley reigned supreme over the inexperienced emergent British riders and when those spectacular showmen like Billy Lamont and Sprouts Elder enthralled a curious and excited public. I choose to ignore the one track specialists who performed brilliantly on their own circuits but indifferently when visiting other tracks. I put men like Jack Barnett and Phil Bishop at High Beech, the Australian Jack Bishop at Exeter, Arthur Jervis at Leicester Super and Len Parker at Bristol. Unlike the modern era, the pre-war decade was notable for the number of riders who experienced purple patches of form and dominated their peer for a few weeks, only to recede back to the category of “good” rather than “outstanding”.

Part 6: SIX AFRICAN TRACKS IN 1953/54 FOUR IN THE UNION – TWO IN RHODESIA IN spite of the wettest summer for a decade – there were many washouts – speedway increased in popularity in the Union. As weeks rolled by more and more cities clamoured for tracks, suitable venues being the only obstacle to a wild-fire spread of the sport. Supporters clubs, on British lines, grew apace and hero worship reached an all-time high. The knights of the cinder circuits were quite as well known in the Transvaal as the players of any of the other major spectator sports. In fact in the mid-1950‘s only inter-provincial and international rugby had a larger and more ardent following than speedway racing. Club rugby, soccer and cricket had been relegated to the ranks of the "also-rans“ where numbers are concerned. An event which was to have a profound effect on Transvaal racing was the arrival of restless, ambitious Trevor Redmond in September. He went to work with a will and carved a track out of the virgin veldt at Springs on the Far East Rand. Meetings went with a swing. Red-hot racing, unexpected novelty turns plus managerial drive brought the customers in and by mid-season Redmond had hit the jackpot. Bob Quick, once a star rider, staged a come-back, this time as a promoter, and his snappy little stadium at Randfontein proved highly popular on the West Rand. Rain – and how it came down on Friday nights – was the spoil-sport at Wembley, Johannesburg. *** Main domestic competition was the National League won by Springs Stars from Wembley Lions.
