Originally Fnamed Texas Technological College, Texas Tech opened in 1925 with six buildings, four schools (Agriculture, Engineering, Home Economics, and Liberal Arts), and an enrollment of 914. Texas Tech grew rapidly after World War II, and in 1969 the Texas legislature approved a name change to Texas Tech University. In the years since, Texas Tech has grown to become the larg- est comprehensive higher education institution in the western two-thirds of the state. As the only campus in Texas that is home to a major university, law school, and medical school, the university is the major institution of higher edu- cation in a region larger than 46 of the nation’s 50 states. Today, Texas Tech continues to thrive, with more than 40,000 students enrolled in its 11 col- leges: Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resourc- es, Architecture, Arts & Sciences, Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration, Education, Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. College of Engineer- ing, Honors College, Human Sciences, Media & Communication, J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts, and the Graduate School, as well as University Programs via the Provost’s Office. Because of its educational scope and purpose, as well as the size of the region it serves, Texas Tech University operates in numerous Texas lo- cations beyond the Lubbock campus. In all, the Texas Tech University System—which includes Texas Tech University, Angelo State University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Cen- ter at El Paso—has more than 44,000 students enrolled. 4 TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY MAY 20202021 5 6 TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY INCE TEXAS TECH’S FIRST graduation ceremony in the spring of 1927, more than 200,000 undergraduate and graduate degrees have been awarded by the university. From these proud graduates Shave emerged captains of industry, world-re- nowned surgeons, noted authors, famous singers, acclaimed teachers and professors, attorneys, en- trepreneurs, agronomists, scientists, professional athletes, and countless others who have claimed positions of service and responsibility in a rapidly changing world. Texas Tech University graduates have governed states, flown in space, served as Presidential cabi- net members, won Olympic gold medals, served as ambassadors to foreign countries, acted on Broadway stages, won Pulitzer Prizes, served in Congress, led Fortune 500 companies, and been watched by millions on network television news. All Texas Tech graduates can point with pride to the solid academic preparation they received and the personal connections they made as Red Raid- ers. For beneath the spacious skies of West Texas and in the halls of brick and tile through which they strolled during their time on campus, gener- ations of Texas Tech students have been provided a foundation for success that is without parallel. As they take their first steps into careers that will see many of them literally change the world, they can remember with certainty one important fact about Texas Tech University: From here, it’s possible.     ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 School of Sciences and Mathematics Annual Report 2014‐2015 Executive Summary The 2014 – 2015 academic year was a very successful one for the School of Sciences and Mathematics (SSM). Our faculty continued their stellar record of publication and securing extramural funding, and we were able to significantly advance several capital projects. In addition, the number of majors in SSM remained very high and we continued to provide research experiences for a significant number of our students. We welcomed four new faculty members to our ranks. These individuals and their colleagues published 187 papers in peer‐reviewed scientific journals, many with undergraduate co‐authors. Faculty also secured $6.4M in new extramural grant awards to go with the $24.8M of continuing awards. During the 2013‐14 AY, ground was broken for two 3,000 sq. ft. field stations at Dixie Plantation, with construction slated for completion in Fall 2014. These stations were ultimately competed in June 2015, and will begin to serve students for the Fall 2015 semester. The 2014‐2015 academic year, marked the first year of residence of Computer Science faculty, as well as some Biology and Physics faculty, in Harbor Walk. In addition, nine Biology faculty had offices and/or research space at SCRA, and some biology instruction occurred at MUSC. In general, the displacement of a large number of students to Harbor Walk went very smoothly. Temporary astronomy viewing space was secured on the roof of one of the College’s garages. The SSM dean’s office expended tremendous effort this year to secure a contract for completion of the Rita Hollings Science Center renovation, with no success to date.

    TWENTY-EIGHT YEAR OLD BUCK FORD IS A SINGING AND RECORDING COUNTRY MUSIC SENSATION!!!! Nashville recording artist Buck Ford is a young, pure country singing sensation that focuses on keeping the traditional country sound and rhythm flowing. Bucks influences consist of George Strait, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Keith Whiteley, just to name a few. Buck and his band pride themselves on the fact that their performances “bring back to life” the sound and feel of real old country music. Biography Buck began his story as a professional motocross racer, riding the circuit for over a decade. He received a full ride endorsement with a Honda team through the West Coast Super Cross Series in 2009. He placed his riding career on hold to pursue his love and passion for country music. Despite his dedication and talent in the professional motocross scene, his heart has always been in country music. His performances include his own written and composed music and covers songs from greats such as the likes of George Strait, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Keith Whitley, Craig Morgan, Wade Hayes, Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Lawrence, Chris Young, Billy Currington, Hank Jr., Brooks and Dunn, Alan Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Garth Brooks and many more. Buck has been successfully playing for over 7 years, and played with other fine musicians, such as The Time Jumpers, Vince Gill, Dawn Sears, Wade Hayes, James Mitchell, Mike Johnson, Brent Mason, Paul Franklin, Kevin Grant, Lonnie Wilson, Larry Franklin, and many other talented musicians throughout the West Coast, South West and Nashville regions. Buck has performed at fairs, festivals, rodeos, clubs, many private events, weddings, and parties.

    BIOGRAPHY One of Sweden’s most powerful adult contemporary vocalists, ELINDA is a pop and soul artist who has performed on stages around Europe, the U.S. and Asia and is making her long-awaited U.S. live debut in October 2018. Known for her faithful covers of songs by ABBA and her demo vocals for Celine Dion, ELINDA’s sound is an explosion of positivity in music – pure joy and glowing with an exuberance that’s infectious. ELINDA is Linda Östergren Frithiof, a multi-talented stage performer and recording artist who comes from the small island of Ekerö, west of Stockholm, and began her career as a trained dancer graduating from the Lasse Kühler Dansskola School and the Ballet Academy, one of Scandinavia’s leading dance schools. Quickly recognized as a commanding singer as well as accomplished dancer, she performed at nightclubs and cabaret venues, and traveled widely to sing and dance at vacation resorts, on cruise ships and at corporate events. ELINDA has performed for a televised audience of more than 100 million andfor the Swedish Armed Forces Entertainers, a hotbed of the country’s best music talents entertaining Swedish troops at home and abroad, including in Afghanistan. She performed as a backup singer for major Scandinavian stars Magnus Uggla, Markoolio E-Type, Shirley Clamp, Martin Stenmarck and Charlotte Perrelli and American Lutricia McNeal, and sang vocal demos for Celine Dion. Guess what? We have just celebrated our 18th anniversary. Those who try things we recommend are rewarded. We have stayed in business for one reason and that is we have never attempted to appeal to the lowest common denominator as mainstream outlets do. At the same time we recognise that people do have different tastes and to some CMT is actually good. We also appeal to those people and offer many mainstream items in our bargain bin. But the legends and true country music are our bread butter and will always be. If you see something you think you may like but are worried let us know. If you pass our inquisition we may be able to send it on a sale or return basis. I say inquisition because if your favourite artists are SheDaisy and Rascal Flatts we certainly aren’t going to risk something as precious as Justin Trevino. By the same token we believe great music is timeless and knows no bounds. People may think chuck steak is good until they try the best rump! Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Dale Watson. Before hand I had the added pleasure of sitting in with my compatriot Eddie White (a.k.a. “The Cosmic Cowboy”) for an interview at the 2RRR Studios. Dale is a humble, engaging and extremely likeable man with a passion for tradition.

En dépit de l’absence de consensus autour de sa définition, la biopiraterie est néanmoins présentée comme un acte d’appropriation des ressources génétiques et/ou des savoirs traditionnels des communautés autochtones et locales par les firmes biotechnologiques. Situées en majorité dans les pays en développement riches en biodiversité, ces communautés sont désignées comme les acteurs de la conservation de la biodiversité mondiale depuis des générations.

KEY IDEAS • Energy isn’t stuff. • Energy looks different in different situations – it can be transferred from one object to another. • The temperature of an object can be raised by doing work on it (e.g. friction). • Temperature is related to the movement (kinetic energy) of the particles in a substance. ACSHE226 Science knowledge can develop through collaboration across the disciplines of science and the contributions of people from a range of cultures. Lesson outcomes At the end of this activity students will be able to: • describe how Count Rumford’s observations provided evidence against the caloric theory of heat. What ideas might your students already have? • Students will have a general understanding that heat flows from hot objects to cold. This will be covered in Activity 3.3. The common use of the word flow is unfortunate, as it suggests a fluid. Key vocabulary Heat Teacher content information It is not the most desirable approach to introduce weapons of war as teaching tools, but this particular experiment was a fundamental and famous one, which transformed our understanding of heat and energy. Cannons originated in ancient China along with the gun powder required to fire them. They were important in warfare for many centuries and modern artillery guns are simply a later modification. Only recently have powered missiles replaced modern artillery. Cannons were traditionally made by casting in solid metal, usually bronze or iron.

Thompson, who is said to have bootlegged physics courses at Harvard when still a poor boy, became one of the discoverers of the Law of Conservation of Energy, and left the endowment for the Rumford Professorship in 1814.
