Articles & Testimony The iconic youths of Egypt's Tahrir Square revolution are now deeply divided among nearly a dozen, often indistinguishable political parties, while the Muslim Brotherhood is seizing the momentum. he protesters who led Egypt's revolt last January were young, liberal, and linked-in. They were the bloggers T who first proposed the demonstrations against Hosni Mubarak on Twitter; the Facebook-based activists who invited their "friends" to protest; and Wael Ghonim, the 30-year-old Google executive who, after Egypt's state security agency detained him for 12 days, rallied the crowds to hold Tahrir Square. Far from emulating Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, they channeled Thomas Paine, calling for civil liberties, religious equality, and an end to Mubarak's dictatorship. Their determination, punctuated by the speed of their triumph, fueled optimism that the long-awaited Arab Spring had finally sprung -- that the Middle East would no longer be an autocratic exception in an increasingly democratic world. The political transition following their revolt, however, has dulled this optimism. The iconic youths of Tahrir Square are now deeply divided among nearly a dozen, often indistinguishable political parties, almost all of which are either too new to be known or too discredited by their cooperation with the previous regime. Concentrated within the small percentage of Internet-using, politically literate Egyptians, their numbers are surprisingly small. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT This thesis explores a particular experiment in political accommodation between the Muslim majority and Coptic minority in Egypt between 1918 and 1952. The Egyptians then seized the opportunity presented by a changing political system to restructure the governing arrangements between Muslims and Copts and involve the latter more fully in the political process. Many hoped to see the collaboration of the 1919 revolution spur the creation of both a new collective Egyptian identity and a state without religious bias. Traditional ways of governing, however, were not so easily cast aside, and Islam continued to have a political role. -

Global Intersections: A History of Women’s Liberation in Egypt by Jordan Earls An undergraduate honors thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in University Honors and Social Science Thesis Adviser Taghrid Khuri Portland State University 2017 1 Introduction The struggle of women against constraints placed upon them because of gender is one historically shared worldwide and continues today. In 1989, Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term “intersectional feminism” to describe how intersections of oppression impact women to varying degrees and argued that the goal of feminism must be to challenge these intersections. To not challenge these intersections is to, instead, reproduce them. Crenshaw demonstrates that the failure of American feminism to adequately interrogate the problems of racism caused feminism in the US to replicate and reinforce the racism women of color faced. Likewise, civil rights movements to end racism largely ignored the oppression of women by patriarchy and, in so doing, reproduced the subordination of women. -

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, women began to raise their voices to argue for their rights as well as raise awareness to their roles in society. In the first decades of the twentieth century, Hoda Sha‘rawi and Malak Hifni Nasif were strong advocates for women’s emancipation. Scholars have noted that both were feminists who worked towards the same goals but represented two different trends, or had two different approaches in expressing their feminist agendas. Sha‘rawi adopted a western oriented approach which was guided by the western model of women’s emancipation, while Nasif adopted an Islamic oriented approach which called for women’s rights from within an Islamic framework. -

Journal of Association of Arab Universities for Tourism and Hospitality Volume 12 - Dec 2015 - No 2 - Pages: (51 : 78) King Farouk and the Wafd’s Relations with the United States After the 1952 Revolution (1952-1957) Noha Osman Azmy Associate Professor, Tourism Guidance Department, Faculty of Tourism and Hotels, Sadat City University Abstract: King Farouk was deposed and forced to leave Egypt after the 1952 Revolution. Under the demand of the political purification, the Wafd party was dissolved and its leaders were imprisoned or kept under house arrest. The year 1955 marked the first contact between the Farouk and Wafd with the United States. The tense relation between US and Nasser that year gave hope for both to return to power with US support. The study depended on the US State Department documents to represent these connections and to show the American opinion with it. Unlike the previous studies, the study approved that the first contact of Farouk to the US was in 1955 not in 1956; in which he commented on the Middle East situation, the US’s role in depositing him and described the new regime in Egypt. The Wafd also tried to gain the US support to return to power through two different approaches. One was ready to deal with Nasser but with parliamentary life depending on the Wafd’s popularity; the second was to depose Nasser and replace him with Naguib with the return of the Wafd party to the political scene. The study concluded that these connections reflected the deep ideological difference between Farouk and Wafd and showed that the US’s foreign policy was determined by its interest which was not anymore with either the Wafd or Farouk. -

Political parties are regulated by law. Using the concept of political memory, the article traces some of the major debates within the women’s movement throughout this era. By focusing on the ways in which these women conceptualize the geopolitical, I show that the twin concepts of imperialism and capitalism were central to the ways in which they understood gender. -

chapter 3 Nation-Building and Childhood in Early Twentieth Century Egypt1 Heidi Morrison Introduction In her autobiography, the Egyptian activist and writer Latifa Zayyat (1923–1996) recalls standing on the balcony of her home at 11 years of age and seeing the police shoot down 24 demonstrators. This was in 1934, when the Prime Minister, who served the King and the British Occupation, shut down all trains so that the leader of the majority Wafq party would not be able to tour the provinces. A procession of cars and thousands of people swarmed the streets. The municipality of the province ordered the digging of a series of trenches to prevent the demonstration from advancing. As Zayyat stood on the balcony, she counted the fallen bodies, observing guts exploding and deep red blood flowing like a waterfall. She noted one man raped by the policemen, while hearing her mother in the house cry.2 Writing many years later, Zayyat reflects on how she felt as a child watching the demonstration: I find no refuge from the sense of powerlessness, of distress, or oppres- sion that shakes me as the police shoot down twenty-four demonstrators that day, as I scream at my inability to do anything, to go down into the street and stop the bullets flying from the black guns.3 Although Zayyat saw herself as a helpless child in this moment of intense his- toric change, her life, and that of peers, was in reality at the heart of the Egyptian nationalist movement at the turn of the twentieth century. -

A few critics, Nawar al-Hassan Golley, is an example, clarify that Arab Muslim women are not weak and passive as they are seen by the Western Feminism viewed through the lens of their own culture and historical background. Using Transnational Feminist theory, my study examines four autobiographies: Harem Years By Huda Sha’arawi, A Mountainous Journey a Poet’s Autobiography by Fadwa Tuqan, A Daughter of Isis by Nawal El Saadawi, and Dreams of Trespass, Tales of a Harem Girlhood by Fatima Mernissi. This study promises to add to the extant literature that examine Arab Muslim women’s status by viewing Arab women’s autobiographies as real life stories to introduce examples of Arab Muslim women figures who have effected positive and significant changes for themselves and their societies. Moreover, this study seeks to demonstrate, through the study of select Arab Muslim women’s autobiographies, that Arab Muslim women are educated, have feminist consciousnesses, and national figures with their own clear reading of their own religion and culture, more telling than that of the reading of outsiders.
