When the adverse rul­ ing was made public, a number of news· papers-including the N.Y. "Times"- ran editorials critical of the State Depart­ ment's position. The question of whether the State Department has, or should have, the right to restrict foreign travel by Ameri­ can citizens is a political one, not to be argued here. It seems clear, however, that the State Department ruling was quite senSible-indeed, unavoidable-if one grants that they do have a r ight to restrict such travel. Fischer would have gone to Havana with a prize in mind_ but it wouldn't have been the Pulitzer Prize. Like any sensible person, Bobby would rather be Superman than Clark Kent. At any rate, Fischer accepted the State Department ruling without protest and there was never any question oC his going to Cuba on his own. Instead, ar­ J . F.     Junior Four Nations League - a report by Mike Truran This season’s competition was bigger and better than ever, with teams of all ages competing over three weekends in two separate divisions. Like its senior equivalent, the Junior Four Nations Chess League (J4NCL) has the advantage of taking place in excellent qual- ity playing conditions in premier hotels across the UK. This season’s competition took place at Barcelo UK’s flagship Hinckley Island Hotel, so parents could also have a relaxing week- end away at a top four-star hotel while their children locked horns over the chess board. And with bedrooms and meals at the usual discounted 4NCL rates it meant that a family weekend away wasn’t going to break the bank either. 1 As well as the high quality playing conditions, the J4NCL and winning team members being presented with medals differentiates itself from most other junior events in and a trophy. Stephen Wright HERE AND THERE Fischer-Taimanov Thematic Match (May 28) Last year a thematic Scheveningen event was held to commemorate the forty-fifth anniversary of the Fischer-Taimanov Candidates’ match in Vancouver. This year the event was repeated with two teams of five players each, representing youth (Fischer) and experience (Taimanov). The original SUB location is undergoing renovations, so the match took place in the Henry Angus Building, courtesy of Lee Wang of the UBC Chess Club. Other details of the match were similar to last year, and we direct you to the report in Bulletin #320. The Fischer team were again the overall winners, while the best individual scorers for each team were Grigoriy Morozov (Fischer) and Dan Scoones (Taimanov). Robert North, who as a fourteen-year-old attended the original match in 1971, shared some of his memories of the occasion, and the transcription of an interview with Mark Taimanov recorded on the eve of last year’s event was read out. This interview, along with photos and video of this year’s match and talks may be found online. Many thanks to Konstantin Pyryaev, who organized the entire event and uploaded the digital materials; watch for the third edition around this time in 2018.
