Our first project was a six month inter-community musicians’ showcase which included three months performing across nine states in America. • Over the years we have created and delivered many diversity programmes for schools and communities using the arts including... Learn About Us – a six month community relations programme for primary schools Changing Lifestyles – An intergenerational project exploring the history of the Ards Peninsula Musical Frontiersmen – Songs and stories of Emigration to North America • Thirteen years ago we created the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival & Conference to celebrate the art of song writing and since then we have been successfully organising concerts, showcases and music industry meetings in both cities. “One of the highlights promises to be the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival, which is one of the best showcases for established and emerging talent in Northern Ireland” Belfast Telegraph Editorial “As a performer, some moments stand out amongst the others, gems that remain untarnished in any musician’s career. Those moments that will never be repeated, don't need to be bettered, and will last a lifetime. The Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival delivered this with every gig. The value of this experience as a writer is immeasurable” Stephen Macartney, Local songwriter, part of the Panarts showcase in Nashville A Panarts Event Clayton Hotel, Ormeau Ave Belfast 3 5 Days 30 Concerts 100 Songwriters Becoming a teenager is quite a milestone and this year, BelNash is thirteen years old! 2017 is also a landmark as Panarts celebrates 25 years of exploring diversity through the arts and organising international cultural exchanges. It all began in 1992 with an inter-community project with sixteen unemployed musicians. After three months training in Belfast, we toured for a further three months, across nine States in America, driving from Miami Florida to New York. In BelNash 2017, we’re celebrating the art of song writing, and the cultural links between Belfast and Nashville. This year is going to be very special with award winning artists and twenty five students and staff coming to our festival from Belmont University Nashville. Welcome to Belfast and we know you’re going to enjoy linking with the Panarts Young Songwriter of the Year finalists and the Forestside & Panarts Youth Project. Many local songwriters will benefit from our ‘In The Round’ concerts, changing their musical CV overnight. Each year, local artists make new connections through BelNash and friendships formed often last for years. Special thanks to Panarts Trustees and Volunteers, who help to make it all happen. To Nick Martin for his work on the website, Sean Harty & Paul Digby for design, Les Hume & the Dawsons team. To our Principal Sponsor, The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Downtown Radio and to all our sponsors for their support. To Panarts Patrons, Paul Brady and Gallagher & Lyle and especially to the many songwriters who perform. Colin Magee, Panarts Director & Anne Coulter Festival Manager This year, we’re dedicating our festival to the memory of our good friend in music Bap Kennedy, who died in November 2016. Bap performed in several BelNash festivals, including our very first one in 2005. We’ll continue to remember him through his wonderful songs and our thoughts are with Brenda & family. Texas songwriters such as Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Nanci Griffith have written songs on their own terms rather than shape their art to fit the demands of Nashville, New York, or Los Angeles. Outside the mainstream of country or popular music, this unique community of artists is a wellspring of originality and creativity. This course allows you not only to study that group, but also to join it as songwriters yourselves. The course will follow two primary tracks. The first will involve analysis and study of songs by Texas songwriters. The second track will work like a creative writing workshop with students writing songs and critiquing each other's songs. The objectives of the class are to • analyze and do close readings of songs; • find and use credible sources for academic research; • learn the tools that songwriters use to craft songs; and • write and revise two original songs. The pair began working together as a team in 1975 and they quickly became Jamaica’s leading, and most distinctive, rhythm section. They have played on numerous releases, including recordings by U- Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Culture and Black Uhuru, while Dunbar also made several solo albums, all of which featured Shakespeare. They have constantly sought to push back the boundaries surrounding the music with their consistently inventive work. Dunbar, nicknamed ‘Sly’ in honour of his fondness for Sly And The Family Stone, was an established figure in Skin Flesh And Bones when he met Shakespeare. Dunbar drummed his first session for Lee Perry as one of the Upsetters; the resulting ‘Night Doctor’ was a big hit both in Jamaica and the UK. He next moved to Skin Flesh And Bones, whose variations on the reggae-meets-disco/soul sound brought them a great deal of session work and a residency at Kingston’s Tit For Tat club. Sly was still searching for more, however, and he moved on to another session group in the mid-70s, the Revolutionaries. This move changed the course of reggae music through the group’s work at Joseph ‘Joe Joe’ Hookim’s Channel One Studio and their pioneering rockers sound.

Celebrating Years of Music A Serenade to Music “We are the music-makers And we are the dreamers of dreams…” (Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy, Ode) The story of BBC Northern Ireland’s involvement in nurturing and broadcasting local musical talent is still in the making. This exhibition provides a revealing glimpse of work in progress at the BBC’s Community Archive in documenting the programmes and personalities who have brought music in all its different forms to life, and looks at how today’s broadcasters are responding to the musical styles and opportunities of a new century. It celebrates BBC NI’s role in supporting musical diversity and creative excellence and reflects changes in fashion, technology and society across 80 years of local broadcasting. “ Let us celebrate the way we were and the way we live now. Much has been achieved since 2BE’s first faltering (and scarcely heard) musical broadcast in 1924. popular music A Troubles Archive Essay Stuart Bailie Cover Image: Victor Sloan - Market Street, Derry From the collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland About the Author Stuart Bailie was on the staff of the NME (New Musical Express) from 1988 to 1996, rising to Assistant Editor in his last three years there. Since then, he has worked as a freelance journalist for Mojo, Uncut, Q, The Times, The Sunday Times and Hot Press. He has written sleevenotes for U2 and wrote the authorised story of Thin Lizzy, The Ballad Of The Thin Man in 1997. He has been presenting a BBC Radio Ulster show each Friday evening since 1999. He has been Associate Producer of several BBC TV music programmes, including the story of Ulster rock and pop: ‘So Hard To Beat’ in 2007. He has also been the scriptwriter / researcher for a series of BBC Radio 2 documentaries on U2, Thin Lizzy and Elvis Costello. Stuart is now CEO of Oh Yeah, a dedicated music centre in Belfast. Popular Music In September 1968 Van Morrison was in NewYork, recording a series of songs about life back in Belfast. This was his Astral Weeks album, one of his most important works. It was also a vivid snapshot of Northern Ireland just before the climate changed dramatically with the outbreak of the Troubles. In Morrison’s sentimental picture, there were youthful voices, parties and high-spirits; flamboyant figures such as Madame George cruised the streets of Belfast as the post-war generation challenged social conventions. The hippy ideals were already receding in America, but Belfast had experienced a belated Summer of Love and a blossoming social life.
