Always a hypnotic sound. the Doors's use Whenyoumake of repetitive melody is still just as fascinating. This driving repetition is evident on In the Eve of the Sun and Hang onto Your Life. The album also contains a country-and-western flavored number, Down on the Farm, and a the numberone hard rocker. Tightrope Ride. The ballad Ships with Sails is the perfect pop song. A faultless combination of perceptive lyric and sensuous melody, the song erupts into a series of brilliant tape recorder, percussive effects. Even a song of frustration, I'm Horny, I'm Stoned, sounds happy. Vocally, none of the Doors's individual voices equals the compelling power of Jim Morrison at his best. Manzarek is even forced to imitate some of Morrison's more dramatic youmake the effects. The Doors, however, sing earnestly. and their vocals should improve with time. The Doors were a powerhouse operation during the Sixties.
