Alberta’s Heather Nedohin dropped her first game to Galusha.

Continued from 3 “At moments it can be tough staying confident in such an experienced field,” said Horgan, “but the crowd’s amazing, there will be some distractions we’re not used to but we’re going to enjoy all of this.” Battling Alberta’s Heather Nedohin team tooth and nail from the outset in the af- ternoon, Galusha trailed 5-3 after just four ends. Then she tied it in the fifth and stole ahead by one in the sixth. After an exchange of singles, Alberta trailed by one playing the 10th and Nedohin faced a tough raise takeout for the win but the offending Territories brick jammed, leav- ing Galusha in possession of the hammer in overtime. THE OFFICIAL SPIRIT “I didn’t think I was going to have a shot at the end but Heather missed her guard and we threw a nice control hit and we made it,” said Galusha of her in-turn angle raise OF CHAMPIONSHIP CURLING takeout. Galusha professes to be a “different curler” at this Scotties rendition. “We had our practice yesterday and we talked about the ice,” she said. “A lot of times we come here and struggle on arena ice. he isn’t the first Territories curler to win the Ford SHot Shots — the last one already has moved back to Newfoundland — but Yellowknife skip Kerry Galusha’s Saturday win at the Enmax Centrium may have been among the most surprising. Suffering from a longstand- ing lack of competition, curlers from the Territories rarely are heralded to win anything at Canadian championships. But Galusha defied those odds, outpointing Newfoundland/Lab- rador skip Heather Strong 19-14 in a final matchup nobody could have predicted. The Hot Shots shotmaking competition requires the par- ticipating curlers to execute six shots: Hit and stay, draw the button, draw the port, raise, hit and roll, and double takeout. Each shot is awarded points on a scale from 0-to-5, rating the success of each. Ford of Canada provided Galusha with a two-year lease on a 2012 Ford Focus Titanium, an approximate retail value of $13,000. Strong, the second- place finisher, won $2,000, while the third-place finisher Heather Kalenchuk, lead for Team Canada received $1,000. –Heart Chart staff Game loses a legend in Austman Saskatoon’s Stan Austman - whose sliding prowess prompted the curl- ing powers to usher in its first hogline rules in the mid-1950s - passed away last month at age 75. Austman played on Bayne Secord’s Canadian schoolboy-champion squads in 1954 and 1955. He was a fixture in the national curling com- munity for decades, and his dream of playing in a Brier finally came true in 1985, when Eugene Hritzuk took him along as a fifth man. When second Nick Paulsen developed bad stomach cramps in the middle of a win over Nova Scotia, Austman took over. He played five ends, and — apart from one missed peel — curled a perfect game. Austman, then 48, literally wept tears of joy at the end of the game. “He reached over, shook my shoulder, and said ‘Eugene, now my life is complete. I’m ready to die,’ “ Hritzuk told Kevin Mitchell of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix. “He’d always wanted to curl in a Brier. That was his dream. “He’d resigned himself to the fact he was never going to get to the Brier, then this hap- pened. And I’ll tell you — he was ecstatic. I’ve never seen anybody so happy about curling a game in all my life as when Stan Austman walked off the ice after playing that one.” Austman first came to public prominence in 1954 at the national schoolboy championship, when he slid out of the hack and all the way down the ice, rock in hand. He placed the stone in the house as he slid past. The Dominion Curling Association (now Canadian Curling Association), alarmed at what they saw, instigated a hogline rule to prevent that from happening in the future. “There was nobody I know who had more stories about curling - most of which he’d experienced himself,” Hritzuk said. “That guy lived a curling life like no one else. He curled everywhere, and curled everybody, and when you’d listen to him, I’m sure he experienced every situation possible. And he could remember them like they happened yesterday. He was an incredible person.” – Heart Chart staff Page 22 HeartChart N.B. • Atkinson Road to Red Deer Rangy Andrea Kelly, 26, is back for the earning a direct berth to the final match. fifth time as the director of New Bruns- Their Round-Six showdown endured wick’s hopes at the Scotties Tournament to an extra end before the Atkinson-Kelly Of Hearts but the UNB grad has tweaked duo stole a 7-6 triumph. the lineup this time.
