University of - Columbia MISSOURI INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COUNCIL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS' SURVIVAL GUIDE 1

Dear students,

Many months - perhaps even years - ago you began the journey that brings you now to Columbia as you purse your educational goals. Some of you may have discovered the by researching our excellent programs and facilities. Others may have first heard of us through personal connections - a trusted friend or family member. Still others might have met one of our own faculty members as they visited your home country. Whatever the reason, we're delighted that you've decided to study at MU and live in Columbia.

The Office of the Vice Provost, along with the MU International Center, is committed to providing whatever assistance needed to ensure your success. In the upcoming days and weeks you will learn of the numerous services and programs in place to support your academic and personal growth. This guide, produced by our good friends, the Missouri International Student Council (MISC), offers great advice on how to access these resources. We congratulate MISC for this issue of the Survival Guide, and I hope you find it useful.

Beyond pursuing and achieving academic success, encourage you to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn as much as you can about the United States and also to share your own rich Cultural background with those you encounter. Your presence at MU enriches both our campus and Community. I personally believe that the relationships and friendships you develop here contribute directly to our shared pursuit of realizing a world guided by mutual respect and understanding.

Finally, please do not hesitate to let me or the staff in any of the International Programs offices know how we can best meet your needs and interests. We look forward to meeting and getting to know you throughout your time at Mizzou.

Best wishes,

JAMES K. SCOTT Interim Vice Provost for International Programs Director of the International Center 2

Dear new international students,

Welcome to the University of Missouri! We’re so pleased that you’ve chosen to become part of our community of discovery and excellence. The International Student and Scholar Services staff are looking forward to assisting you and helping you get off to a good start this year. We want to help you make the transition smoothly and successfully and encourage you to utilize the services and support provided through the MU International Center.

It’s well known that international students are very dedicated to their studies and strengthen our academic environment through their exceptional intellect and strong work ethic. However, the challenge that most new international students face during the first year of study is developing supportive social connections outside the classroom. This can easily be remedied by getting involved in a student organization, working on campus part-time, participating in a conversation or friendship program offered through the International Center or through other campus and community groups. The benefits of these co-curricular activities are immense and can make a huge difference in the quality of your university experience as well as result in life-long friendships and future career connections.

Therefore, in conclusion, get involved! And if you need assistance or guidance on how best to do this, please don’t hesitate to seek help through the MU International Center and the International Student and Scholar Services staff team. We are committed to your success!

Go Tigers!

DAVID CURREY Director, International Student and Scholar Services Assistant Director, International Center 3

Hello Tigers,

As the President of Missouri International Student Council (MISC) as well as a fellow Mizzou Tiger, I would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to you.

Though I am not an international student, I can certainly identify with what you must be feeling at this moment—excitement, uncertainty, and missing home. I came to the U.S.A with my family when I was thirteen years old in pursuit of good education and so much more. So, although I might not completely understand your predicament, I can relate with what you must be feeling. Different environment, culture, and population can seem intimidating, but what I have learned so far in my journey here at Mizzou is this: Anyplace, including Mizzou, is full of unexplored potential and opportunities. I have connected with some of the most amazing people and developed my character to a higher extent by exploring the unexplored. So, I invite you to explore Mizzou with me.

I, along with my fellow MISC members, are here to help you with anything you might need along your journey here at Mizzou. We work hard to ensure you feel at home at MU through hosting various events that share different cultures within the international community on campus. Two of the biggest annual events we host are International Day Flag Parade and Game of Champions. Our events are open to all and aim to increase participation of international as well as domestic students. We certainly hope you attend at least one of our events and experience the diverse Mizzou community.

Also, please reach out to MISC without hesitation if ever in need of anything. Hope to see you soon!

Whether you are going home during an extended university break, or are just leaving town for a couple of days, the following tips are ways to increase the security of your Columbia residence: - Be sure there is good lighting around all doors, especially those doors not visible from the street. You could even leave a light on to deter potential home invaders. - Lock all doors and windows, and place a bar in the track of sliding doors. Do not hide spare keys in places outside. - Take anything of value with you. Don't leave any valuable items near windows. Take pictures of any valuables in case they are stolen. - Stop mail and paper delivery. - Arrange for a trusted neighbor to watch over your house or store your valuables with while you are away. - Contact the Columbia Police Department and request a WIP (watch in passing). Provide them with the following information: your name, address, when you will be leaving, when you will return, a contact number, whether or not there will be cars and what types, and if there will be lights on in the house. Please let them know if someone will be stopping by to feed any pets, water the plants, and/or collect mail. 15 Office for Civil Rights and Title IX

The Office for Civil Rights and Title IX coordinates nondiscrimination and equity efforts across campus. This office is responsible for enforcing the university's nondiscrimination policies, educating the community and connecting people to resources that can support them if they experience discrimination or retaliation.
