His second collection of poems, titled “Hinterland” (Endochora), where he attempted to merge surrealism with Greek tradition, was published ten years later, while in 1960 his prose work “Writings or Personal Mythology” (Grapta i Prosopiki Mythologia) was released. His first large, narrative work titled “Argo or the Voyage of a Balloon” (Argo i Plous aerostatou) was initially published in instalments in the literary magazine “Pali” as well as the French magazine “Mercure de ”, in 1964-1965. It was followed by the poetry collection “Oktana”, which includes 31 lyrical texts about love, death and the vision of a new world, while in 1984 his poetry collection “Every Generation or Today as Tomorrow and as Yesterday” (Ai geneai pasai i I Simeron os avrion kai os chthes) was released. His eight-volume novel “The Great Eastern” (O Megas Anatolikos), one of the largest and most daring novels of , was published between 1990 and 1992. In 1998, his prose work “Zemphyra or the Secret of Pasiphae” (Zemphyra i to mystiko tis Pasifais) was released, which is part of a trilogy titled “Ta chaimalia tou erota kai ton armaton” that had so far remained unpublished. Apart from literature, his involvement with photography, from the age of 18, produced rich and varied results. Initially in 2004 and then in 2006, Embirikos’ entire pre-war archive, which includes photographs, letters and handwritten versions of some of his poems, was discovered. His complete literary work is considered to be inextricably linked to the classic Freudian perspective of psychoanalytic practice, while he believed that surrealism represented psychoanalysis in art. Embirikos, and all of Greek surrealism, received harsh criticism over a long period of time, to the point of ridicule. His work was universally accepted only posthumously, while recent reviews consider him the most prominent representative of Greek surrealism.

The Collection of the Bank’s Library includes a large number of works by Andreas Embirikos, such as poems, prose works, studies and more.

The J. F. Costopoulos Foundation

he Centre for the Study of Traditional Pottery - G. Psaropoulos Foundation realised the educational programme “I see by T touching” on Friday, November 9, 2018, in collaboration with Very Special Arts Hellas.

The aim of the Programme was to give visually impaired people equal opportunities to access the museum environment.

Through the palpation of traditional vases, visually impaired people came into contact with the art of pottery, learned about the shapes, the size and use of the vases, and at the same time released their feelings by forming shapes with clay.

The Programme was attended by visually impaired people and additional disabilities, together with their escorts, from the “Amymoni” Association (Association of Parents, Guardians and Friends of Persons with Visually Impaired Disabilities and Additional Disabilities).

The action is part of a series of educational programmes supported by The J. F. Costopoulos Foundation.

The Bonus Programme is changing and getting better! “It is not a Reward Programme. It’s an experience!”

Following a 12-year presence and millions of points that have been redeemed, one of the most successful Reward Programmes in Greece, the Bonus Programme, is growing and acquiring a new identity. The Programme’s logo is also being renewed, becoming more modern, without, nonetheless, losing its key characteristics. Following the minimalist principles, a colourful ring was designed maintaining the symbolism of the Programme’s inclusive character and constant development, both of which are key elements of the Bonus Programme.

The promotional campaign of the renewed Bonus Programme, based on the contrast between material goods and what lies behind them, suggests a new way of approaching daily life, where experience, optimism and timeless values – namely all that makes every moment better – play a leading role. That, precisely, is what the Bonus Programme is all about and it is also the campaign’s main message: “It is not a Reward Programme. It’s an experience!”.

< 33 / 55 > IN FOCUS

The new, modern approach that Bonus has adopted is further reflected in the way that it is promoted; apart from traditional Media such as television and Printed Media, particular attention has been paid to online and social media.

Highly indicative is the use of the hashtag #kaliteramebonus, which accompanies all promotional material while, at the same time, it also features prominently in the Programme’s Partners.

Promotional activities for the renewed Bonus Programme will run through the end of the year, while new products, promotional activities and offers have also been scheduled.

Yannis Moralis Young woman, 1972 Acrylic on canvas 116x106 cm

he Art Network is dedicated to Yannis Moralis, on the occasion of the great retrospective exhibition currently on T display at the Benaki Museum. The Alpha Bank Art Collection includes 41 works by Moralis, covering all aspects of his work (paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, books, posters, architectural compositions, tapisserie).

The Collection has lent the following works to the Benaki Museum exhibition: the Model for the Hilton façade, 1960, the Decorative reliefs for the Hilton hotel, 1962, the Portrait of Stratis Andreadis, 1973 and Time, 1983.

The 1972 painting titled Young woman, is, along with the Girl painting, 1971 and the Girl untying her sandal, 1973, the ideal triptych of a young woman, alone, pensive and monumental. These three works, rendered exclusively in white, black, grey and light ochre, depict bodies caught in subtle daily movements, with a monumental glow.

< 45 / 55 > CULTURE SPECIAL • ART NETWORK

The Young woman belongs to the large series of works titled ‘Epithalamia’, produced between 1965 and 1970, a time when Moralis’ painting literally evolved from one work to another, developing from realistic depictions to consciously deconstructing a painting’s components and only keeping what is essential. The painting is a game with shapes: horizontal and vertical lines define the surface, creating a dark and neutral plain background, where the reclining form unravels. The body, in sheer white, made up almost exclusively of curved shapes, doubles up tightly in the deliberately narrow, painting surface. In this case, Moralis recalls the figures depicted on the Kerameikos funerary monuments that have influenced him greatly, namely the iconic women caught in oblivion, isolated in the strict rectangular shape of the outline.

Certain small surfaces of light pink infiltrate the prevalence of black, grey and white, while the painting is lit up by a thin, intensely yellow outline, surrounding the dark window, which perhaps represents the light of Aegina’s full moon.

Poet Odysseus Elytis, a friend of Yannis Moralis who also worked with him, wrote the following in the preface of the 1972 exhibition catalogue where the painting was first showcased:

“ … Τhe earth of Attica and Aegina, the bodies of young girls, the light which is identified with a moral and physical nobility, are seen in Moralis’ latest work to rise some times with the dampness of the sea- like magnificent pieces of ancient vases, or reduced frescoes of places of worship now lost forever.”

< 46 / 55 > CULTURE SPECIAL • ART NETWORK

YANNIS MORALIS CURRICULUM VITAE (Arta 1916 - Athens 2009) H e studied painting and printmaking at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Umberto Argyros and Yiannis Kefallinos (1931-36) and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1937-39). In 1947, he was elected professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he taught until 1983. He is regarded as one of the greatest Greek artists of the postwar generation. His work spans six decades and includes paintings, stage and costume designs, prints, illustrations of books and other publications, posters, ceramics, architectural applications and much more. His early works combine ancient Greek civilization with the modern European trends of the interwar period as well as the Renaissance principles. Striking a balance between depth and subject, the arrangement of his compositions reflects a certain pace, as they are gradually released from anything unnecessary. From 1960, he mostly used geometric shapes to depict forms, which, as their material existence is gradually eliminated, become symbols. In 1988, on the occasion of his first large retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery, Moralis made a big donation, namely 113 of his works. He also donated works to the Benaki Museum as well as the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation, where a large part of his archive is kept.

Prefecture of Magnesia Demetrias

emetrias (known today as Volos) was founded in 293 BC by Demetrios Poliorcetes, whom it was also named after, following the union D (synoecism) of various cities in Magnesia. After his death, his son Antigonos Gonatas gave the urn containing his father’s ashes to the city. Due to its prominent location, Demetrias became a major strategic centre and port of the Macedonian Antigonid dynasty. After the end of the 2nd Macedonian war, in 197 BC, Philip V was obliged to hand over Demetrias and the whole of Magnesia to the Romans, who proceeded to destroy the city’s fortifications. In 194 BC, it became the capital of the newly-founded Magnesian League (Koinon ton Magneton). In 192 BC it was captured by the Aetolians and Antiochos III and in 191 BC the Romans gave the city back to Philip V. After the battle of Pydna, in 168 BC, and the fall of the Macedonian Kingdom, it came permanently under Roman rule. The city issued coins almost immediately after its foundation. Silver hemidrachms circulated around 290 BC, depicting the bust of Artemis Iolkia, the city’s patron, whose temple was found in the Agora, on the obverse. A ship’s prow, reminiscent of the coins of Demetrios Poliorcetes, was depicted on the reverse.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Commercial Bank of Greece, from 1929 through 1939.

He was born in Sourpi, Fthiotida, in 1870. He went to primary school in his hometown and then attended High School in Athens. In 1888, aged only 18, he was hired by the National Bank and became an “assistant” at the Lamia Branch. He worked in a series of Branches and then moved on to a Department of the Head Office, something that enabled him to study, at the same time, at the Athens University Law School. In 1902, he became Auditor at the National Bank and six years later he was appointed Head of the Audit Department. In 1911, he was placed in one of the two Manager positions that were created in the National Bank of Greece’s organisational chart, and was in charge of the section of mortgage credit section. Three years later, he became Sub-Governor of the National Bank of Greece.

In 1918, as a result of the changes that occurred in the Management of the National Bank of Greece, the two Sub-Governors were abolished and the position of the Co-Governor was established instead, where Ioannis Drossopoulos was elected. A year later, and for a two-month period, he served as Minister of Supplies at the Alexandros Zaimis Government. In 1926, he served, again for two months, as Minister of Finance, at the extra-parliamentary cabinet of Georgios Kondylis.

In 1927, when the National Bank of Greece founded the National Mortgage Bank, Drossopoulos became Governor in the latter, while remaining, at the same time, Co-Governor of the former. A few months later, following the signature of the Protocol that paved the way for the establishment of a Central Bank in Greece, Drossopoulos was elected Governor of the National Bank of Greece, replacing Alexandros Diomidis, who moved to the newly-founded Bank of Greece. From his position as National Bank of Greece Governor, Drossopoulos had to deal with the difficult 1929 economic crisis.

Meanwhile, as of 1929, Drossopoulos was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Commercial Bank of Greece, a position he remained in until early 1939. He played a key role in dealing with the major problems that the Commercial Bank faced, which mostly stemmed from the bankruptcy of the Greek state.

During all the years that he worked at the National Bank of Greece, Drossopoulos was also a Board Member at other important companies of that time, such as the “Titan” Cement Co. S.A., the Hellenic Chemicals and Fertilizers Co. and more. In addition, during the Interwar years, he became Chairman of the Hellenic Power Company, which provided Athens and Piraeus with electricity.

In the summer of 1939, following the resignation of Emmanouil Tsouderos who was Governor at the Bank of Greece, the Ioannis Metaxas Government appointed Drossopoulos to his place. Drossopoulos took over on July 10, 1939, but was only active for a few days, as he suddenly passed away on July 27, 1939.
