GAVIL: To open today’s workshop, it is my very great pleasure to introduce and welcome Assistant Attorney General Bill Baer of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division, who will offer some welcome remarks, to be followed by FTC Commissioner Maureen Ohlhausen. Please join me in welcoming Bill Baer. [APPLAUSE] INTRODUCTORY REMARKS • William J. Baer, Assistant Attorney General, Antitrust Division, U.S. Department of Justice • Maureen K. Ohlhausen, Commissioner, Federal Trade Commission WILLIAM BAER: I am going to take Andy’s introduction as that my remarks are “welcome” rather than “welcoming remarks.” I want to welcome you all to this joint workshop, both those of you here in the room and those of you on the webcast. This joint Department of Justice/FTC Conditional Pricing Practices Workshop is a great celebratory event to be able to have this at the new FTC Conference Center. And it is great to share the podium not just with Andy and our next panel, but with Commissioner Ohlhausen. As many of you know, the FTC and the Department of Justice Antitrust Division have held a series of workshops over the years on significant antitrust policy and enforcement issues. The goal is to illuminate challenging antitrust problems and studying—having these kinds of hearings are integral to our effort to make smart enforcement decisions. Perhaps most importantly, they fulfill that joint commitment the two agencies have to work with the public in identifying issues of significant importance in antitrust policy. We work hard at both agencies to analyze and understand the difficult questions so each of us can make the right enforcement decisions. When these sorts of recurring problems with broad implications for the economy arise, we think it is very helpful, very productive, to bring the best and the brightest together to discuss the issues. That is why in the last couple of 4 years we have held workshops on most favored nation clauses and patent assertion entity activities. And that is why we are holding today’s Conditional Pricing Practices Workshop. These practices, including loyalty and bundled pricing, are common throughout the economy. They arise in many forms and across many industries. And there’s debate, considerable debate, among lawyers, among economists, and others about the competitive effects and what the right legal analysis is in evaluating them. Courts that have analyzed loyalty and bundled pricing have generated different and sometimes conflicting tests for finding liability. We are aware, and I think need to continue to be aware, that conditional pricing practices, in many cases, save consumers money. Many of us benefit from some kind of loyalty or bundle pricing in the retail setting. You may have gotten a cup of coffee this morning and used your smartphone app or your frequent buyer card in your pocket to get a free latte. Others take advantage of bundled pricing at fast food restaurants where you can get—you can super-size it, get your fries, your burger, your 74 ounce Coke. Those tend to be cheaper than buying them separately. These are not, as a general matter, the kinds of conditional pricing practices we worry about. We do have concerns, however, when a monopolist, when a dominant firm uses loyalty or bundled pricing in a way that restricts competition and maintains or enhances a position of market power within a supply chain. The Division’s most recent enforcement action in this area was in 2011 involving United Regional Health Care system of Wichita Falls, Texas. United Regional enjoyed significant market power. It had entered into contracts with insurers that required them to pay significantly higher prices if they contracted with competing hospitals. Because the insurers needed United Regional's business—it was the dominant firm in the area to compete in Wichita Falls. The penalty for contracting with rivals was so severe that almost every insurer in the area entered into exclusive dealing arrangements with United Regional. That, in turn, reinforced the dominant position of United Regional, and it kept prices higher. Our enforcement action ultimately resulted, done jointly with the Texas AG’s office, in a consent decree, which prevented United Regional from engaging in these practices going forward. 5 Now, as I said at the beginning, it is not always easy to draw the line between the pricing practices that injure competition and those that don’t. We want to be careful in drawing that line because we don’t want to discourage the kinds of legitimate discounts

Honey, Master of Science Utah State University, 2020 Major Professor: Dr. Eric César Morales Program: American Studies This paper examines the shifting portrayals of Pacific Islanders in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) across three generations. As both a popular and historically racially problematic venue, WWE’s politically incorrect programming has played an underappreciated and under examined role in representing the USA. Although 4 many different groups have been portrayed by gross stereotypes in WWE, this paper uses the family of Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson—the Samoan Dynasty—as a case study. The WWE originally presented Pacific Islanders using the most offensive stereotypes, and the first two generations of the Samoan Dynasty had to “play Indian” or cosign onto gross representations of their people to be recognized by American audiences unfamiliar with representations of Pacific Islanders.

Although this staff teaches specific technical components of this sport, it is our belief that there is more than one way to wrestle. We work tirelessly to bring in an array of technique, giving each individual the best chance at personal success. There is however on area of wrestling that we believe is absolute. A Tartan wrestler must be a hard worker who strives to be in the best physical shape possible. We believe in the adage, “hard work beats talents, when talent doesn’t work hard.” Our expectations of our wrestlers are that they will out work their opponent each and every day. Our objective is to wear our opponent down so that we can physically break them. The third period should be our best, as our opponent fatigues and we are able to remain fundamentally sound due to superior conditioning. It is no accident when a Tartan wrestler wins a close match or a match in which they trailed. NEEDS AND VALUES OF WRESTLING The wrestling mat provides a constructive outlet for energies that are symptomatic of restless and uncertain teenagers.

    Oral Tradition, 29/1 (201X): 127-148 The Oral Poetics of Professional Wrestling, or Laying the Smackdown on Homer William Duffy Since its development in the first half of the twentieth century, Milman Parry and Albert Lord’s theory of “composition in performance” has been central to the study of oral poetry (J. M. Foley 1998:ix-x). This theory and others based on it have been used in the analysis of poetic traditions like those of the West African griots, the Viking skalds, and, most famously, the ancient Greek epics.1 However, scholars have rarely applied Parry-Lord theory to material other than oral poetry, with the notable exceptions of musical forms like jazz, African drumming, and freestyle rap.2 Parry and Lord themselves, on the other hand, referred to the works they catalogued as performances, making it possible to use their ideas beyond poetry and music. The usefulness of Parry-Lord theory in studies of different poetic traditions tempted me to view other genres of performance from this perspective. In this paper I offer up one such genre for analysis —professional wrestling—and show that interpreting the tropes of wrestling through the lens of composition in performance provides information that, in return, can help with analysis of materials more commonly addressed by this theory. Before beginning this effort, it will be useful to identify the qualities that a work must possess to be considered a “composition in performance,” in order to see if professional wrestling qualifies. The first, and probably most important and straightforward, criterion is that, as Lord (1960:13) says, “the moment of composition is the performance.” This disqualifies art forms like theater and ballet, works typically planned in advance and containing words and/or actions that must be performed at precise times and following a precise order.

In many cases, they are conceptions that simplify and even caricaturize phenomena of a complex nature. When applied to societies or cultures, they l11ayinclude value judgments that are true or false, specific or ambiguous. If the stereotype refers to orie's own tradition, it emphasizes the positive and the virtuous, and it tends to praise: The Greeks are recalled as philosophers and the Romans as great builders. On the other hand, if the stereotype refers to another tradition , it stresses the negative, the faulty, and it tends to denigrate: For many, Sicilians naturally belong to the Mafia, Pygrnies are cannibals, and the Aztecs were cruel sacrificers. As we will see, many lines of evidence confirm that hurnan sacrifice was one the most deeply rooted religious traditions of the Aztecs. However, it is clear that the Aztecs were not the only ancient people that carried out massacres in honor of their gods, and there is insufficient quantitative inforrnation to determine whether the Aztecs were the people who practiced hu- man sacrifice 1110stoften. Indeed, sacred texts, literary works, historie documents, and especially evidence contributed by archaeology and physical anthropology, enable religious historians to determine that the practice of hurnan sacrifice was common in most parts of the ancient world.     CORRUPTION AS A SELF-REINFORCING “TRAP”: IMPLICATIONS FOR REFORM STRATEGY MATTHEW C. STEPHENSON* Abstract: Corruption is widely believed to be a self-reinforcing phenomenon, in the sense that the incentive to engage in corrupt acts increases as corruption becomes more widespread in the relevant community. Leading scholars have argued that corruption’s self-fulfilling property implies that incremental anticorruption reforms cannot be effective, and that the only way to escape a high-corruption equilibrium “trap” is through a “big bang” approach. This paper demonstrates that this widespread view is mistaken: After surveying the reasons corruption might be self-reinforcing (or in some cases self- limiting), the paper demonstrates that corruption’s self-reinforcing property does not imply the necessity of a “big bang” approach to reform, and indeed may strengthen the case for pursuing sustained, cumulative incremental anticorruption reforms. * Eli Goldston Professor of Law, Harvard Law School. Interview narratives revealed that motherhood rarely functioned as a turning point per se that activated desistance, but caring for children did serve to solidify prosocial identities once offenders had transformed their addict/criminal identities. The reality for these mothers most often resembled a hostile terrain marked by the competing demands of battling addiction, finding employment and suitable housing with a criminal record, establishing visitation and custody rights in family court, and regaining the trust of children and family members who had long ago lost faith in their commitment to their families.

The INWR is the largest scientific support group for a sport in the world! (www.inwr-wrestling.com) Our Mission Statement is: The International Network of Wrestling Researchers (INWR) seeks to facilitate the development of wrestling around the world by drawing all wrestling sport science professionals together, in a manner that through our international and intercultural cooperation we are empowered to support the development of wrestling with our research and educational programs. We have organized scientific meetings at the senior world wrestling championships and we were instrumental in working with United World Wrestling (UWW) in establishing the Scientific Commission. The INWR sponsors the Rayko Petrov Award memorializing the great Bulgarian wrestler, coach and prolific scholar. Each year the INWR names the person to be honored and that person delivers the memorial lecture at the INWR Annual Meeting. They are presented with the spectacular bronze trophy by Christo Christov commissioned by the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation. The Young Researcher Award is also presented to a researcher less than thirty years of age. We publish the International Journal of Wrestling Science which is the only journal dedicated to the study of the world’s oldest sport. The International Journal of Wrestling Science is a peer reviewed journal for professionals working in wrestling and wrestling sport science.

OCC Champions 2. Sectional Champions 3. District Champions 4. Regional Champions 5. 5+ State Qualifiers 6. 5+ State Placers 7. Top 5 Finish @ State A goal without a plan is just a wish. Team Philosophies 1) We will work harder than our opponents; there is no substitute for hard work. 2) Respect- we will treat each other with respect, this doesn’t mean we will like everyone on the tem but we will treat each other with the respect they deserve by being here working hard side by side. 3) Every day is a chance to get better, take advantage of it. “Do Right Rule” The Marysville Wrestling coaches make the assumption that all Monarch Wrestlers know the difference between “right and wrong”. Monarch wrestlers are always expected to make the “right” decision in relation to matters of behavior, discipline, and academics. If a wrestler makes a “wrong” decision in relation to matters of behavior, discipline and academics, the coaching staff will assume that it was a conscious decision on the part of the athlete to do so… and the athlete will therefore be held accountable for willfully making a “wrong” decision. Accountability can range from being counseled by the head coach, suspension or dismissal from the team all to be decided according to the Marysville High School Athletic Code. The “Do Right Rule” is in effect 24 hours a day, both at school and away, for the duration of the athlete’s participation in the Monarch Wrestling Program.
