THE Open Door Crisis Care Centre in Pinetown still remains as a beacon of hope for abused victims since its establishment in 1997. The non-profi t organisation was started by Thora Mansfi eld at the request of the local South African Police Services to assist women and children who were victims of rape and domestic violence after seeing the work she did, working and helping women in township areas. The aim of the centre is to sustain a holistic, multifaceted one-stop crisis and trauma centre off ering counselling, social services and support groups. The homeless, victims of traffi cking, the broken hearted, the abused and abandoned children or women who face violence on an ongoing basis are the people who the centre reaches out to everyday. THIRTY year-old Lethukuthula Mbatha stood staring at the garden project which he and others started at a place which they regarded as their home since the beginning of lockdown. For many homeless people around Pinetown, Lahee Park was more than a shelter to them but a home which they have grown to love and treasure. On Thursday, 3 September the atmosphere turned sombre as occupants were still coming to terms with the sudden move. The homeless were notifi ed on Tuesday, 1 September that they would be moving to another camp on Saturday, 5 September. "The park had become a warm home for many of us, something most of us never felt. We were involved with so many uplifting projects," said Mbatha. He said moving to Durban is going to be hard. ARBOR WEEK NPO helps lay roots for future generations
A TOTAL of 188 trees were planted during The Kloof Project's annual Donate and Plant Arbor Day project. "There was a wonderful community buzz out there on Saturday morning, with the bonus of a light sprinkle of rain overnight just to give the new trees some respite from the heat of that day," said the non-profi t organisation's Chris Dalzell. The local residents said they looked forward to watching the saplings thrive in the years to come. "For those children involved, to enjoy the fruits of their labour and a new appreciation of how trees in Kloof are there to create the special environment we all love," he said.
