Irish Authors Collections Guide 18 August 2020 English Literature is one of the two greatest strengths of the Rosenbach’s library collections (the other being American history). What we usually call English Literature is more precisely the English-language literature of Great Britain, Ireland, and surrounding islands. Some of the greatest writers in the English language have been Irish. Dr. Rosenbach certainly recognized this, and although we don't know that he had a special interest in Irish writers as such, it means that he did collect a number of them. His interest was chiefly in pre-20th-century literature, so apart from James Joyce there are few recent writers represented. Although they are not segregated by country of origin on the Rosenbach shelves, this guide highlights Irish authors as a particular sub-set of English-language authors. The guide is arranged in alphabetical order by author’s last name, and in the instances of James Joyce, Bram Stoker, and Oscar Wilde, the list is further broken down by collections category. Throughout this guide, all objects owned by Dr. Rosenbach are marked with an asterisk (*). Those marked with double (**) are part of Philip Rosenbach’s gift to the Foundation on January 12, 1953, consisting partly of objects from Dr. Rosenbach’s estate. This guide will be updated periodically to reflect new acquisitions and further cataloging of the Rosenbach collections. Objects acquired since 2014 are marked with a “+”. SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER by Oliver Goldsmith THE AUTHOR Oliver Goldsmith (c.1728-1774) was born in Ireland, the son and grandson of Church of England rectors much like the central figure of his only novel. His family was poor but did manage to obtain an education for their son at Trinity College in Dublin, where he almost flunked out because he gave far too much attention to drinking and gambling, and at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied medicine. In early adulthood he wandered aimlessly from one job to another, including tutoring and practicing medicine, both of which he found largely unprofitable. Finally he found his true love, writing, beginning as an editor of the Monthly Review. Most of his editing and numerous translations of the works of others left little mark on his own time, let alone on future generations. He wrote on whatever subject would bring in money, whether he knew anything about it or not, and some of his largest works, including an eight-volume History of the Earth and Animated Nature and histories of England and Rome were largely plagiarized and frequently inaccurate. Amidst all the dross, however, were nuggets of gold – two poems, The Traveller (1764) and The Deserted Village (1770), two plays, The Good Natured Man (1768) and She Stoops to Conquer (1773), and one novel, The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), containing some of the finest writing the English language has ever known. Despite his undeniable talent and versatility as a writer, Goldsmith’s personal life was a disaster. He never forgot the poverty in which he had grown up, thus lusted for riches, which he tended to drink and gamble away whenever they came his way. -

Dublin: Carysfort Press, 2018. 239-259. “Goldsmith, the Gate, and the ‘Hibernicising’ of Anglo-Irish Plays” Dr. David Clare (Mary Immaculate College, UL) In recent decades, Irish theatre-makers have frequently imposed Irish elements onto the “English” plays written by London-based, Irish Anglican playwrights. As discerning critics have long recognised, George Farquhar, Oliver Goldsmith, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Oscar Wilde, and Bernard Shaw frequently signalled their Irish origins in their plays. Often cited are their satirical portraits of the English, their subversive use of Stage Irishmen, and their inclusion of Irish topical references. However, since independence (and even more markedly since the early 1980s), Irish theatres and theatre companies have not been satisfied with such coded expressions of Irishness. Bowing to popular, narrow conceptions of Irish identity – and perhaps demonstrating their discomfort with the Irish/British cultural hybridity of these writers1 – Irish theatre-makers have frequently had certain English, Scottish, or continental European characters in these works played as Irish, or have re-set the plays in Ireland. When “Hibernicising” these scripts, Irish theatre-makers have, on occasion, cleverly highlighted Irish aspects of these plays which were in danger of going unnoticed, or have added an extra Irish dimension which was appealing to Irish audiences and which did not distort the plays as a whole. -

Chapter 9 “[S] ome employment in the translating Way”: Economic Imperatives in Charlotte Lennox’s Career as a Translator Marianna D’Ezio Although motivated by a genuine passion for writing, money was a constant and pressing issue in Charlotte Lennox’s (1730?- 1804) ca- reer as a writer, as well as in her personal life. In 1747 she married Alexander Lennox, an employee of the printer William Strahan, but their union was unfortunate, especially with regards to finan- cial matters. Lennox eventually achieved much- coveted recogni- tion with the success of her novel The Female Quixote, published anonymously in 1752. However, her work as a translator is an aspect of her literary career that has not been adequately researched, and indeed began as merely a way to overcome the distressing finan- cial situation of her family. This essay examines Lennox’s activity as a translator as impelled by her perpetual need for money, within a cultural milieu that allowed her to be in contact with the most influential intellectuals of her time, including Samuel Richardson, Samuel Johnson, Giuseppe Baretti (who likely taught her Italian), and David Garrick, who produced her comedy Old City Manners at Drury Lane (1775) and assisted her in the publication of The Female Quixote. fr na A comprehensive — and occasionally hilarious—study of the three-day fes tival staged by David Garrick, the brilliant actor and manager of the Drury Lane Theatre in London, at Stratford-upon-Avon, in September, 1769. This was the first Shakespeare fes tival to engage national interest, and although its critics vilified it as a fiasco and a monumental example of bad taste, its defenders thought it a glorious occasion. James Boswell, a member of the latter group, de scribed it as being ((not a piece of farce . , but an elegant and truly classical celebration of the memory of Shakespeare."
