  • Chapter 17-Pakistan Citizens Crossed the Line of Control in Kashmir
Chapter 17 PAKISTAN Islamic Republic of Pakistan Area: 803,900 km2 Population: 152.53 million (June 30, 2005) Capital: Islamabad Language: Urdu, English, and four other major languages Religion: Islam Government type: Federal republic Chief of state: President General Pervez MUSHARRAF Currency: rupee (PKR) (US$1 = Rs 59.36; FY2005 average) Fiscal year: July–June 541 Citizens Crossed the Line of Control in Kashmir MOMOE MAKINO n August 2005, local body elections were held for the second time after I President General Pervez Musharraf seized power in 1999. Formally, all candidates were designated as independent, nonpartisan candidates, but in fact the election was a sweeping victory for the ruling party, the Pakistan Muslim League (PML). The election proclaimed itself to be grassroots democracy in action; however, in Pakistan the local landed elite are strong powerbrokers, and so even if elections are held, votes are affected by the influence of the local landowners. These local landowners used government decentralization to increase their power, and President Musharraf’s power base was also thereby strengthened. The earthquake that struck northern Pakistan on October 8 killed more than 73,000 people. International institutions, relief agencies from multiple countries, and domestic NGOs, etc., went to the scene of the dis- aster, where they continue their vigorous emergency support and recon- struction efforts. The massive damage in the area of Kashmir under Pakistani administration (Azad Kashmir) led to an improvement in the relations between Pakistan and India. While bus service across the Line of Control (LoC) had been already restored in April, five checkpoints on the LoC were opened up following the earthquake so that the LoC could be crossed even on foot.

Pakistan will be gearing up for its second consecutive democratic government transition later this month. Observant and political experts term the upcoming polls (on July 25, 2018) as one of the most toughest and tightly contested elections in Pakistan’s history. Based on our analysis, we believe that there will be a neck to neck contest between PML-N and PTI. However, there is 75% probability that the new coalition Govt. will be led by PTI along with independents and smaller parties. Since it will be a close contest, there is a 25% likelihood that PML-N forms a coalition Govt. with PPP and other parties and independents. In a poll of leading Corporates and Fund Managers, 77% believe PTI to lead the next govt. and were equally split between PML-N and PTI as to who will get the highest number of seats. 1 (31st Session) NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SECRETARIAT ———— “QUESTIONS FOR ORAL ANSWERS AND THEIR REPLIES” to be asked at a sitting of the National Assembly to be held on Friday, the 2nd April, 2021 30. *Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Behan: (Deferred during 29th Session) Will the Minister for Aviation Division be pleased to state the reasons of shifting the PIA Head Office and other relevant offices from Karachi to Islamabad? Minister for Aviation Division (Mr. Ghulam Sarwar Khan): The factual position is that the Head Office of PIACL is in Karachi and not being shifted to Islamabad. PIA is in the process of improving and restructuring the airline to make it a profitable venture despite severe constraints particularly COVID 19 Pandemic that has impacted airlines industry including PIACL. Presently, PIA is operating maximum flights from North of Pakistan, therefore, to meet the operational requirements, few departments have been shifted to Islamabad to run the operation smoothly. 31. *Ch. A GREAT BETRAYAL IN THE NAME OF CHANGE PERFORMANCE OVERVIEW OF KP GOVERNMENT (May 2013 – Sept 2014) HIGHLIGHTS A GREAT BETRAYAL IN THE NAME OF CHANGE PERFORMANCE OVERVIEW OF KP GOVERNMENT (May 2013 – Sept 2014) Agenda 1. Introduction 2. Economic Performance 3. Social Sector 4. Political Infights 5. Administrative collapse 6. Electoral KP 7. Neglected segments 8. Independent Surveys Introduction 1. Tall claims were made in 2013 elections of a better governance model by PTI based on which it got elected 2. Since past 14 months we have not seen the “Naya” Pakistan promised neither in D-Chowk nor in KP. 3. PTI attracted new segment of youth, women and the educated middle class into voting; but it ended up polluting their minds with hatred and introduced a politics of blames minus proofs. 4. The idea of WP is not to attract more abuses PTI style but to open the eyes of those who claim to be educated to the failed PTI model in KP where real change could have been a role model for Pakistan. 5. Whilst PTI has mastered the art of breaking all laws, wanting to be treated VIP by not adhering to any laws, and of conducting failed dharnas and entertaining jalsas it has not learnt how to deliver when blessed with governance in KP. Economic performance • Second lowest among all provinces for generating tax revenues at Rs11.7 b vs Punjab at 96.4b • Investment road show under WB $20 m Economic Revitalization of ERKF postponed again by KP govt. • Closed industries package unannounced and unimplemented.

  • Parliamentarians Tax Directory
PARLIAMENTARIANS TAX DIRECTORY FOR YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2017 (Published on 22nd February 2019) FOREWORD Every country levies taxes to raise revenues which are essential for the running of affairs of a state and provision of public services. Development of a progressive taxation system is an essential tool to reduce social inequalities in a society and bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. The countries exhibiting due diligence in collection of taxes from the affluent segments of the society through progressive taxation and expending them judiciously for the welfare of the poor are rated high on transparency and good governance index. Efficient, fair and sustainable tax systems are critical for institution building and promoting democracy and improved economic governance. The need for transparency and accountability in a vibrant democracy imposes extra responsibility on public representatives for disclosure of their assets and the sources of their income. With these aims and objectives, Federal Board of Revenue published, its first Tax Directory of Parliamentarians in tax year 2013. However, this time, in line with the incumbent government’s reform agenda, The Directory embodies the policy of transparency and accountability through access to information. The publication of the Parliamentarians’ Tax Directory is an integral step towards ensuring transparency and informing voters about the tax- paying status of their elected representatives. Tax Directory of the honourable Parliamentarians for the tax year 2017 is now published. The directory contains tax details of members of the Senate of Pakistan and Members of the National as well as Provincial Assemblies. I would like to appreciate the efforts of the Federal Board of Revenue for compiling and publishing this tax directory.
