  • Cemeteries Strategy for the London Borough of Brent
Cemeteries Strategy for the London Borough of Brent Table of Contents Executive Summary Section1: Introduction Section 2: Current Provision Section 3: Demand for Burial Space Section 4: Income and Expenditure Section 5: Key Issues and Areas for Development Section 6: Vision and Objectives Appendices Appendix 1: Legal Background and Statutory Powers Appendix 2: Action Plan Appendix 3: Consultation Report 1 Executive Summary Brent Council is a burial authority by virtue of the Local Government Act 1972 and is legally obliged to maintain its cemeteries ‘in good order and repair’ 1. It is not legally obliged to provide new burial space but the sale of space generates income that funds the maintenance of cemeteries and provides a service to residents. If the council does not continue to provide new burial space to meet demand, maintenance costs will still have to be met, creating a budget shortfall. The council owns and manages three cemeteries within the borough; Alperton, Paddington Old and Willesden New. It also jointly owns Carpenders Park Cemetery, located outside the borough within the area of Three Rivers District Council near Watford. Harrow Council owns approximately 25% of the burial land at Carpenders Park with Brent managing the whole cemetery as part of a joint delivery arrangement. The council is currently exploring options for the grounds maintenance and management of its cemeteries as part of its Managing the Public Realm project. The three cemeteries in Brent are traditionally laid out with memorial stones while Carpenders Park is a lawn cemetery with graves grassed over apart from horizontal memorial plaques. New land for graves is available at Carpenders Park but not at any of the cemeteries located in the borough.

During this period, jazz was presented in a variety of ways in different venues, on four of which I focus: New Orleans-style jazz commonly performed for the same audiences in Rhythm Clubs and in concert halls (as shown by George Webb’s Dixielanders at the Red Barn public house and the King’s Hall); clubs hosting different styles of jazz on different nights of the week that brought in different audiences (such as the 100 Club on Oxford Street); clubs with a fixed stylistic ideology that changed venue, taking a regular fan base and musicians to different locations (such as Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club); and jazz in theatres (such as the Little Theatre Club and Mike West- brook’s compositions for performance in the Mermaid Theatre).

  • Conservation Area Statement Hampstead 2
Conservation area statement Hampstead 2 Conservation & Urban Design Team London Borough of Camden Environment Department Town Hall Extension Argyle Street London WC1H 8ND Telephone: 020 7974 1944 Produced by Camden Design & Print END200/01 4279 Tel: 020 7974 1985 page 3 Location page 8 History page 12 Character page 46 Audit page 57 Current Issues page 59 Guidelines page 68 Road Index HAMPSTEAD Conservation Area Statement The aim of this Statement is to provide a clear indication of the Council’s approach to the preservation and enhancement of the Hampstead Conservation Area. The statement is for the use of local residents, community groups, businesses, property owners, architects and developers as an aid to the formulation and design of development proposals and change in the area. The statement will be used by the Council in the assessment of all development proposals. Camden has a duty under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 to designate as conservation areas any “areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.” Designation provides the basis for policies designed to preserve or enhance the special interest of such an area. Designation also introduces a general control over the demolition of unlisted buildings. The Council’s policies and guidance for Conservation Areas are contained in the Unitary Development Plan (UDP) and Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG). This Statement is part of SPG and gives additional detailed guidance in support of UDP policies. The Statement describes the character of the area, provides an outline of the key issues and identifies development pressures which are currently a cause of concern.

  • The CAMRA Regional Inventory for London Pub Interiors of Special Historic Interest Using the Regional Inventory
C THE CAMPAIGN FOR REAL ALE The CAMRA Regional Inventory for London Pub Interiors of Special Historic Interest Using the Regional Inventory The information The Regional Inventory listings are found on pages 13–47, where the entries are arranged alphabetically by postal districts and, within these, by pub names. The exceptions are outer London districts which are listed towards the end. Key Listed status Statutory listing: whether a pub building is statutorily listed or not is spelled out, together with the grade at which it is listed LPA Local planning authority: giving the name of the London borough responsible for local planning and listed building matters ✩ National Inventory: pubs which are also on CAMRA’s National Inventory of Pub interiors of Outstanding Historic Interest Public transport London is well served by public transport and few of the pubs listed are far from a bus stop, Underground or rail station. The choice is often considerable and users will have no di≤culty in easily reaching almost every pub with the aid of a street map and a transport guide. A few cautionary words The sole concern of this Regional Inventory is with the internal historic fabric of pubs – not with qualities like their atmosphere, friendliness or availability of real ale that are featured in other CAMRA pub guides. Many Regional Inventory pubs are rich in these qualities too, of course, and most of them, but by no means all, serve real ale. But inclusion in this booklet is for a pub’s physical attributes only, and is not to be construed as a recommendation in any other sense.

  • Remarkable Highgate Women a Joint Project Between the HLSI and Photographer Ruth Corney
Remarkable Highgate Women A joint project between the HLSI and photographer Ruth Corney This exhibition has developed from a project begun in the HLSI Archives to document the many Highgate women, aged 80 or more, who have made their mark on their community or further afield. They all deserve our notice, have done remarkable things and have lived life to the full. Working women, refugees, social activists, scientists, mothers, teachers, actors or writers – we want to know about them and to celebrate them. Hilary Laurie, HLSI I have long been fascinated by the faces of older women and have loved photographing them. Over the last 2 years, I have photographed 18 wonderful women. It has been a joy to meet them, to talk to them and to find out about their lives. I have found their positivity, resilience, vivacity, wisdom and generosity of spirit inspiring. Ruth Corney Eva Alberman Eva was born in Berlin in August 1929. When her father, a doctor, lost his job in 1933 the family left for London. Their house in Golders Green quickly became home to other family members. Eva was evacuated with a cousin to Bath to live with her father’s sister and her husband, the writer Stefan Zweig. In 1943 she was brought back home – ‘just in time for the rockets, but this didn’t worry me.’ At St Paul’s Girls’ School she took up the cello and ‘had lots of music and good friends’. She studied medicine at Newnham College, Cambridge and continued her training at the London Hospital, qualifying in 1955 with a first-class degree.
