ABSTRACT This study gives detailed morphological descriptions, including aspects of shell and soft-part anatomy, for 12 species of nine genera of hydrobiid snails (Gastropoda: Rissoacea) from the isolated desert spring system of Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila, Mexico. Snails were collected from 103 localities in the basin and summaries of the distribution and ecology for each species are given. One new genus and three new species are described. The six nominal species of Mexipyrgus are reduced to one variable species, Mexipyrgus churinceanus, as there are no suites of morphological features that can consistently define separate taxa when a large number of populations is studied. A multivariate morphological analysis of Mexipyrgus churinceanus, involving 20 morphological characters from 33 pop- ulations in the basin, shows that the trends of variation only partly follow the distribution of populations among the drainage systems of the basin. Contrary to previous thought, there are no subfamilies of hydrobiids endemic to the Cuatro Cienegas basin; all taxa studied belong to either the Nymphophilinae or Littoridininae, widely distributed subfamilies. Five genera and at least nine species are endemic to the basin. Phenetic and phyletic analyses show that of the five endemic genera, three are more closely related to nonendemic genera found in the basin than to each other, suggesting a polyphyletic origin for the endemic snails. The endemic snails may also be of a more recent and local origin than once thought. -

Early ontogeny and palaeoecology of the Mid−Miocene rissoid gastropods of the Central Paratethys. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 49 (1): 111–134. Twenty−six species of Rissoidae (Caenogastropoda: Littorinimorpha: Rissooidea) are described from the Badenian and Early Sarmatian of 14 localities in Austria and the Czech Republic (Molasse Basin, Styrian Basin, Vienna Basin) and from the Badenian of Coştei (Romania). For the first time, the early ontogenetic skeletal characters of these gastropods are de− scribed. Based on these features an indirect larval development with a planktotrophic veliger could be reconstructed for all investigated Mid−Miocene species. The status of Mohrensterniinae as a subfamily of the Rissoidae is confirmed by the mor− phology of the low conical protoconch, consisting of a fine spirally sculptured embryonic shell and a larval shell which is smooth except for growth lines. Transitions from embryonic shells to larval shells and from larval shells to teleoconchs are slightly thickened and indistinct. Whilst representatives of the subfamily Rissoinae characterise the marine Badenian assem− blages, Mohrensterniinae predominate the Early Sarmatian faunas. We hypothesize that this take−over by the Mohren− sterniinae was triggered by changes in the water chemistry towards polyhaline conditions. Consequently, the shift towards hypersaline conditions in the Late Sarmatian is mirrored by the abrupt decline of the subfamily. Four new species Rissoa costeiensis (Rissoinae) from the Badenian and Mohrensternia hollabrunnensis, Mohrensternia pfaffstaettensis,and Mohrensternia waldhofensis (Mohrensterniinae) from the Early Sarmatian are introduced. -

F. Müller), Xeropicta derbentina (Krynicki), X. krynickii (Krynicki), Cepaea vindobonensis (Férussac) and Helix albescens Rossmässler as examples. Morphometric shell variation, colour and banding pattern polymorphism as well as genetic polymorphism (allozymes and RAPD markers) were studied. The results and literature data were analysed in an attempt to link patterns to processes, with the following conclusions. Formation of patterns of intra- specific variation (initial processes of microevolution) takes different course at three different spatial scales. At micro-geographical scale the dominant role is played by eco-demographic characteristics of the species in the context of fluctuating environmental factors. At meso-geographical scale a special part is played by stochastic population-genetic processes. The list contains 193 species, representing 13 families and 61 genera. Of these, 103 species (53.4%) and 12 genera are endemic to Mexico, and 75 species are considered local endemics because of their restricted distribution to very small areas. Using NatureServe Ranking, 9 species (4.7%) are considered possibly or presumably extinct, 40 (20.7%) are critically imperiled, 30 (15.5%) are imperiled, 15 (7.8%) are vulnerable and only 64 (33.2%) are currently stable. -

The mollusc fauna of the Miocene Pebas Formation of Peruvian and Colombian Amazonia contains at least 158 mollusc species, 73 of which are introduced as new; 13 are described in open nomenclature. Four genera are introduced (the cochliopid genera Feliconcha and Glabertryonia, and the corbulid genera Pachy- rotunda and Concentricavalva) and a nomen novum is introduced for one genus (Longosoma). A neotype is designated for Liosoma glabra Conrad, 1874a. The Pebas fauna is taxonomically dominated by two fami- lies, viz. the Cochliopidae (86 species; 54%) and Corbulidae (23 species; 15%). The fauna can be character- ised as aquatic (155 species; 98%), endemic (114 species; 72%) and extinct (only four species are extant). Many of the families represented by a few species in the Pebas fauna include important ecological groups, such as indicators of marine infl uence (e.g., Nassariidae, one species), terrestrial settings (e.g., Acavidae, one species) and stagnant to marginally agitated freshwaters (e.g., Planorbidae, four species). -

Marstonia comalensis is a large congener having an ovate-conic, openly umbilicate shell and penis having a short fi lament and oblique, squarish lobe bearing a narrow gland along its distal edge. It is well diff erentiated morphologically from congeners having similar shells and penes and is also geneti- cally divergent relative to those congeners that have been sequenced (mtCOI divergence 3.0–8.5%). -
