  • 'The Enduring Relevance of Newspapers Speech to the Society of Editors
‘The Enduring Relevance of Newspapers Speech to the Society of Editors - Tuesday 20 October 10am. David Dinsmore, Chief Operating Officer, News UK CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY Good morning. I have a confession to make. I’m in therapy. It has been about 40 hours now since I witnessed Scotland lose to Australia in the dying moments on Sunday. I’ve no idea what it was like to be a neutral, but it is many years since I have heard the whole of Murrayfield chanting Scotland Scotland as one – and I don’t think we’ve ever heard that particular roar at Twickenham. For 80 glorious minutes, those bloody chariots were impounded in a secure facility somewhere off the M4. It was a magnificent day. It was an incredible story. For a moment we dreamed: were off to face Argentina in the semis…we could have them…and then you’re just a noravirus outbreak in the All Black dressing room from winning the World Cup. It was not to be. But what a day. What a story. And after tuning into non-stop abuse on social media, I quickly graduated to newspapers and their websites. What were the pundits saying? Why had the South African referee Craig Joubert got it so wrong? Why hadn’t he used the TMO (turns out he was right not to, but I needed a newspaper to clear it up for me), why had he run off the pitch like a scalded cat, not shaking a single player’s hand in the process? Why is it so hard being Scottish? Then I came across this snippet of brilliance from my colleagues on The Daily Telegraph in Sydney – the cheeky bastards had made Joubert man of the match.

FULL TITLE: rWind: Download, edit and include wind data in ecological and evolutionary analysis. AUTHOR LIST Javier Fernández -López, Real Jardín Botánico (CSIC), Madrid, Spain. ORCiD ID: https://orcid.org/0000 -0003-4352-0252 Klaus Schliep, University of Massachusetts Boston, Boston MA, USA ORCiD ID: https://orcid.org/0000 -0003-2941-0161 Corresponding author: Javier Fernández-Lópe z E -mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT 1. Wind connectivity has been identified as a key factor driving many biological processes. 2. Existing software available for managing wind data are often overly complex for studying many ecological processes and cannot be incorporated into a broad framework. 3. Here we present rWind, an R langauge package to download and manage surface wind da ta from the Global Forecasting System and to compute wind connectivity between locations. 4. Data obtained with rWind can be used in a general framework for analysis of biological processes to develop hypotheses about the role of wind in driving ecological and evolutionary patterns. KEYWORDS R, wind connectivity, landscape genetics SOFTWARE AVAILABILITY The stable version of rWind is released regularly on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN): https://CRAN.R -project.org/package=rWind and can be installed in R by typing the following command: install.packages("rWind") The development version of rWind is hosted on github: https://github.com/jabiologo/rWind rWind is distributed under GNU Public Licence (GPL) version 3 or greater. Further examples ca n be found on the blog of the first author: http://allthiswasfield.blogspot.com/ DECLARATIONS Acknowledgments – Wind data in rWind are kindly provided by the Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS), funded through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a Regional Association within the U.S.

Please circulate to your members or include this in your local newsletters. You can find all the latest news and opinions from the Co-operative Party at www.party.coop. A Co-operative vision for South London’s libraries Labour & Co-operative councillor Timothy Godfrey, Secretary of the London Co-operative Party, contrasts the possibilities for library services offered by co-operative solutions and the cuts and closures threatened by Croydon’s Conservatives In Croydon, local Labour & Co-operative Councillors have proposed to the ruling Conservative Council that instead of privatising the library service to a large scale private provider or another local authority under contract, the Council exploits an example of efficiency and popularity on its doorstep. The Upper Norwood Joint Library, is an independent library authority funded and run by two South London Councils, Croydon Council and Lambeth Council. Croydon Council spends £8million running one central library and 12 branch libraries. If you allow a generous £1.2million to run the central library, and its £200,000 contribution to the Upper Norwood Library (Lambeth and Croydon both contribute half the budget), that leaves a cost per branch library in Croydon at a staggering £550,000 per year. That might be acceptable, if the branch libraries in Croydon were well staffed, open long hours and in large buildings. They are not. They are small, often only open 4 days a week. To add insult to injury, the Conservative run council cut half of all qualified librarians last year in a ‘cost cutting’ drive.

In the UK, the media’s persistent focus on finding anything and everything problematic with Islam or Muslims has, to some extent, entered the subconscious of many parts of British society. Sober thinking parts of the academia and intelligentsia are now getting quite perturbed about it. This makes the on-going work of the MCB even more critical and relevant in today's climate and in the latter part of this address I will say a few words about this.

  • Brexit – Deal Or No Deal? – Reflections from CBS Brexit Breakfast
Brexit – Deal or No Deal? – Reflections from CBS Brexit Breakfast By Beverley Nielsen, Associate Professor at Institute for Design & Economic Acceleration and Senior Fellow at Centre for Brexit Studies The Centre for Brexit Studies ‘Deal or No-Deal’ Brexit Breakfast, hosted 6th September and chaired by Dr Jacob Salder, Research Fellow at Birmingham City Business School, met to consider the impacts on the West Midlands of recent Brexit events with daily curve balls being thrown up for business, institutions and citizens to contend with. Whilst breakfast discussions were held on 6th September, by Monday 9th September (date of writing) the situation had developed with (yet another) cabinet resignation, as Amber Rudd, former Work & Pensions Secretary, dramatically downed tools over the intervening weekend. Whilst listening to Women’s Hour on BBC Radio 4, 9th September, one contributor coined an apt phrase stating that Brexit has ‘burst through the veneer of our society’. The Economist (September 7th-13th), in reviewing the Unconservative Party’s revolution, transforming the world’s oldest political party into ‘radical populists’, commented on the constitutional havoc being wreaked through the longest prorogation of Parliament since 1945 and the whip being withdrawn from 21 Tory MPs — including two former Chancellors, seven former cabinet members and Churchill’s grandson, Sir Nicholas Soames, — one of the ‘biggest political bloodbaths in history’ as The Telegraph put it. John Harris in The Guardian, (9th September) noted, “many Tories seem entirely relaxed about the breakup of the UK, the ultimate sacrifice in their headless pursuit of our divorce from Brussels”. With over 3m EU citizens living in the UK and over 1m British citizens in Europe, many are still very unclear about their future status; many too have commented on the impact of extremism in ‘fanning the flames of hatred’.
