As is Ra's dying and being reborn as an evil demon with super strength. This is a collection of some of Ra's' earliest and iconic stories provided by none other than Neal Adams and Dennis O'Neil. Batman once again teams with the Ghuls but he's definitely uncomfortable with the tactics. Tales of the Demon introduces a great villain and reprints some solid s Batman stories. While the book doesn't feel the type of credits and time markers I like, it does contain an intro by Sam Hamm and an Afterword by Dennis O'Neil. His stories are nice in theory: they're street-level and gritty in contrast to silver age Batman , they take place in exotic locales and they have mystery and thrills, but they fall apart on even the slighte I've never been that crazy about Denny O'Neil. However, the majority of the issues were good and introduced a lot of aspects of these characters that would stick with them for a long time. John Constantine, Hellblazer Vol. Ra's al Ghul has proven through the years to be one of Batman's most formidable adversaries. He, along with his daughter Talia, are showcased in this volume, and we even see appearances from the original Batwoman and the Bronze Tiger. Overall, I think that these do little more than to give background, which I appreciate, but do not love.     Capitalism and Schizophrenia in Gotham City – The Fragile Masculinities of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy by Annette Schimmelpfennig, University of Cologne, Germany Abstract My article examines the various presentations of masculinity in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy and their dependency on gadgets and theatricality. The success of a man’s performance of his masculinity is measured in how convincing he is as either hero or villain and in his exertion of power. I argue thereby that the men appearing in the three installments are stereotypes that cater to a heteronormative world view and constantly need to reassure their sexuality and gender affiliation to persist within the society of Gotham. By contrasting the films’ protagonist Bruce Wayne and his superhero alter ego Batman with the villains, I conclude that the masculinities are fragile because they strongly depend on money, physical strength and control over other, physically and financially weaker people, otherwise they are not of value for the predominant heterocentric, capitalist community. I thus want to stress that the city (and through it the films themselves) requires an immaculate masculinity that is as good as unattainable and promotes obsolete role models. Furthermore, I will point out the subordinate role of femininity in the films which again emphasize the films’ focus on the desire for a hypermasculine saviour. 1 When Batman Begins was released in 2005, critics praised Nolan’s adaptation for its gritty realism and departure from Joel Schumacher’s campy vision of the superhero who was originally created by Bob Kane in 1939 1 .     “It’s a Batman’s World”: Regulations of Gender, Sanity, and Justice in Batman Comics, 1986-2011 Batman, or Bruce Wayne, is a famous DC Comics superhero without superpowers who fights crime at night in the guise of a bat after his parents’ murder. He has starred in dozens of animated and live-action films and TV shows, graced YouTube with a fan-written musical, and been continuously published in comics since his first appearance in 1939. While many readers and viewers can likely re- call iconic moments, such as Batman: The Animated Series’ “I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!”1, it is less likely that they have considered the full weight of those words, and the institutions and infrastructures Batman has enacted and regulates in Gotham City. In this thesis, I examine three modes through which Batman/Bruce Wayne exerts control over Gotham City: first, by performing and enforcing specific standards of masculine and heterosexual gender identity and sexual orientation; second, by hypocritically designing and implementing systems of regulation for the insane; and third, by challenging his system of justice and crime-fighting through the per- son and experiences of Jason Todd. This project is implicitly Foucauldian, and draws heavily from Michel Foucault’s writings in Madness and Civilization and “About the Concept of the ‘Dangerous Individual’ in 19th Century Legal Psychia- try,” as well as existing scholarship on masculinity and superhero comics, specifi- cally those focusing on Batman. 1 Gilroy, Henry, et al.
