THE MENIL COLLECTION CELEBRATES RETURN OF BYZANTINE FRESCOES WITH PUBLIC EVENTS HONORING SACRED WORKS Byzantine Fresco Chapel, Home to the Frescoes, Will Close Sunday, March 4, 2012 Bidding farewell to the frescoes, the Menil presents special programs on consecutive Sundays: a musical tribute on February 12th and a panel discussion February 19th Final Divine Liturgy with His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America: Saturday, March 3, 2012 Houston, TX – January 30, 2012 – The Menil Collection announced that March 4, 2012 will be the final day to see the Byzantine frescoes currently housed on its campus in the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, after which time they will be returned to the Orthodox Church of Cyprus. In celebration of the frescoes, their time in Houston, and the purpose-built Chapel that has been their home for fifteen years; the Menil will present special public events commemorating the return of this sacred art. The works, the largest intact Byzantine frescoes in the Western hemisphere, have been on long-term loan to the Menil from the Orthodox Church of Cyprus following their rescue by the Menil Foundation twenty-eight years ago. They are being returned to Cyprus following the conclusion of the loan agreement between the two parties. At the heart of the Menil’s mission is the belief that art and spirituality are powerful forces in contemporary society and central to a shared human experience—and that institutions have a responsibility to preserve and present objects as stewards, safeguarding their future. “We are honored to have been entrusted as stewards of these extraordinary frescoes and to have exhibited them for the people of Houston and the world in a remarkable building,” said Menil Director Josef Helfenstein. -

The 227-Mile Museum, or, Why We Need a Visitors' Bill of Rights Judy Rand Rand and Associates I'd like to begin by saying "Thank you." Oh, I know, that's backwards. You're supposed to say "thank you" at the end of a speech. At the beginning, you say "I'm happy to be here." But you do deserve thanks, and you should take some credit. You've spent your lives, most of you, listening to visitors. Listening outside the museum walls to learn what visitors really do in our exhibits. And because you do, and you share what you learn, our exhibits have been getting better and better. Ever since I discovered you, and what you do, I've been getting better. I' m not an evaluator myself, but I use evaluation as much as I can. As an exhibit developer, it's my job to imagine the exhibit. "What will visitors do, see, hear, experience in this exhibit? What could they learn? What could they feel? What will they take home with them?" I work with museums to uncover the stories they have to tell, the things they want to show. I find the big idea, a storyline, a clever approach to hold it all together. And then, using what I know about media, and what I know about visitors, I weave it into a rich, relevant visitor experience, ready to draw up and build. With lots of help, of course. And you've helped me more than you know. Visitor studies gave me a place to start. -
An Attention-Value Model of Museum Visitors
Visitor Attention 1 AN ATTENTION-VALUE MODEL OF MUSEUM VISITORS Stephen Bitgood Professor Emeritus of Psychology Jacksonville State University INTRODUCTION In their recently published textbook on cognitive psychology, Ashcraft and Radvansky (2010) described attention as “one of cognitive psychology’s most important topics and one of our oldest puzzles.” Whether we examine human attention in the context of driving an automobile, completing a workplace task, or engaging in educational and recreational activities, the importance of attention processes should not be understated. Talking on a cellular phone or texting while driving an automobile can have a disastrous impact on safe driving. Workplace accidents and errors are often attributed to a lack of focused attention on the task. Failing to pay attention to a lecturer in a school classroom may result in a failing grade. And, in museums, distractions that prevent attending to relevant materials leave the visitor unsatisfied and the goals of the museum unfulfilled. With a few exceptions, the topic of visitor attention has rarely been examined in a comprehensive manner. Emphasis is often placed upon an inferred outcome of attention such as “learning,” “flow,” “restoration,” or “satisfaction” rather than on the processes that make these outcomes possible. Despite the general lack of concern regarding attention in museums, a number of individuals have contributed to our current knowledge, the most prominent of whom include Edward Robinson, Arthur Melton, Harris Shettel, Chan Screven, John Koran, John Falk, Giana Moscardo, and Jay Rounds. The attention-value approach described here is relevant to all of informal science education, although the current paper focuses primarily on exhibition environments. -

ABSTRACT: Science museum staff face a constructivist dilemma as they design their public spaces: the exhibits should facilitate science learning, yet they also need to support a diverse visiting public in making their own personal choices about where to attend, what to do, and how to interpret their interactions. To be effective as teaching tools, exhibits need to be highly intrinsically motivating at every step of an interaction in order to sustain involvement by an audience who views their visit primarily as a leisure activity. Given these challenges, it is vital to support the design process with a strong program of research and evaluation. I give a personal perspective on one institution’s research and evaluation work over the last decade, focusing on four areas: immediate apprehendability, physical interactivity, conceptual coherence, and diversity of learners. Maybe a passionate curiosity for the past and also a vulnerability to poetry … poetry of images revealing the beauty and mystery of the world … W[I] am very moved by … art that … expresses the tragedy of man’s ephemeral condition” (de Menil 1983:50). At the time, Dominique de Menil was working with Renzo Piano on plans for The Menil Collection, the museum that would house the couple’s collection and manifest its poetry (Fig. 1). Thoughtful and meticulous, Dom- inique de Menil labored over every detail of the design and, when construction was complete in 1987, the installation of the collec- tion as well (Fig. 2). Her goals were clear: “I would like my collec- tion to be displayed in such a way that it opens new vistas, that it reveals ‘Terra Incognita’—islands beyond” (ibid.). The Menil Collection, with its 16,000 objects, is but one out- come of this French couple’s vision and philosophy. Intertwining art, social activism, and a profound spirituality, the de Menils left an indelible mark on their adopted city of Houston, both in the campus that houses their museum and related galleries and cha- pels, and in the effect their philanthropic projects had on various institutions in the city. -

While I have certainly encountered art that is touching, disturbing, engulfing, or otherwise impressionable, to have these experiences in front of large abstract paintings by a master of Abstract Expressionism, seems somewhat old fashioned and, well, distressingly earnest. Yet I’d wager my response was completely appropriate, the six paintings I saw were originally created for the Rothko Chapel (http://www.rothkochapel.org/), the ecumenical structure commissioned by Dominique and John de Menil and designed by Philip Johnson. Completed in 1966, Rothko did not include these works in the last selection of 14 paintings that he’d chosen for the chapel prior to his death. The artist killed himself before the building was completed and the works were installed in 1970. The current installation at the Menil was created as a tribute to the Chapel’s 40th anniversary. Each of the over 14-feet-tall canvases features a black rectangle that takes up about two-thirds of the composition and floats on a deep maroon background. At the Menil, they are situated in their own room, which has two parallel entrances to walk through so you see three paintings to your right, each on its own wall, and the same on your left. -

135 Magritte at the Rodeo: René Magritte in the Menil Collection Clare Elliott In the late 1940s, John1 and Dominique (born Schlumberger) de Menil’s attention was drawn to the enigmatic images of familiar objects by the Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte. Over the course of the next forty years, the couple established a critically acclaimed collection of paintings, sculpture, and drawings by Magritte in the United States, which are now housed at the museum that bears their name in their chosen home of Houston, Texas. Multifaceted, experimental collectors with strong philosophical inclinations, the de Menils relished Magritte’s provocations and his continual questioning of bourgeois convention. In 1993, Dominique described the qualities that attracted her and John to Magritte’s work: “He was very serious in dealing with the great pro- blem of who are we? What is the world? What are we doing on earth? What is after life? Visitor Behavior in Zoos: a Review
Visitor behavior in zoos: A review Gareth Davey Psychology and Life Sciences Research Group, University of Bolton, UK, and Psychology Department, University of Chester, Chester, UK. Abstract Visitors are integral components of zoological parks and their importance has led to a research area devoted to understanding the people–zoo relationship. This paper reviews, and provides a point of entry into, the literature relating to visitor research in zoos. The field emerged relatively recently and is diverse and interdis- ciplinary (it shares common ground with sociology, education, psychology, zoolo- gy, and other academic disciplines). Several areas can be identified in the literature (audience analysis, circulation and orientation, exhibit evaluation, and interactions with animals), and these areas have revealed visitors’ demographic and behavioral characteristics, people’s behavioral responses to endogenous and exogenous factors, the impact of exhibit design, and visitors’ movements around zoos. Limitations of existing work include independence between research areas, lack of international studies, limited generalizability of results, and the minority status of the field. Therefore, suggestions for future work include integrating dif- ferent research areas, more research from outside Europe and America, and increased interaction within the visitor research community. TELEPHONE: ClRCLi 5-8700 _ _ J*° ' ^ - _,,_, For Release December % 1959 RECENT ACQUISITIONS AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Fifty-two paintings and sculptures recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art will be on view in a special exhibition in the first floor galleries from December 3 through January 31. The exhibition, which constitutes one of the Museum's periodic reports to the public on works purchased or acquired by gift, was selected and installed by Alfred H. Barr, Jr., Director of Museum Collections. Like most acquisition shows, the exhibition demonstrates again the policies of the Museum Collection in the range and diversity of dates, styles and place of origin of the paintings and sculptures. Work by artists of 12 nationalities dating from the 1890's (2 pieces ) to the 1950 's ( 31 pieces ) are included. Many of the important movements of modern art — impressionism; I'auvtni., futuren, surreal- iftm>ror&l&i o-B vuasiouii Kttfl#j abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction are all represented not by deliberate intention, but in the ordinary course of a year or so's acquisition. Six of the major works shotm now were also included along with some promised gifts in the special exhibition "Toward the New 2-Iuseum of Modern Art" which opened the Museum's 30th Anniversary Fund Raising Drive on November 17. Thei»e are: Claude MOnet's Water. Lilies in triptych form, each section 6 l/2 feet high and Ik feet long (see separate release no.lo^R); Umberto Boccioni's The Laugh, Alberto Giacometti's bronze Dog, Fernand Leger's Umbrella and Bowler, Medardo Rosso's wax over plaster The Bookmaker and Mark Rothko's very large Red, Brown and Black.
