VHS was recorded during a performance in San Francisco, California, USA. However, the tour was global. During this tour Izzard also wrote the book Dress to Kill with David Kwantik (photos of Steve Double), which was published by Virgin Books in solid front in 1998 and in paperback in 2000. Izzard's humor includes observations on the American concept of history, starting with his quote I grew up in Europe, where the story comes from and continuing through the diversions about the belief that all Europeans live in castles (we're just long bungalows or something) and the attitude of Americans to historical landmarks. In addition, Izzard takes time to explain his past as an executive drag queen and how it affected his desire to join the army. This is due to the proposal of the army first battalion transvestite brigade... With fantastic makeup and a fantastic gun. The centerpiece of the play is a retelling of British history from Stonehenge to the Reformation. This is done with Izzard adopting a very Italian accent (and miming riding on Vespa) to label the Pope talking to Henry VIII (who is Sean Connery for this film) and explaining that he cannot marry as many wives as he wants. This comes against the backdrop of Martin Luther pinning his 95 theses on the door of Wittenberg Cathedral, a document that reads Eine Minuten bitte. Ich habe einen kleinen Problemo avec diese Religione. He was from everywhere, explains Izzard to the big cheers from the audience. Like Sean Connery's use of Henry VIII as the voice of Henry VIII, he uses the voice of James Mason as the voice of God. Izzard, a self- proclaimed movie buff, also describes the plot of The Great Escape in a semi-improvisational manner. He especially loves the role of Steve McKuin in the film, and goes to great lengths to explain how inaccurate his escape through Central Europe really is (within fifteen minutes he is on the Swiss border. The diversions are also due to Heimlich's manoeuvre and the American Dream, while the play ends with Izzard telling the story of how he didn't lose his virginity. An then performed by showing Izzard delivering the plot of the film Speed in French and explaining how his schoolboy French, (la souris est sous la table, le chat est sur la chaise, et le singe est sur la branche) serves him in France. One of Izzard's most famous routines was performed during Dress To Kill: a satirical depiction of the fundamentalism of the Church of England, in which Izzard explains how the fundamentalism of the Church of England would be impossible because people would shout: You should have tea and cake with a vicar or you DIE! AND CAKE OR DEATH?! The last phrase has become so well known that it is now the name Eddie Izzard fansite and inspired a Christian site called Anglican memes for those who like gentle pleasure poked into church but are not interested in church bashing or posting anything offensive. Italians’ Perception and Reception of British Stand-Up Comedy Humour with Interlingual Subtitles A Qualitative and Quantitative Study on Eddie Izzard’s Shows Teresa Filizzola Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of PhD University College London Centre for Translation Studies, CMII September 2016 Primary Supervisor: Dr Federico M. Federici Subsidiary Supervisor: Dr Louisa Desilla 1 Declaration I, Teresa Filizzola, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Teresa Filizzola 30th September 2016 2 Abstract If we look at the existing publications addressing topics related to the audiovisual translation mode of subtitling and the rendering of humour into another language, we shall notice that there has been an undeniable growth within these branches of translation studies. Nonetheless, this statement does not apply to the specific field of translation of stand-up comedy humour by means of interlingual subtitles. The literature related to this research field reveals a significant gap especially when the focus is on how audiences respond to this type of translated audiovisual products, and when the source language and the target language are respectively British English and Italian. The present PhD project was designed to fill the aforementioned research gap and, in order to attain this purpose, some sketches selected from three of Eddie Izzard’s stand-up comedy shows (Dress to Kill, Circle and Stripped, for which Italian subtitles are available in the official DVDs) were played to a sample of 103 Italians based in Italy so as to observe their reaction.

The 2016 conference was held in Warsaw at the Polish Academy of Science and was hosted by the Council for the Polish Language. The general theme was Stereotypes and linguistic prejudices in Europe. The General Assembly of EFNIL had selected this topic because of the influence that stereotypes and prejudices have had (and are still having) on the mutual perception of the various peoples and ethnic groups in Europe.

However, each regime has persistently been more focused on the clothed bodies of Iranian women, which has subjected women to extensive regulation and control. In a country where women are currently subjected to the Islamic Regime’s dress codes, the enforcement of Islamic dress has been a crucial part of the regime’s policy towards women.

  • Europeans Among Themselves: Geographical and Linguistic Stereotypes
Virginie Mamadouh Europeans among themselves: Geographical and linguistic stereotypes Abstract (English) Stereotypes can be studied from the perspective of political geography and critical geopoli- tics as part of geographical imaginations, in other words those geopolitical representations that help us make sense of the world around us. They necessarily frame our perception of ongoing events, and inform our behaviour in our attempts to influence them. Europeans produce and reproduce images of each other, regardless of the specific nature of their relationships – violent or peaceful – and political changes. “Othering” is part and parcel of identification processes, and the stereotyping of other Europeans has not disappeared with European integration. This chapter discusses territorial and linguistic stereotypes, i.e. stereotyping based on place and/or language. It will pay specific attention to the use of stereotypes in popular culture, especially the comical use of stereotypes, as humour is a way to question images of the self and the other that are taken for granted, and to foster efforts to overcome group prejudice. Three cultural projects using stereotypes for Euro- pean identity politics are considered in more detail.

  • Whitworth MA Research Report
Master of Arts Research Report Translating Stand Up Comedy: Eddie Izzard’s Dress to Circle Kirsten Whitworth Abstract This research analyses the decisions made in the translation and performance, by Anglophone comedian Eddie Izzard, of a comedy show performed first in two parts in English, in Dress to Kill and Circle, and then translated by the performer and performed in French, as Dress to Circle. The study attempts to answer the questions surrounding the inclusion of certain material, and the resultant differences in the French and English versions, relying primarily on theories of relevance, contextualisation and equivalence. The major theories relied on for this research are frame semantics, relevance theory, and equivalence theories. The research takes the form of a case study of three particular texts and the relationships between them, adopting a descriptive rather than a prescriptive approach. Certain prescriptive categories (such as those expressed by Nida) are nonetheless used as descriptive labels for the kind of equivalence that does exist. The texts are analysed both as written texts and texts in performance, with attention paid to the delivery of the texts, and their reception. Given that the source and target texts are markedly different in terms of content, the texts are analysed in the light of their intention to provide humour and generate a positive response in the audience, taking into account the factors involved in live performance. i Declaration I declare that this Research Project is my own unaided work. It is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Translation.
