Little's untimely death, and still yet extensive recording career,1 presents yet another example of early passing among innovative and influential trumpeters. Like Clifford Brown before him, Theodore “Fats” Navarro before him, Little's death left a gap the in jazz world as both a sophisticated technician and an inspiring composer. He directly contributed to the evolution of bebop, as well as influenced the development of free jazz, and the contributed additions to the standard jazz repertoire. Monk branched out fiom his influences, including swing, gospel, blues, and classical to create a unique style of composition and performance. Monk more than any other major figure in bebop, was, and remains, an original1 Monk's life can be categorized into three periods: the early, the middle, and late period. Each period lasts roughly twenty years: from 1917- 1940,1940-1960, and from 1960-1982. In Monk's early period he toured the US playing gospel music, and found early influences in swing music like Duke Ellington. It wasn't until his middle period that Monk began to record and write his compositions, and in his late period he toured the world with other renowned musicians playing bebop. Thelonious was the middle child, with an older sister, Marion born in 1915, and younger brother, Thomas born in 1919. Monk's birth certificate lists his father as an ice puller, and his mother as a household worker. Although both of his parents could read and write, they struggled to make enough to live on. In 1922 Thelonious' mother insisted that she take the family to New York to make a better living.

The starting point is the new Afro-American conception M-Base . The protagonists of this movement are Cassandra Wilson (vocals), Geri Allen (piano), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Greg Osby and Gary Thomas (sax ophones). In antithesis to this artistic movement Winter do cu ments the development of the young jazz avant- garde and produces path-breaking recordings with Tim Berne (saxophone), Hank Roberts (cello), Django Bates (piano), Joey Baron (drums), Marc Ducret (guitar) and the ensemble Miniature . After 1995 his working method changes fundamentally from a documentarist to a sound director. This is the actual beginning of WINTER&WINTER. Together with Mariko Takahashi he dares to implement a new label concept. At the end of the 80s, Stefan Winter and Mariko Takahashi meet in Japan. Under the direction of Mariko Takahashi the festival »Taboo-Lu« is initiated in Ginza in Tokyo (Japan), a notable presentation with live concerts, an art exhibition and recordings. With »Taboo-Lu« the idea of and for WINTER&WINTER is quasi anticipated: Border crossing becomes a programme. Art and music cooperate together, contemporary meets tradition, composition improvisation. Mariko Takahashi and Stefan Winter want to open the way with unconventional recordings and works for fantastic and new experiences. Stefan Winter has the vision to produce classical masterpieces in radical new interpretations.
