Myers VOLUME II A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Loyola University of Chicago in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 1992 CHAPTER V NATURAL HISTORY AND THE STATE OF NATURE In the second section of chapter III above, we re ferred to Locke's apparent relegation of morality to the periphery of his concern in writing the Essay. Locke seems in effect to promise that however novel in other respects may be his empiricist account of natural science, that account leaves relatively inviolate the province of moral ity; he declares in closing that the study of nature is "wholly separate and distinct" (4.21.5) from the science of ethics or morality. We have noted too that Locke's asser tions of the possibility of a demonstrative, mixed-mode science of morality appear to entail an insistence on precisely such a strict separation of the respective sciences of morality and nature.1 In fact, however, there are significant ambiguities in Locke's presentation of this proposal.

  • Nazareth Biography You Couldn’T Invent the Story of Nazareth If You Tried
Nazareth Biography You couldn’t invent the story of Nazareth if you tried. At their peak, the Dunfermline rock group were huge, selling vast quantities of albums and pulling in enormous crowds to their shows. By rights, when the group’s profile receded a little and they morphed into the highly respected club-level regulars that they are today, their reputation should have become tarnished – but nothing of the sort has occurred. Nazareth are routinely hailed as that rare thing: pioneers who became legends in their own lifetimes. Like all the best bands, Nazareth came from humble roots. Playing Scottish clubs in their original incarnation as The Shadettes in the late 1960s, the group – singer Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew and drummer Darrell Sweet – were obliged to perform tongue-in-cheek cover versions of pop hits if they wanted to get paid after the gig. This state of affairs didn’t suit Nazareth and, with a drive that has always typified their career, the band quit their day jobs in 1971 and moved to a grotty communal flat in London. Changing their name and acquiring a manager, bingo millionaire Bill Fehilly, Nazareth signed to the Pegasus label and their fortunes began to change. Reviewing an early Nazareth album, Melody Maker’s Chris Charlesworth wrote: “Perhaps more groups should realise that someone else’s song well played is often a more uplifting experience than an original that’s mediocre.” In doing so Charlesworth identified one of the group’s key skills: the ability to take a song and put an exciting spin on it that attracted public attention.

  • Final Version. ECSA Letter
3 July 2018 European Parliament’s vote on the Copyright Directive: “Where there is no law, there is no freedom” 1. Make the right choice for Europe. Dear Member of the European Parliament, You will receive this letter only once, but I very much hope that hearing the facts once from us and from an organisation representing over 50,000 professional composers and songwriters in 27 European countries will be more powerful than a million automated messages spreading disinformation. You have probably already received thousands of these automatically generated messages saying that the Copyright Directive will “break the Internet” or “lead to censorship”. It is simply a lie that serves the interests of a few multinational tech companies that fiercely fight any regulation that could hurt their business models. Answer those emails and you will see most of them are pure spam generated by computers. Those tech companies have immense resources, in large part because they don’t pay fair taxes across Europe. Those resources allow them to finance foundations, coalitions, websites and massive mailing lists. They have no problems when it comes to filtering the Internet in countries that are notoriously known for censorship. That does not prevent them to shamelessly use the argument of freedom of expression with one single goal in mind: avoiding regulation at all cost. This Directive is NOT about censoring the Internet: the position of the Legal Affairs committee actually promotes a fair remuneration for creators online. As authors, freedom of expression is at the very basis of our work, it is in our DNA: we would not support any law that would limit it in any way.

  • Oink, Mnemotechnics and the Private Bittorrent Architecture
Digital desire and recorded music: OiNK, mnemotechnics and the private BitTorrent architecture Andrew Sockanathan PhD Thesis Goldsmiths College Centre for Cultural Studies 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own ___________________ Andrew Sockanathan 2 Abstract This thesis centres on the P2P internet protocol BitTorrent, music filesharing, and nascent forms of collective action developing through private BitTorrent communities. The focus is on one of these communities, a music filesharing website called ‘OiNK’. Founded in 2005, it was the first of its kind to garner membership in the hundreds of thousands, was emblematic of user-led movements to improve the quality, efficiency and availability of digital media online, and was very publically shut down in 2007. Making critical use of Simondon’s notion of ‘individuation’, two interrelated techno- historical impulses are identified as central to the ‘in-formation’ of both BitTorrent and OiNK. Firstly, through research into the development of the global music industry’s ‘productive circuit’ of manufacturing, distribution, retail and radio, it is shown how consumers were gradually excluded from having a say in how, what and where they could consume. Secondly, a history of ‘OiNK-style’ filesharing is gleaned, not from P2P, but from research into small, decentralised ‘online’ communities that emerged throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, where enthusiasts learned how to use software and hardware to manage the storage, reproduction, uploading and sharing of information. This thesis shows how BitTorrent exposed these previously exclusive practices to masses of consumers who were dissatisfied with both retail/broadcasting and public P2P, through the new possibility of private BitTorrent communities.
