Pictured above is John Bowers, a resident of Traphill who came by the offices of The Record some days ago. He came looking for information which we didn't actually have readily available, but ended up sharing some pretty cool stuff with us on his own. As we were visiting with him, he noticed the 1953 Traphill High School letter jacket we have on display. The jacket belonged to Dr. Charles Gilreath who operates Gilreath Chiropractic Health Center in Elkin. Gilreath is an amazing source of Wilkes County history and genealogy, and he gave us the jacket to add to our collection of Wilkes County history. When Bowers spotted the large embroidered Tiger on the jacket, he immediately pointed out a patch which was on the coat he was wearing. He went on to say he got the Tank Destroyer Forces patch from Traphill WWII Veteran Ruffin Kennedy, and that its tiger was adapted by the school for their Traphill Tigers mascot. Note on the inset the tank tracks in the jaws of the tiger.
