RIDE MANUAL

Thank you for entering the Classic Sportive which is scheduled to take place on Sunday 20th June 2021. Due to COVID-19 safety measures, the format of this year’s Dartmoor Classic will be completely different from all previous years. Mid- Cycling Club has been granted ‘Test Case Status’ by British Cycling, enabling us to proceed with three times the number of participants that is currently being sanctioned for other Sportive events. It is therefore vital that you take time to read this document before you travel to ensure you fully understand the format of the event and the terms and conditions under which you agree to participate. There is always an element of risk when participating in cycling events. This document provides the necessary information to minimise those risks and ensure you get the most out of your time with us. PREPARATION: The Dartmoor Classic is an endurance-based cycling challenge. You should have been training to ensure you have the appropriate level of fitness to complete your chosen route. At this stage you should be confident you can complete the distance in the time available. Check your bike is roadworthy and in good mechanical condition. We recommend you have it serviced by a reputable Bicycle Mechanic. Tri Bars & Aero Bars are NOT permitted - They are not suitable or safe for group riding. Please remove them before attending or use a different bike. The routes have been changed for 2021. The new routes can be viewed on our website. If you ride on ‘auto-pilot’ and do not pay attention to the route signs you will likely end up off course. In the 48 hours prior to the event, you should get prepared so that you arrive refreshed and relaxed. • Eat high carbohydrate meals (Pasta, Rice, Potatoes etc.) • Drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol to ensure good hydration levels. • Make sure you get quality rest and sleep. • Pack your kit and plan your travel o COVID Face covering for use as required. o Check the weather forecast when deciding what clothing to pack / wear o Cycle helmets are compulsory - No Helmet = No Ride! o Remember to bring 2 x large water bottles o Don't forget your cycling shoes! o Bring lights in case of mist or poor visibility on Dartmoor. o Cycle Repair Kit (with 2 x inner tubes, pump, 2 x tyre levers, and a multi-tool) o Drink & Energy Snacks to sustain you from the start to the first Feed Station. • Allow plenty of time for travel - Do not end up stressed with a last minute rush • Plan to have a good breakfast at least 1 hour before you start your ride. COVID-19 TESTING: Everyone is required to self-test for COVID-19 prior to attending this year’s Dartmoor Classic. You should complete the test the day before departure. Lateral Flow Test Kits can be obtained free of charge through the NHS online or from your doctor or local pharmacy. You are still required to complete this test, even if you are double vaccinated. The self-testing takes approximately 15 minutes, and the results take a further 30 minutes. If you test positive, or have any COVID-19 symptoms, please do not attend the event. Submit your results to NHS Track & Trace and bring the confirmation text / email as confirmation.

STARTING PROCEDURE: Please see diagram below: You should arrive ready and prepared for your ride. On arrival, make your way to the ‘Start-Lane’. If riding with friends or family, pre-arrange a meet point and then present yourselves together at the start-lane. DO NOT wander up and down in the start-lane looking for your mates! It is important that we all maintain social distancing. The start-lane will be set out so that everyone can queue in pairs whilst maintaining the 1 metre plus (1m+) rule. Start Times: We want to get the Grande riders started first because they have the furthest to cycle. The Medio riders will start second and the Piccolo riders last. This ensures everyone has ample time to complete the course. The first riders will set off at 06:00 hrs. o GRANDE riders can join the start-lane from 05:30 hrs o MEDIO riders can join the start-lane from 06:30 hrs o PICCOLO riders can join the start-lane from 08:00 hrs.

ALL riders MUST start before 09:30 hrs (unless delayed by the organisers for safety reasons) • Each group will receive a rider safety briefing. • You will depart under motorcycle escort. • You MUST remain behind the lead vehicle until you reach the Clay Pits Way roundabout. • Your official medal time will not start until you pass the timing point at this location. • Once you have passed the Timing Point the clock continues ticking until you return. • The Start / Finish location will be clearly marked by Twin Towers & Flags. At the start-lane, participants will be divided into groups of 50. Each group will be assigned a Ride Ambassador who will lead them out from the racecourse to the remote start-towers located on Claypits Way. This segment of the route is neutralised (not timed). You MUST NOT overtake the Ride Ambassador. You must ride as a group until you reach the Start-tower. This is a distance of approximately 2.3 miles. From here you will be able to ride at your own pace.

The chips have a special glue that will not cause any damage to your helmet. They can easily be peeled off and thrown away after you finish. Correct placement of the chip is essential to determine your official finish time. Your Electronic Chip will automatically record the time that you pass through each of the Control Points on the course. These will be set up at the following locations: Grande: • Clay Pits Way - (Official medal time starts here) • Feed Station • Lydford Village Hall • Princetown Feed Station • Clay Pits Way - Kingsteignton (Official medal time ends here) Riders who do not register at the Lydford Control Point will default to the Medio Route.
