  • Session 05 SF in China Vatilo
Worldcon 75 Academic Track Session 5: SF in China Thursday 10:00-11:30 Room 209 Chair: Essi Vatilo Abstract 1: Mingwei Song (Wellesley College, USA): How Scientific Romance and Its Implied Epistemology Became Chinese? Notes on Science, Science Fiction, and Realism in China, 1890s-1920s [email protected] This paper focuses on the late Qing translations of Western science fiction and their impact on the rise of the Chinese equivalent to the genre, and later the rise of Chinese realism. The paradigm shifts in epistemology, which signaled a pervasive change of Chinese sciences and technologies from the traditional to a modern system, paralleled the sinicization of science fiction. The paper studies some key images and concepts that became popular among the Chinese readers through translations of Verne, Wells, and less-known authors such as Louise J. Strong, including “scientific novum” such as submarine and microscope, “scientific institutions” such as modern museums and communities of scientists, “scientific adventures” such as extraterrestrial expeditions and colonization of other worlds, as well as “scientific ideas” such as evolutionism and utopia. What is uniquely interesting about the early translations of science fiction lies in its intentional Confucianization of both the ideological and materialistic aspects of the imaginary new worlds, which inspired Chinese authors to produce more audacious versions of the Confucian utopias. Translation enabled scientific romance and its implied epistemological change to become Chinese, or at

  • Science Fiction Literature in China
Reynolds 1 THE ELECTRIC ERA: SCIENCE FICTION LITERATURE IN CHINA By Hannah C. Reynolds In partial fulfillment of the degree Bachelor of Arts with Honors in East Asian Studies Wittenberg University 1 May 2019 Reynolds 2 I. Introduction China is no stranger to writing, consuming, and cherishing highly imaginative works of literature, whether it be in the ancient dynastic ages or in modern Chinese libraries. The fantastical adventures of The Monkey King are loved by the entire nation, and mystical romances of A Dream of Red Mansions are being adapted into screenplays more than 200 years after the tale’s conception. Confucian values, while traditionally associated with their realistic and grounded nature, may have boosted China’s cultural fascination with the intangible oddities of life. Many of Confucius’ analects call for people to be realistic and focused on understanding the here and the now: “When you do not yet understand life, how could you understand death?” (Weizhi sheng, yanzhi si 未知生, 焉知死).1 But an important element of Confucian philosophy is the emphasis put on the connection between societal structures and the cosmic order of the universe; the connections between parent and child, husband and wife, and ruler and subject are not upheld merely for convenience—they keep the yin and yang of the universe in balance. Disruption of social order would be, in the eyes of Confucius, a blatant opposition of the higher cosmic order that is intrinsically connected to our mortal existence. Elements of fantasy are also more intertwined in modern, everyday Chinese life than in the lives of Westerners.

Chinese Science Fiction Literature Can it do for China what K-Pop and Manga do for Korea and Japan? NICKLAS JUNKER There has been little success with exporting Chinese culture abroad, despite considerable eff orts made by the Chinese government. Chinese science fiction (sci-fi) has attracted increasing global attention and may be an important cultural tool to express a Chinese narrative abroad. Previous research has focused on Chinese sci-fi as a national literary product to be consumed within Chinese borders, ASIA IN FOCUS but little has been written on Chinese sci-fi as a transnational product to be consumed globally. In this paper I examine the role of Chinese sci-fi literature as a transnational cultural tool from a bottom-up perspective. I attempt to understand the current role and function of Chinese sci-fi in the Sinosphere by looking into cultural flows within the sci-fi community and examining the routes of this transnational and transcultural voyage. The findings show that Chinese sci-fi is becoming globalised reaching consumers all over the world yet still maintaining its regional context. Thus, this paper contributes to an enhanced understanding of how Chinese sci-fi literature can create a positive and powerful image of China from the bottom-up. Keywords: Chinese science fiction literature, cultural flows, scapes, transnational movement, Ken Liu 24 o date, China’s cultural narrative abroad has to diff erent political movements and the state Tbeen portrayed from a top-down perspective, sponsored visions of China since the late Qing era often dictated by the Chinese government, in the early twentieth century to the present day.

1 Nanyang Technological University HH4020: Science, Technology, and Science Fiction Semester 2, AY2016-17 ** Final Version ** Academic Units: 4 Pre-requisites: None Instructor: A/Prof. Hallam Stevens Email: [email protected] Office: HSS-05-07 Overview Science fiction has had a profound influence on recent developments in science and technology. Fields such as virtual reality, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and the development of Internet and communications technologies have been inspired and transformed by our cultural imaginaries. Our fears, hopes, and understandings of these domains are written into texts. Through reading science fiction, role-playing games, hypertext fiction, and MMORPGs, this class will explore the interfaces between science, technology, and fiction, examining how these imaginaries affect science and technology and how science and technologies affect these imaginaries. Through such analysis we will arrive at a deeper understanding of how our culture comes to terms with the dangers, threats, and complexities of contemporary technologies. Logistics: This is a seminar class. Seminars will meet on Wednesdays between 1.30pm and 5.30pm in TR+109. We will usually spend some portion of class time watching science fiction films. Learning Objectives In this course students will learn: • How to read and deploy non-traditional & cultural sources in historical studies (eg. science fiction, games, video games); • How to write creative fiction based on historical research and sources; • How to conduct independent research in cultural history; • How to construct a historical argument and write a historical essay based on cultural sources; Some important things to know for this module: Readings 2 All the readings for the class will be placed online on Blackboard/Edventure, with the exception of the novels which you should purchase either in hard or soft copy (ie.

  • Epidemic in the Eyes of “Three Generals of Chinese Sci-Fi” – Wang Jingkang, Liu Cixin and Han Song*
No. 6 July 2020 王晋康、刘慈欣、韩松 | “天王级”科幻作家眼中的瘟疫 Epidemic in the Eyes of “Three Generals of Chinese Sci-fi” – Wang Jingkang, Liu Cixin and Han Song* Written and Translated by Shanky Chandra Harvard-Yenching Fellow, PhD scholar, Centre for Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies, JNU, New Delhi Summary According to an online conspiracy theory, the American author Dean Koontz predicted the coronavirus outbreak in 1981. His novel ‘The Eyes of Darkness’ referred to a deadly virus called "Wuhan-400" - strangely predicting the Chinese city where the Covid-19 would emerge. But the similarities end there: Wuhan-400 is described as having a "death rate" of 100%, developed in laboratories outside the city as the "perfect" biological weapon. Science fiction writers, however, have made a point of doing just that. With the devastating effect of the epidemic and a worldwide rise in state-sanctioned authoritarianism, science fiction has been approaching reality at an alarming rate in recent years. But how do Chinese science fiction writers, who have spent much of their lives writing imagining dystopia, react to ultimately live in one? How does reality match fiction? This translation is based on questions asked to the "three kings" of Chinese science fiction, Wang Jiankang, Han Song and Liu Cixin, who are the best practitioners of the genre, to tell us about their experience of the epidemic in China. Translator’s Note: The Chinese article was originally published as an interview at China Science Writer Association. Later, it was published by the Shanghai Pudong Science Fiction Association and Science Fiction World Magazine, respectively.

  • Cultural Exceptionalism in the New Generation of Chinese Science Fiction
SYMPOSIUM: SINOFUTURISMS Cultural Exceptionalism in the New Generation of Chinese Science Fiction Yuan Liu Science fiction is a kind of literary work that is rooted in reality and combined with the most advanced technology and cultural frontiers in order to carry forward the spirit of science and rationalism. The core of contemporary Chinese science fiction is the transmission of cultural exceptionalism with close relation to real life, including mutual benefits with the development of science and technology and direct connections with the future world. The following passage will give an analysis of the cultural exceptionalism depicted in science fiction written by the new generation of Chinese writers from the aspects of content, strategy, and significance. The development of new technology plays a certain role in promoting the development of cultural exceptionalism, and sometimes it can even become the carrier of culture. However, they are not the same thing. Focusing on the development of high technology, science fiction may contain some surreal descriptions of the science and technology frontier. However, this kind of surrealism coming from a reasonable deduction of uncertainty must be based on the current facts. Even if the background is fictional, the “future science and technology” described in the science fiction should not be inconsistent with the known ones. Liu Yang’s short stories can be good examples of writings thematically predicated on the frontier of science and technology. For instance, The Pythagorean Theorem(《勾股》,2010) discusses the constants of nature; Pathlight (《单孔衍射》,2010) discusses the wave-particle duality of time; Troglodyte (《穴居者》,2017) shows the entropy conservation and the picture of the universe.
