OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY befragt worden. Dazu kamen noch Besprechungen in so prestige- und einflußreichen Blättern wie The New York Review of 3 Books, The London Review of Books und The Times Literary Supplement.

TEMENOS ACADEMY ONLINE PAPERS MICHAELMAS TERM 2020 7 A Secret Philosophy: W. B. Yeats and the Dublin Hermetic Society by Professor Grevel Lindop [Image: William Butler Yeats, by John Butler Yeats, 1900] 1 A SECRET PHILOSOPHY: W.B. YEATS AND THE DUBLIN HERMETIC SOCIETY (i) On June 16th 1885 a group of young men met in a modest upper room in York Street, near the centre of Dublin. They would call themselves the Dublin Hermetic Society, and they intended to explore ‘a philosophy which has until lately been kept entirely secret, or at most revealed only in symbolism’.1 The group had been called together by the young poet William Butler Yeats and his friend Charles Johnston. It was Yeats who gave the opening address. This was an important time in his life: three days earlier, he had celebrated his twentieth birthday; and his first published poems had appeared in the Dublin University Review just three months before that. We don’t know exactly what he said in those inaugural remarks, but later he recalled: I had, when we first made our Society, proposed for our consideration that whatever the great poets had affirmed in their finest moments was the nearest we could come to an authoritative religion, and that their mythology, their spirits of water and wind, were but literal truth.2 So poetry was involved from the start, with Yeats convinced (like Blake before him) that poets are the true prophets. He was also proposing the ‘literal’ (not merely metaphorical) existence of elemental spirits – that there are modes of existence, and living beings, inaccessible to our ordinary senses.

THEOSOPHY AND THE ORIGINS OF THE INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS By Mark Bevir Department of Political Science University of California, Berkeley Berkeley CA 94720 USA [E-mail: [email protected]] ABSTRACT A study of the role of theosophy in the formation of the Indian National Congress enhances our understanding of the relationship between neo-Hinduism and political nationalism. Theosophy, and neo-Hinduism more generally, provided western-educated Hindus with a discourse within which to develop their political aspirations in a way that met western notions of legitimacy. It gave them confidence in themselves, experience of organisation, and clear intellectual commitments, and it brought them together with liberal Britons within an all-India framework. It provided the background against which A. O. Hume worked with younger nationalists to found the Congress. KEYWORDS: Blavatsky, Hinduism, A. O. • Automatic Writing and the Book of Mormon: an Update
ARTICLES AND ESSAYS AUTOMATIC WRITING AND THE BOOK OF MORMON: AN UPDATE Brian C. Hales At a Church conference in 1831, Hyrum Smith invited his brother to explain how the Book of Mormon originated. Joseph declined, saying: “It was not intended to tell the world all the particulars of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon.”1 His pat answer—which he repeated on several occasions—was simply that it came “by the gift and power of God.”2 Attributing the Book of Mormon’s origin to supernatural forces has worked well for Joseph Smith’s believers, then as well as now, but not so well for critics who seem certain natural abilities were responsible. For over 180 years, several secular theories have been advanced as explanations.3 The more popular hypotheses include plagiarism (of the Solomon Spaulding manuscript),4 collaboration (with Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Rigdon, etc.),5 1. Wissenschaftliche Dienste Aktueller Begriff Vor 100 Jahren: Der Mord an Matthias Erzberger Am 26.

The proletariat have swarmed out, waving the red banners of Communism; private armies of unemployed, disaffected veterans - Freikorps- roam the streets thrashing the Communists. The Weimar Republic ts estaablished under the protection of the Freikorps. An explosion of radical music, theater, and art manifests the seething rancor and nervous energy of the people. The most insane, paralyzing inflation the world has known makes life a misery for the hungry, desperate populace . Although the flower of their kind lie buried in Flanders fields, a few aristocratic families preserve their privileged, even exquisite lives: boating parties at summer palaces, chamber music in great townhouses on Sunday afternoons. This is the rich backdrop of "A Princess in Berlin", a social novel in the grand tradition of e.g. Theodor Fontane in the Germany of the 19th century.

  • The Idea of Empire
The Idea of Empire by Alain de Benoist Europe was the place where two great models of polity, of political unity, were elaborated, developed and clashed: the nation, preceded by the monarchy, and the empire. The last emperor of the Latin West, Romulus Augustus, was deposed in 475. Only the Eastern empire remained. But alter the Western empire was dismantled, a new unitary consciousness seems to have arisen. In 795, Pope Leon III started to date his encyclicals based on the reign of Charles, king of the Franks and patrician of the Romans, rather than on the reign of the emperor of Constantinople. Five years later in Rome, on Christmas Day in the year 800, Leon III placed the imperial crown on Charlemagne‘s head. This is the first renovation of the empire. It obeys the theory of transfer (transratio imperii) according to which the empire Charlemagne revived is a continuation of the Roman empire, thus putting an end to theological speculations inspired by the prophet David who foresaw the end of the world alter the end of the fourth empire, i.e., alter the end of the Roman empire which succeeded the Babylonian, the Persian and the Alexandrian empires. At the same time, the renovation of the empire also breaks with the Augustinian idea of a radical opposition between civitas terrena and civitas Dei, which could have been understood to mean that a Christian empire was only a chimera. In fact, Leon III had a new strategy — a Christian empire, where the emperor would be the defender of the City of God.

  • Symbolic Images of the Bible Exlained in the New
SYMBOLIC IMAGES OF THE BIBLE EXLAINED IN THE NEW REVELATION THROUGH JAKOB LORBER AND GOTTFRIED MAYERHOFER (ref: www.the-new-revelation.weebly.com , www.hisnewword.org ) The facts that the known Scriptures and especially The Old Testament are spiritually encoded, that people need divine revelation to understand them, that such revelation happened when the Lord Himself explained them to His disciples and that there will come a time when He will bring His wisdom to the people in plain language are all clearly pointed in both the Old and the New Testament. We thus invite you to investigate some Bible verses pointing to the following: GOD'S MYSTERIOUS WISDOM IS TO BE REVEALED BY HIS SPIRIT. MEN KNOW NOTHING FROM THEMSELVES. THE OLD TESTAMENT IS VEILED. THE LORD OPENED IT FOR HIS DISCIPLES. PLAIN LANGUAGE PROMISED BY THE LORD IN BOTH THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT i (please press the roman letter at the end of the previous paragraph to see the relevant Bible verses and same to come back to the beginning/ titles list) * The previous references being noted, we will add here a collection of explanations of the spiritually encoded prophetic language of the Bible as they can be found in the New Revelation. However, please consider that this is far from being exhaustive and also that the meanings of God’s eternal and infinite words are not to be seen as restricted to just these short explanations that are given as basic instruction for Lord’s people. It is definitely, of great importance to study the Scripture in the light of these disclosures and observe how much, as a result of that, the understanding of the messages of the old prophets and Revelation increases as also the consistency between them and the teachings of Jesus; this is indeed a most compelling demonstration that God (and the God of the entire Bible) is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb 13:8) and that the spirit of prophecy is nothing else but a testimony of the Jesus (Rev 19:10).

Painting the Masters The Mystery of Hermann Schmiechen Massimo Introvigne (UPS, Torino, Italy) Besançon’s Forbidden Image One of the first books where sociology of religion met history of art was L’image interdite. Une histoire intellectuelle de l’iconoclasme, published by French social historian Alain Besançon in 1994 Iconoclasm vs Iconodulism The controversial book argued that Western art history is defined by opposition between iconoclasm (i.e the idea that the sacred should not be represented visually) and iconodulism (i.e support for sacred images) Although the terminology dates back to the Byzantine iconoclastic riots of the 8th century (right), modern Western iconoclasm originated with John Calvin (1509-1564) and became culturally dominant after the Enlightenment Iconoclasm: not against art, but against an art representing God or divine spirits Besançon’s definition of iconoclasm is not identical with some dictionary definitions of the same word. For him, iconoclasm is not against art and may even promote it. It only excludes from the field of art the representation of God and divine spirits or beings Image of Byzantine Emperor Leo III (685-741) on a coin: Leo, a leading iconoclast, was obviously not against representing himself Abstract Art as Iconoclasm Besançon* also argued that: 1. Iconoclasm is a distinctive trait of modernity, and abstract art is its most mature fruit 2. Symbolism, at first sight anti-iconoclastic, by substituting the Christian foundations of sacred art with a very different esoteric spirituality, in fact prepared the way for abstract iconoclasm 3. Several abstract painters, including Piet Mondrian (1872- 1944) passed at one stage through symbolism (Evolution, 1910-1911, left) * … with whom I do not necessarily agree Besançon and Theosophy Besançon claimed to be among the first social historians to devote serious attentions to Madame Blavatsky (1831-1891) and other Theosophical classics.
