It was Thursday night, clear and bright. Antelope Valley was putting on its annual fair with all the festivities that go along with a fair. This night there was a figure eight race scheduled. All the necessary parties were there: fire department, police, ambulance and the High Desert Four Wheelers. We were doing another com- munity service event. If the senator could take care of their little criminal prob- lem, they would agree to sell him their claim. Jones, along with his colleague Senator William M. Stewart, also of Nevada, soon arranged to grant amnesty for the bandit mine owners, but only after making sure that the stolen $ 12,000 was repaid from their profits. Senators Jones and Stewart, known as the Silver Senators for their wide range of mining investments, soon orga- nized the Panamint Mining Company with a capital stock of two million dollars. With word out about the sliver found in the area, hundreds of prospectors flooded the region and the Panamint Mining District was formed in February 1873. Arriving with wagonloads of tools and pro- visions, prospectors soon found several lodes including the Wide West, Gold Hill, Wonder, Wyoming, Pine Tree and dozens of others. With the influx of all the miners, the settlement of Panamint City was soon founded and before long it sport- ed a number of saloons, stores, and a red-light district, all built along the uppermost end of Surprise Canyon. Optimism regarding the new community was running high and in August 1873, an area newspaper quoted a resi- dent as saying: “Panamint prospects are improving daily. I think we have in this camp the most intelligent and liber- ally inclined miners that perhaps ever got together.” While the residents’ positive outlook may have been reflected by some in the camp, Panamint City was seen by most as rough and lawless place, with over fifty shootings occurring during its short life. By 1874 the town boasted a population of about 2,000 people and its one and half mile-long rutted and muddy main street was lined with about 50 buildings, which included a dozen saloons, the Bank of Panamint, a Sign Up Today brewery, a hotel, the post office , and the offices of the 4WD.com/jeep-parts/off-road-jeep-clubs Panamint News, which printed its first issue in November. The town consisted of about 200 houses, many of which were no more than log and rock huts. Others made (800) 913-8860 their homes in simple tents. The local butcher shop’s

MARY KRUPKA PHOTOS BY LINDA ADKINS PHOTOGRAPHY

What do “Honoring Our Troops”, “Chicks on the Rocks” and “4x4 in Motion” have in common? The Niagara Rim Poker Run! If you missed the July 15th event hosted by 4x4 in Motion, you missed one heck of a celebration. Let’s start off with the poker run theme of “Honoring Our Troops.” We were excited to celebrate all branches of our armed forces by having people wear red, white and blue or clothing represent- ing a branch for which they or a family member served. Little did they know, there was another surprise in store for all the veterans in attendance. Before the regular raffle, we had a spe- cial raffle for all who served in the armed forces. No purchase necessary, all the vets had to do was come up and say their name, rank and branch. It was interesting hearing these people talk and then when asked their name, rank and branch, their tone changed. It was an awesome thing to see/hear the pride from each and every vet as they stated their information.

So what were the surprise raffle prizes? • Warn 8274M Winch ($1899.99) • Red 15lb Package A Power Tank ($500) • Blue 15lb Package A Power Tank ($500) • 20 Power Tank Tire repair Kits ($40 each)

What? Did I just say a Warn 8274M Winch and two Power Tanks? Yes, I did! How did 4x4 in Motion pull this off? We didn’t, but some very special people did and this is how. 4x4 in Motion members, Sam and Sheryl Burgess had an idea to have a

Last week, on July 27, there were numerous celebrations around the coun- try, and in Mammoth, regarding our public lands. The primary participants were the non-motorized groups and they did a big “march” in Salt Lake City. At our club meeting in July, we decided to make our presence known and claim that it is “OUR” land also. Thank you to Pat Woods, Raul Hidalgo and Sherrie for putting together the booth in Mammoth and representing our Club. 30 IN GEAR October / November 2017 cal4wheel.com IN GEAR October / November 2017 cal4wheel.com 31 What is steampunk? ANDREW CUNNINGHAM CONVENTION 2018 CHAIR In this article, I want to talk a little bit about the theme for Convention 2018: Steampunk It – The Outrageous Ride. Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incor- porates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Although its literary origins are sometimes associ- ated with the cyberpunk genre, steampunk works are often set in an alter- native history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era or American “Wild West,” in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. Therefore, steampunk may be described as neo-Victorian. Steampunk’s most recognizable features include anachronistic technolo- gies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era’s perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne. Other examples of steampunk contain alternative-history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analogue computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine. Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a MORE INFO pseudo-Victorian mechanical “steampunk” style, and a number of visual and ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ musical artists have been described as steampunk. It is August 11th and my family just returned from a much needed vacation at our favorite camping spot, Dinkey Creek, near Shaver Lake in the Sierra National Forest, east of Fresno.
