Hypothetical scenario: You and your family live in a rather small town. Your father is a very well- known, respected and upstanding man in your town. Your father owns a few small businesses and is also one of the voters approved elected Judges of the town in the court system. Your mother is also well known and respected. One day your two brothers approach you and say, “Hey, get in the back seat of the car and take a road trip with us.” You have no reason not to trust your two brothers, so it is an easy decision to get in the back seat of the car and go on the road trip with them. You think it might be a surprise and hopefully is going to be a fun trip with your two brothers. Your brothers withhold the destination from you, they do not tell you where they are taking you, they do not give you one single clue about the trip. Maybe they just tell you, “It is all going to be a surprise!” The ride is lasting for quite a while, you are now in a town a few hours away and they stop at a gas station. Your two brothers say to you, “Stay in the car. Do not get out of the car. We are going to get some snacks for the rest of the trip.” They both get out of the car and go into the gas station store. While you are waiting in the back seat of the car, you suddenly hear a few gun shots coming from inside the store, and soon after your two brothers arrive back to the car and start speeding away from the scene. Your brothers begin boasting about what they just did, saying, “Yeah, we just robbed that gas station, stole about $1,000 dollars from the safe, and we had to kill the clerk because he tried to pull out a gun from under the counter, so we had to protect ourselves!” You are in shock, asking them, “What did you do? Why did you do that?” Your two brothers give you no explanation and say, “Keep quiet about this and do not tell anyone. Forget this ever happened.” The entire ride home you are silent. The entire ride home you are in shock. Upon arriving home, you go in your house, still silent and in shock. You wish you had decided not to go with them that day. So, a few days later, it is dinner time at your house. All five of you, father, mother, your two brothers, and you, are sitting down at the dinner table eating dinner; There is a knock at the front door. Your father walks to the front door, and the FBI is at the front door with a warrant to search the house. The FBI are looking to find three suspects that were involved in the armed robbery and murder case. Your father allows the FBI inside. The FBI recognizes your two brothers from the photos and video. The FBI also recognizes the third suspect, from the video footage that is from outside the gas station store, and that third suspect, is you. Your father is shocked and speechless as he watches all three of his sons being handcuffed and taken into custody. A court date is immediately set. As it turns out, your two brothers, and yourself are going to stand trial. The Judge presiding over the case is, your own Father. At the end of the trial, your father, the Judge, has no choice but to hand down the consequences to all three of his own sons. Heartbroken, your Father hands down the consequences: His two sons, the “drivers” who premeditated and carried out the crime, are given life in prison, with no possibility of parole. Your father knows you were not involved in the crime itself. But because he is a fair Judge, he knows he must give you a consequence also. You, the “captive,” are given life in prison, but with the possibility of parole. A life sentence, yes, but, with the possibility of parole, that makes your sentence a little fairer, for you. To break it down very clear: “Drivers” premeditated the crime, then intentionally carried out that crime. “Drivers” receive life in prison, with no possibility of parole. The “Captive” was seduced or tricked into coming along for the ride, without knowing there was going to be a crime. The “Captive” did not participate in the crime but is guilty by association. The “Captive” could have refused to get in the vehicle in the first place. The “Captive” receives life in prison, but with the possibility of parole. That is the difference between the “Drivers” and the “Captives” in this concept. Remember this concept, because it will come into play later in this book. Hebrew and Greek Words I believe that the LORD God is fully capable of preserving two things: 1. His Words 2. The Definitions of His Words The Word of God was written many thousands of years ago, in a very different language. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew. The New Testament was written in Greek. Each Hebrew and Greek word can have 1 or 2 or 3 or 4+ different possible definitions, and a set of “Synonyms” to help with understanding. Just like your own current language, there are “Root” words, and from that “Root” word, the word branches out to different words, with slightly different meanings as it changes from a noun to a verb or adjective. (or any combination, verb to adjective to noun, etc.). Examples: Act, Actor, Acting. Build, Built, Builders, Building. Reserve, Reserved, Reserving. Believe, Believer, Believing. These are just a few examples, but I hope you get the idea. Hebrew and Greek words are no different, the same concept applies. Let’s Break Down a set of Hebrew Words: ‛âtsab, ‛etseb, ‛ôtseb This is how it works: ‛âtsab: Verb: a primitive root; Definition: properly to carve, that is, fabricate or fashion; hence (in a bad sense) to worry, pain or anger: ‛âtsab: becomes ‛etseb: ‛etseb: Noun: Definition: (from ‛âtsab) an earthen vessel; usually (painful) toil; also a pang (whether body or mind): ‛ôtseb: is a variation of ‛etseb: (variation = practically the same word). ‛ôtseb: Noun: Definition: an idol (as fashioned); also pain (bodily or mental) It takes a bit of practice, but it is easier the more you practice. So, let’s do a practice run applying that knowledge of the Hebrew word: Sorrow: ‛ôtseb: an idol (as fashioned); also pain (bodily or mental) Sorrow: an Idol; an Earthen Vessel; Pain; synonymous. Practice Reading and Studying the Definitions Please open your King James Bible to Isaiah 14:3: Isaiah 14:3 And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve, The “Underlined” of Isaiah 14:3 are words we are going to break down so we can know what this verse is saying: LORD is Hebrew Word: yehôvâh: (the) self-Existent or eternal; Jehovah. Sorrow is Hebrew Word: ‛ôtseb: an idol (as fashioned); also pain (bodily or mental). Fear is Hebrew Word: rôgez: commotion, restlessness, crash, disquiet, anger. Hard Bondage is Hebrew Word: ‛ăbôdâh: work, labor, bondage, (slavery) (tillage). Wherein thou wast made to serve is one single Hebrew Word: ‛âbad: to work, serve, till, (causatively) enslave, etc – keep in bondage. So, by breaking down the definitions of the Hebrew Words individually, we can understand what this verse is saying: Let’s translate: “In The Day” that YOU are Born Again by Christ’s Holy Spirit.” Isaiah 14:3 – from the Definitions: And it shall come to pass in the day that the Self-Existent Eternal Jehovah shall give you REST from your idol, and from your anger/commotion, and from the slavery (slavery to sin) wherein you were enslaved, What a GREAT Message from the LORD! I don’t know about you, but I needed REST from all those things! Remember, Isaiah 14:3 is talking about, after you are Born Again by Christ’s Holy Spirit. Let me break down a very small part of that verse using the Hebrew word, “Sorrow”: Sorrow: ‛ôtseb: an idol; Hence Variation of ‛etseb: an earthen vessel: The LORD will give you REST from your “idol.” The LORD will give you REST from your “earthen vessel.” Sorrow is your idol (pain) and Sorrow is your earthen vessel.

ABSTRACT “The Good Angel of Practical Fraternity:” The Ku Klux Klan in McLennan County, 1915-1924. Richard H. Fair, M.A. Mentor: T. Michael Parrish, Ph.D. This thesis examines the culture of McLennan County surrounding the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s and its influence in central Texas. The pervasive violent nature of the area, specifically cases of lynching, allowed the Klan to return. Championing the ideals of the Reconstruction era Klan and the “Lost Cause” mentality of the Confederacy, the 1920s Klan incorporated a Protestant religious fundamentalism into their principles, along with nationalism and white supremacy. After gaining influence in McLennan County, Klansmen began participating in politics to further advance their interests. The disastrous 1922 Waco Agreement, concerning the election of a Texas Senator, and Felix D. Robertson’s gubernatorial campaign in 1924 represent the Klan’s first and last attempts to manipulate politics. These failed endeavors marked the Klan’s decline in McLennan County and Texas at large. “The Good Angel of Practical Fraternity:” The Ku Klux Klan in McLennan County, 1915-1924 by Richard H. February 2008 Bar Examination Question 1 Mom and Daddy are the divorced parents of Angel, their three year old daughter. According to Mom, she was bathing Angel after she returned home from a visitation with Daddy and Angel complained that “it hurt” around her genital area. Mom said she became concerned and questioned Angel about her complaint. She said Angel told her that she and Daddy had a “secret” that Daddy “rubbed” against her and made her hurt. Mom called the family physician, Dr. Kildare, and reported this to him. Dr. Kildare saw Angel and her mother that night at the emergency room at the local hospital. The hospital records regarding the emergency room visit contain an entry in the nurse’s notes from the now deceased Nurse Crockett indicating Angel told her “Mommy hurt me” when asked why she was at the hospital. Angel later told Dr. Kildare about the “secret” she and her Daddy had after Mom promised Angel a new doll and some ice cream. Then Dr. Kildare examined Angel and found redness and swelling in Angel’s genital area. Dr. Kildare concluded that “Angel had been sexually abused by Daddy.” He recommended that Angel be seen by a child psychologist, Dr. Feelgood. Dr. Feelgood saw Angel the following week. After interviewing, testing, and evaluating Angel he arrived at the opinion that “Angel showed no symptoms or indications of having been sexually abused.” Mom filed an action to terminate Daddy’s visitation privileges. The court, sua sponte, ordered Mom and Dad to undergo evaluations by Dr. Marcus Welby, a psychiatrist.

  • Slayage, Number 9: Abbott
Stacey Abbott Walking the Fine Line Between Angel and Angelus [1] Much of the discussion and analysis of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer has focused upon the show’s moral complexity in its representation of good and evil. Joss Whedon’s world is a world of grays rather than crisp black and white oppositions. The character Angel, the vampire with a soul, was one of the earliest introductions of this ambiguity into the series. The slayer and her friends were forced to accept that a vampire could be good. Difficult to accept but not as difficult as a loving boyfriend who can turn evil over night . again embodied in Angel. He offered the young Slayer, her friends and the audience a lot to think about in those first two seasons. While initially morally complex, as the series has developed and explored the far reaches of moral ambiguity through the actions of all of the Scooby Gang, Angel’s representation seems too neatly split across polar oppositions: the good Angel versus the evil Angelus. These two sides of Angel have been described by Beth Braun as “tortured soul” and “soulless demon” (90) and by Mary Alice Money as “soulful vampire extraordinaire” and “evil über-vampire” (98-99). [2] Rhonda V. Wilcox suggests, in “Every Night I Save You: Buffy, Spike, Sex and Redemption,” “[that] since Angel is good because he possesses a soul, he still represents an essentialist definition of good.” This is in contrast to the vampire Spike, who, she argues, “owns no human soul, yet repeatedly does good; if he can be seen as capable of change, capable of good, capable of love, then he can represent an existentialist definition of good” (paragraph 15).

RESEARCH REPORT Echinacea FOR THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION Sam Hoadley, Manager of Horticultural Research INTRODUCTION Skipper butterfly feeding on Echinacea ‘Glowing Dream’ 2 ECHINACEA FOR THE MID-ATLANTIC ECHINACEA, COMMONLY KNOWN AS CONEFLOWERS, are among the most iconic and recognizable native plants in North America. The earliest documented horticultural use of Echinacea can be traced to the late 17th century when Echinacea purpurea seeds were sent to England by the Virginia clergyman and naturalist John Banister. Medicinal use dates back even further as Native Americans used Echinacea to treat a variety of ailments, a tradition that has carried into modern times. Echinacea has enjoyed continued popularity for treating colds and for boosting the immune system. Although there is little scientific evidence of its benefits, Echinacea is currently one of the most popular commercially traded herbal supplements. The nine species of Echinacea are North American natives and predominantly occur in the central and eastern United States. The majority of wild coneflowers display pink, purple, and rarely white flowers from late spring to summer. Only one species, Echinacea paradoxa, breaks this color trend and produces canary yellow blooms in June. Dr. Jim Ault of the Chicago Botanic Garden was among the first plant breeders to intentionally cross multiple species in the 1990s. Since that time, the breeding and selection of coneflower species has further unlocked the horticultural potential of this genus resulting in a staggering variety of new cultivars in American and European horticultural markets. Today, Echinacea are available in an array of colors including, white, yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, and even green.

  • Advent, Christmas and Epiphany 2020 - 2021
Advent, Christmas and Epiphany 2020 - 2021 Short thoughts for every day from the beginning of Advent to the Epiphany Introduction The season of Advent begins in the darkened days of late November, several weeks before Christmas. Advent is part of the Christian Year, a season of sustained focus on particular aspects of spiritual formation. It is a season that points beyond itself—to Christmas and the joy it promises. Advent can seem a little strange to those unfamiliar with its traditions, themes, and prayers. Is it merely a historical exercise to pray the prayers of ancient Israel as they longed for the birth of their Saviour? Jesus has already come, hasn’t he? Most of us like Christmas; after all, it’s kind of like an extended birthday party for Jesus where we get the presents. But why spend weeks “anticipating” the birth of someone who’s already been born? The answer to this question draws us into the central purpose of Advent and the kind of spiritual formation we undergo when we celebrate it. At the core of Advent’s purpose is the discipline of patient, watchful anticipation. In the season of Advent, we train ourselves for watching and waiting. Most of us these days are pretty lousy at waiting. We live in a world whose entire modern economy is based on shrinking the space between feeling a desire and satisfying it. We expect our food to come quickly, the weekends can’t get here fast enough, we binge watch entire seasons of TV shows in a few nights, and even a few seconds of delay can cause us to abandon a web search in disgust.

  • Kafka's Angel
Kafka’s Angel: The Distance of God in a Post-Traditional World Matthew T. Powell Walsh University In June 1914, Franz Kafka found himself overwhelmed by his life. Struggling person- ally, professionally, and artistically he sat one night to compose a story in his diary of a man confronted by the Divine. In this story, never published outside of his diary, Kafka sought to measure the distance between God and the individual in a post-traditional world. The result was the story of an aborted mystical experence in which Kafka defined the post-traditional existential experience in terms of failure. In so doing, Kafka also defined the post-modern existential condition in terms of the overwhelming distance the individual feels from God. “An angel, then!” I thought; “it has been flying towards me all the day and in my disbelief I did not know it. Now it will speak to me.” —Franz Kafka, The Diaries (June 25, 1914) In the middle months of 1914, Franz Kafka found himself drowning in a whirlpool of expectations, desires, and choices. In these months of personal, professional, and artistic crisis Kafka struggled to locate his authentic path in life; and he struggled with the very idea of living. The year 1914 began for Kafka with a proposal of marriage to his then long time girlfriend, Felice Bauer. And the year 1914 ended for Kafka in a flurry of artistic creativity that produced one of the seminal novels of the twentieth century, Der Prozess (The Trial). In the intervening months Kafka struggled almost continuously with the most fundamental choices of his existence: between marriage and bachelorhood; between a steady, well-paid, professional position and the hand-to-mouth existence of a reclusive writer; between community and isolation; and between death and life.
