Collectively, the projects we support represent Targum Shlishi’s beliefs and hopes. Some projects are practical and straightforward. Others are more creative and far-reaching. Some are practically guaranteed to meet with success. Others are risks. All point the way to a better present and future for the Jewish people the world over. The projects are grouped by category, beginning with our primary areas of focus: education, women’s issues, Israel, and justice for Nazi war crimes. There are other sections of the report: “Special Projects” describes projects that don’t fit into the four major categories, “In the Works” lists projects in early development, “Ongoing Projects” provides an update on projects that are continuing, and “Additional Recipients” lists projects to which Targum Shlishi contributes smaller amounts of general support.

  • 1 Jews, Gentiles, and the Modern Egalitarian Ethos
Jews, Gentiles, and the Modern Egalitarian Ethos: Some Tentative Thoughts David Berger The deep and systemic tension between contemporary egalitarianism and many authoritative Jewish texts about gentiles takes varying forms. Most Orthodox Jews remain untroubled by some aspects of this tension, understanding that Judaism’s affirmation of chosenness and hierarchy can inspire and ennoble without denigrating others. In other instances, affirmations of metaphysical differences between Jews and gentiles can take a form that makes many of us uncomfortable, but we have the legitimate option of regarding them as non-authoritative. Finally and most disturbing, there are positions affirmed by standard halakhic sources from the Talmud to the Shulhan Arukh that apparently stand in stark contrast to values taken for granted in the modern West and taught in other sections of the Torah itself. Let me begin with a few brief observations about the first two categories and proceed to somewhat more extended ruminations about the third. Critics ranging from medieval Christians to Mordecai Kaplan have directed withering fire at the doctrine of the chosenness of Israel. Nonetheless, if we examine an overarching pattern in the earliest chapters of the Torah, we discover, I believe, that this choice emerges in a universalist context. The famous statement in the Mishnah (Sanhedrin 4:5) that Adam was created singly so that no one would be able to say, “My father is greater than yours” underscores the universality of the original divine intent. While we can never know the purpose of creation, one plausible objective in light of the narrative in Genesis is the opportunity to actualize the values of justice and lovingkindness through the behavior of creatures who subordinate themselves to the will 1 of God.

  • Central and Eastern Europe
Central and Eastern Europe Germany National Affairs X. JLALFWAY THROUGH Chancellor Gerhard Schroder's four-year term it was clear that his Red-Green coalition—his own Social Democratic Party (SPD) together with the environmentalist Greens—had succeeded in co-opting the traditional agenda of the opposition Christian Democrats (CDU), leaving the opposition without a substantial issue. The government accomplished this by moving to the political center, primarily through a set of pro-business tax cuts that were expected to spur the economy. The conservative opposition was also handicapped by scandal. Former chan- cellor Helmut Kohl shocked the nation at the end of 1999 by refusing to clarify his role in the CDU's financial irregularities, and in January 2000 he resigned as honorary chairman of the party. The affair continued to get headlines through- out 2000 as more illegal payments during the Kohl years came to light. All that Kohl himself would acknowledge was his personal receipt of some $1 million not accounted for in the party's financial records, but he refused to name the donors. Considering his "word of honor" not to divulge the source of the money more important than the German law requiring him to do so, he compared his treat- ment by the German mass media to the Nazi boycott of Jewish stores during the Hitler regime. Most observers believed that Kohl would end up paying a fine and would not serve any jail time. The Kohl scandal triggered an internal party upheaval. Wolfgang Schauble, Kohl's successor as CDU leader, admitted in February that he too had taken un- reported campaign contributions, and was forced to resign.

Accordingly, they are no different than other dissident movements throughout our history that have rejected these basic tenets. We therefore inform the public that in our considered opinion, “Open Orthodoxy” is not a form of Torah Judaism (Orthodoxy), and that any rabbinic ordination (which they call “semicha”) granted by any of its affiliated entities to their graduates does not confer upon them any rabbinic authority. May the Almighty have mercy on the remnants of His people and repair all breaches in the walls of the Torah, and may we be worthy to witness the raising of the glory of Hashem and His sacred Torah.

Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah Confront Growing Challenges to Religious Freedom January 6, 2021 Photo credit: Cédric Puisney from Brussels, Belgium, CC BY 2.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0>, via Wikimedia Commons “It starts with shechita (ritual slaughter), continues withmila (ritual circumcision), and then they start to close down Orthodox Jewish schools,” so asserted Chief Rabbi of Moscow Pinchas Goldschmidt in addressing a meeting of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah (Council of Torah Sages), senior rabbinic governing board of Agudath Israel of America. Rabbi Goldschmidt was appealing to the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah for their, and Agudath Israel’s, assistance in galvanizing support to fend off growing challenges to Jewish religious life in Europe. As current President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Rabbi Goldschmidt has been extremely active on all matters pertaining to the rights and well-being of the 1.5 million Jews – 90% of whom affiliate with Orthodoxy – living on the European continent. Rabbi Goldschmidt’s presentation to the senior rabbinic leaders focused on the dangers, in both short and long terms, of the recent decision of the European Union’s Court of Justice to allow member countries to ban the practice of ritual slaughter under Jewish and Muslim dietary laws. The case originated in Belgium, where nearly two years ago laws were passed in the Flanders and Wallonia regions that require stunning prior to slaughter, effectively prohibiting shechita. These laws placed a substantial burden on religious liberty and on Jewish life in Belgium, as well as on those dependent on Belgian shechita living in other affected European countries.

  • The Holocaust: Factor in the Birth of Israel? by Evyatar Friesel
The Holocaust: Factor in the Birth of Israel? by Evyatar Friesel It is widely believed that the catastrophe of European Jewry during World War II had a decisive influence on the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948. According to this thesis, for the Jews the Holocaust triggered a supreme effort toward statehood, based on the understanding that only a Jewish state might again avoid the horrors of the 1940s. For the nations of the world, shocked by the horror of the extermination and burdened by feelings of guilt, the Holocaust convinced them that the Jews were entitled to a state of their own. All these assumptions seem extremely doubtful. They deserve careful re-examination in light of the historical evidence. Statehood in Zionist Thought The quest for a Jewish state had always been paramount in Zionist thought and action. For tactical reasons official Zionism was cautious in explaining its ultimate aims, especially when addressing general public opinion. Terms other than "state" were used in various political documents or official utterances by leading Zionist statesmen: Jewish home, Jewish National Home, commonwealth, Jewish commonwealth. But there is no reason to doubt that the ultimate aim of the Zionist mainstream was the creation of a state in Palestine. The question remained as to what methods should be used in order to reach the consummation of these hopes. One possibility was the evolutionary path, implied also in the political relations between the Zionists and leading British statesmen between 1917 and 1920. It found implicit expression in the terms and the structure of the Palestine Mandate approved by the League of Nations in July 1922.
