Finale: Allegro energico Joshua Bell, Soloist/Director Academy of St Martin in the Fields Master of More than Melody The works presented here are two out of the three pieces by Max Bruch that can be called staples of the classical repertoire. (The third is his piece for cello and orchestra, Kol Nidrei.) In his lifetime he was best known for large-scale choral works, well received at their premieres and popular with the many amateur choral societies found throughout Europe in the later 19th century. Those choruses began to dwindle once the 20th century got underway. As they disappeared, Bruch’s cantatas and oratorios also faded from consciousness, rarely, if ever, to be heard again. By association, Bruch became thought of as a composer whose time had come and gone. It is interesting to compare the very diff erent assessments of him in two successive editions of Grove’s Dictionary of Music, from 1904 and 1954. The earlier edition declared: “He is above all a master of melody, and of the eff ective treatment of masses of sound.” By 1954 the verdict on his output was dismissive and condescending: ‘It is its lack of adventure that limited its fame.’ Bruch was born during the lifetimes of Mendelssohn and Schumann and died when Schoenberg and Stravinsky were creating gigantic waves in musical life.

    Apunte Biográfico Queridos sorianos y amigos del Otoño Musical Soriano: Cuando me puse a redactar estas líneas biográficas sobre el maestro Odón Alonso una gran incertidumbre me sobrecogió: ¿Qué puedo yo decirle a los sorianos y a los amigos del Otoño Musical Soriano sobre el maestro Alonso que ellos, a estas alturas, ya no sepan? Durante dieciocho años han sido ustedes testigos del hacer musical como artista, como director y como programador y gestor de una de las más grandes figuras de la música española de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Han podido disfrutar de su exquisito gusto por la música que en cada edición del Otoño Musical trató de transmitirles a través de uno de los festivales más plurales e interesantes de cuantos se han creado en España en los últimos setenta años y, por si fuera poco, dado el carácter afable del maestro, también han podido apreciar su siempre agradable y educada conversación, su inherente y elegante sencillez y discreción, y sus otras muchas virtudes que en lo personal el maestro atesoraba. De manera que, escribir sobre el maestro Alonso para un público que conoce tan bien al artista, al director, al músico y a la persona, es una responsabilidad que asumo con gusto en esta ocasión que tanta importancia tiene y tantos sentimientos suscita en mí. El maestro Odón Alonso Ordás nació el 28 de febrero de 1925 en la localidad leonesa de La Bañeza. Desde muy niño mostró una natural disposición hacia la música que guiado de la mano de su padre, hombre muy aficionado a la música y con un saber y un sentir musical excepcionales, dio en consecuencia que el maestro Alonso creciera amando la música en sus diferentes vertientes, estilos y géneros.
