Catalogue of Type Specimens Housed in the Museum of Paleontology-Stratigraphy, Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca ACTA PALAEONTOLOGICA ROMANIAE (2016) V. 12(1), P. 3-23 CATALOGUE OF TYPE SPECIMENS HOUSED IN THE MUSEUM OF PALEONTOLOGY-STRATIGRAPHY, BABEŞ-BOLYAI UNIVERSITY, CLUJ-NAPOCA Liana Săsăran Received: 9 February 2016 / Accepted: 10 March 2016 / Published online: 17 March 2016 Abstract Paleontological collections of type specimens housed in museums represent a significant database for the scientific community. To be easily available for researchers worldwide, these collections should be well-organized, curated and recorded in online databases. The first step towards a comprehensive understanding of the type collections stored in our museum consists in drafting the catalogue of fossil type specimens. Such a comprehensive listing of type specimens of fossil plantae, invertebrates and vertebrates, currently registered in the collections of the Museum of Paleontology-Stratigraphy, Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca (MPS-BBU-CN) is presented here. Keywords: type specimens, paleontological collections, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. INTRODUCTION MATERIAL AND METHODS The collections of the Mineralogy and Geology Museum The first catalogue of type specimens housed in the of Cluj University were created in the 19th century, after paleontological collection of the Museum of the foundation of the Franz Joseph University in 1872 in Paleontology-Stratigraphy was assembled by Tămaş & Kolozsvár (today: Cluj-Napoca, Romania). Initially Şuraru (1973), and it includes 118 holotypes and created as simple collections used for teaching and paratypes described before 1973; however, this catalogue research, the geological collections of Cluj University did not included the paleobotanical type specimens. developed and grew gradually, and were therefore Instead, two years later, Givulescu (1975a) listed the divided later into two museums: the Museum of paleobotanical type specimens kept in the collections of Mineralogy and the Museum of Paleontology- Geological-Paleontological Institut of Cluj University in Stratigraphy, currently both open to the scientific his “Monography of the fossil flora holotypes described community and to the general public. The in Romania”. Years later, a short note, restricted only to palaeontological collections housed in these museums the holotypes from the Eocene of the Transylvanian contain valuable evidences of the early life, reflecting its Basin, has been published by Tămaş (1987), but no paleobiodiversity, and represent thus a significant comprehensive update of the Tămaş & Şuraru (1973) database for researchers. In order to make these catalogue was prepared in the 40 years that followed its collections available to the scientific community, they publication. The purpose of the catalogue we prepared is should be well-organized, curated, and recorded in online to give a detailed and up-to-date account of the type databases. Collections of type specimens are among the material on record at the Museum of Paleontology- most important scientific collections of any Stratigraphy from Cluj-Napoca. It includes type paleontological museum. Type specimens represent the specimens currently preserved in the collections, as well fossil specimens used in the original description of a new as those types known or believed to be lost or missing, species (e.g. holotype, paratype, syntype etc.). but which were mentioned to belong to our museum in Concerning such type specimens, the International the original publications. Commission on Zoological Nomenclature created a During the last years, specific inventory, evaluation and system of rules and recommendations, published in the monitoring procedures of paleontological collections International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, have been introduced, and by their means, 294 1999). The provisions of the ICZN strongly recommend paleobotanical and palaeozoological taxa represented by that each museum or institution housing type specimens type specimens have been identified. Palaeobotanical has the responsibility to provide researchers worldwide type specimens, represented by fossil algae and plant with a published catalogue containing the taxonomic list remains such as leaf impressions, fruits and fossil wood, of the specimens in their custody. In accordance with this consist of 127 holotypes and paratypes that were requirement, we present hereis an updated catalogue of published by Unger (1 type specimen), Staub (8), the type specimens found in the scientific collections of Andreánszky (1), Givulescu (46), Petrescu (40), Fuchs the Museum of Paleontology-Stratigraphy, Babeş-Bolyai (1), Plămadă (1), Mai (1) Bucur (27) and Iamandei (1). • CHAPTER 1 Thallophyta 1
Downloaded from http://sp.lyellcollection.org/ by guest on September 24, 2021 CHAPTER 1 Thallophyta 1 Contributors: H. P. BANKS, K. I. M. CHESTERS, N. F. HUGHES, G. A. L. JOHNSON, H. M. JOHNSON & L. R. MOORE This chapter includes all benthonic algae (planktonic algae are in Chapter 2), the family Prototaxitaceae, bacteria and fungi. In some of these groups the fossil record is very inadequate, and the method of documentation has been varied accordingly. THE CALCAREOUS ALGAE Algae are the only fossil group which have a widespread development in the Precamb. The earliest fossil records, dating from at least 2700 m.y., are stromatolites possibly belonging to the Chlorophyceae and Cyanophyceae. Definite cellular microorganisms, including Gunflintia, Animikiea and Archaeorestis identified as blue-green algae, have been found in the Gunffint Chert, M. Precamb, Canada, and are 1900 m.y. old (Barghoorn and Tyler 1965; Cloud 1965). Even at the earliest period there seems to have been considerable diversity in the group and since then continuous evolutionary progress has taken place. Divergence, convergence and parallelism of form and habit in the different classes of algae during their geological history is striking (Fritsch 1948). Thus the structural pattern of the Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae and in most part the Rhodophyceae is remarkably parallel from unicellular motile and colonial, through filamentous to complex thaUoid forms. The great majority of living algae do not produce skeletons but of the known fossil algae almost every genus is calcareous and many are important rock builders. Maslov (1961) has shown that carbonates can be deposited by algae in six different ways.

  • Description and Comparison
A new durophagous scincomorphan lizard genus from the Late Cretaceous Iharkút locality (Hungary, Bakony Mts) László Makádia,b,c,* and Randall L. Nydamd a Geological and Geophysical Collections, Geological and Geophysical Institute of Hungary, Budapest, Hungary b Department of Paleontology and Geology, Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, Hungary c Department of Paleontology, Eötvös University, Budapest, Hungary d Department of Anatomy, Midwestern University, Glendale, Arizona, USA * Corresponding author, email: [email protected], phone: +36-1-251-0999/373 Abstract The Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) Iharkút terrestrial vertebrate locality in Hungary has already yielded scincomorphan taxa such as the polyglyphanodontines Bicuspidon and Distortodon, and the chamopsiid Pelsochamops. Besides these, more lacertilian material is available, including a single right mandible, different from both the above mentioned genera from Iharkút, and from other previously known taxa. This specimen is described here as Chromatogenys tiliquoides gen. nov. sp. nov. The open Meckelian canal, the wide subdental shelf with deep sulcus dentalis, and the pleurodont teeth support referral of the specimen to Scincomorpha. Within that, Chromatogenys differs from groups known from Iharkút, such as polyglyphanodontines and chamopsiids, and is also distinct from other contemporary scincomorphs from Europe, North America and Asia. It exhibits a combination of mixed characters, some of which are shared by scincids, cordylids and contogeniids. Chromatogenys might be a representative of a new family within Scincomorpha but currently should be 1 considered of uncertain familiar relationships (familia incertae sedis) until more material is found. Chromatogenys had a durophagous dentition similar to extant skinks such as Tiliqua, and most probably had similar diet composed of molluscs, eggs, insects, small vertebrates and fruits.
