October 2015 Traditional religion and political power: Examining the role of the church in Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine and Moldova Edited by Adam Hug The publication examines the political and social role of the Orthodox Churches in Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova and of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It explores the ways in which the churches have contributed to the development of national identities since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the role they play in civil society. Maia Tsertsvadze Participants of the Conspiracy of 1832 as presented in the epistolary heritage by N. Baratashvili Abstract: A small-sized epistolary work (18 personal letters) by Nikoloz Baratashvili, a Georgian romantic poet (1817-1845) presents significant material, not only for the exploration of the author’s way of life and creative works but also for the characterisation of the socio-political life of Georgia in the first part of the 19th century. Due to his noble origin (on his mother’s side Nikoloz Baratashvili was a direct descendent of the Kartli-Kakheti branch of the Bagrationi Royal family), Nikoloz Baratashvili lived among the country’s political and cultural elite. As well as this, he had an active contact with the participants of an orginised conspiracy of the nobles of 1832 against the Russian Empire. Moreover, the participants of this event make up a major part of the people mentioned in his personal letters which gives the letters certain significance from the point of view of historiography of the conspiracy. The present research aims at collecting the biographical data regarding the participants of the conspiracy and exploring their interrelationship to the poet. Despite its small size (only 18 of his personal letters have reached us) it presents valuable material regarding, primarily, the life and creative works of the author, his political beliefs, worldview, world perception and a spiritual biography of the poet. -

Mzia Chikhradze Modernism and Identity The paradigm of modernism places it in a cosmopolitan area. The desire to become integrated into a unified artistic space generates not only common, similar artistic trends in modernist art, but also severely limits the borders between the specific national derivatives within it. Coupled with the fact that “national” became a dangerous and unpopular topic after World War I, the modernism that developed in Central Europe developed as an anti-national phenomenon. Georgia enjoyed a short period of independence from 1918 to 1921. Not only Georgian modernism, but also the distinctive model of the Tbilisi avant-garde flourished during this time. It was based on a creative collaboration between different nationalities, their multinational and intercultural art. The specificity of the Tbilisi avant-garde was characterized by integrating different national characteristics into a unified artistic system. Despite the artists’ differing individual and national backgrounds, a unified artistic language was formed and this unique language determined the emerging art’s diversity and vivid imagery. The art and culture that developed in the bosom of independent Georgia generally carried a trace of Georgian national characteristics. The question arises: How organic and relevant is distinctiveness by national features in the context of modernism, which, as already mentioned, promotes cosmopolitanism. The priority of nationality should be considered as a hindering factor in terms of modernist values. However, the specifics of Georgian modernism and the Tbilisi avant-garde differed from the European ones. Namely, as Italian futurism stated and Tommaso Marinetti, its founding father, wrote in his Manifesto of Futurism: “We want to destroy museums and libraries, fight against morality, feminism, and all opportunist and utilitarian cowardice .. -

She preferred to let her pain incubate, to let it fester. So when her elderly neighbor Beatrice woke her up, shortly past midnight, to celebrate Easter and share a boiled egg, as red as blood, she was both irritated and bemused. What kind of person bangs on their neighbor’s door in the middle of the night to share an egg? she wondered to herself. When Beatrice informed her that her son wanted to show her Old Tbilisi, and to introduce her to the history and culture of the city where he had been born and raised, Teresa agreed. But she was less than pleased. “I’m leaving for America the next day,” she warned her neighbor, “So I’ll have to finish early.” Beatrice shook Teresa’s hand before she parted that night, winked slyly, and insisted she take another egg. “I’ll be gone that day,” Beatrice added before she parted, “But you and Irakli will have fun.” All that month, Teresa had been cooped up in her apartment. Meditating. Mostly about a man she had never met, but whom she knew better than her own soul. They shared in common a passion for certain obscure subjects, like Arabic epigraphy and Persian paleography. More than that, they shared expertise in the peculiar annotations that itinerate Sogdian merchants of early modern Central Asia made on Arabic manuscripts, in a handwriting all their own. -
