Andrew Fontein - Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Finalist

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of finalists follows this release.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. The award program is designed exclu- sively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards a senior season can bring.

Classroom Fontein, a business economics major, will graduate early in December of 2011. He plans to pursue an MBA and after playing soccer would like to become a CPA. As part of his academic studies, he conducted field research as part of an education class and tutored K-12 students.

Character Fontein is a person who leads by example and has the admiration of his peers due to his work ethic, on-field performances and giving attitude. Through his dedication both on and off the field, he continues to raise the bar for future players at UC Irvine.

Community Fontein has helped kids in an after school program at Culverdale Elementary and been active with Soccer for Hope, a camp for kids with cancer. He helped with a program at Willard Junior High School, an under-represented community in Santa Ana, Calif., by encouraging kids to stay in school and continue on to college. He volunteered at a senior citizen center as prep and most recently has coached kids at AYSO camps and Newport Harbor High School.

Competition Fontein has established himself as one of the top goalies in UC Irvine history. He is a two-time All-Big West second-team honoree and was named to the Col- lege Soccer News National Team twice in his career. As a freshman, he was recognized as the Big West Freshman of the Year and honored on the Soccer America and College Soccer News All-Freshman Teams. He also secured a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com All-Rookie Team that same year. Last season, Fontein came away with NSCAA National Player of the Week honors and was a Big West Player of the Week twice. He is the UC Irvine all-time leader in shut- outs (20), goals-against average (0.83), goalkeeper wins (34) and winning percentage (.791). He enters his senior year sixth in career goalie saves with 165. Fontein is the UCI single-season record holder in shutouts with 11, goals-against average at 0.59 and goalie wins with 14, all marks which were recorded in 2010. He made the top 10 of the single-season annals in goalie wins and winning percentage all three years at UCI.
