Well, maybe not all sweet ad some of it might be spicy. Spicy, as in “that was some good chili” spicy! Yep, last weekend was the annual GTA Chili Cook-off, and it was fun. Read about it later in the newsletter. One of the tasks of the president of a club such as ours is to sweet talk, bribe or otherwise cajole folks to assist you in running the club. We’ve been lucky to have some great folks step up and in to help… thank you Sue, Mike, Jim, Jim, Mark, Howard, Glenn, and Tom. However, Mark Post is serving us after he asked to step back a little so we were in need of a person, or persons to help fill the role of GTA Activities Director. The good news is we found a person willing to step forward, but the even better news is that we found not one, not two, but three. So join me in thanking Susan Young and Pam and Dan Quartarone for stepping forward as GTA Activity Directors. Please notice that they are directors and are not in charge of planning all the activities. That’s your role as members to suggest, plan, and assist in the fun stuff even if it’s in a supporting role. Spring has not sprung yet, but it will be here soon.. I hope. We are making a St. Patty’s Day drive an annual event so join us as we head to Terrapin Brewery in Athens on March 14th. Plenty more events, tech sessions and social events are on the calendar or will be loaded shortly. Did I mention that my car is running? Yep, fingers crossed I’m ready for another driving season. I’m still not sure what happened, but for now I’m not going to focus on that. I hope you are working on or otherwise getting your car ready. February we reinstitute the NW Atlanta meetings for the even months at Mazzy’s Marietta, and wouldn’t you know it the weather was horrible. Attendance was affected, but we’ll be back in April so come on out. And even though the !2 Volume 36, Issue 03 March 2020 weather was wet, wet I tell you, we did have a GTA member actually drive his Triumph make the trip. Yes, Bill Corn drove his TR7, which should remind us that these old cars once served as daily drivers. That’s about if for now; did that qualify as short & sweet? Well, like you, we all have a lot on our plate in addition to sweet sounding yet prone to leak a little oil every now and then vehicles. We can’t do it all, but come out and as we like to say in Louisiana… pass a good time. Oh, and a belated Happy Mardi Gras! See you down the road, Ashford PS: last night’s sunset during my daughter’s lacrosse game was spectacular! !3 Volume 36, Issue 03 March 2020 Southside Report On a cold a very rainy February night the Southside GTA met with a large and lively group of 17 Triumph enthusiast in attendance. Much time was spent lamenting the weather and it’s affect on d r i v i n g t i m e a n d m a i n t e n a n c e endeavors. We did have updates on ongoing p ro j e c t s ra n g i n g f ro m I n t e r i o r modifications and transmission change outs on TR-6’s to complete frame off restoration of a TR-3. As usual, the group found something to poke fun at. Along with project updates we discussed upcoming calendar events which included the GTA Chili Cook-off and the annual right of spring, The Mitty. Meeting was adjourned with hopes for a dry day and some top down driving. !4 Volume 36, Issue 03 March 2020 Mountain division Report The Mountain Division GTA Monthly Meeting When Tuesday, March 17, 11:30am – 1:30pm Where Shenanigans Irish Pub, 87 N Chestatee St, Dahlonega, GA 30533 ! !5 Volume 36, Issue 03 March 2020 GTA February Monthly Meeting GTA Monthly Meeting February 18, 2020 The meeting was held at Mazzy’s Marietta location where we have met in the past. The Marietta location was chosen to allow better access to north side GTA members. As luck would have it, the weather was horrible. There were only 5 people in attendance, none of whom lives in that area. Bill Corn, Earl Ferguson, Howard Orr, Ashford Little and Jim Orr were in attendance. Bill Corn actually drove his nice dry recently re-hooded white TR7 – the only Triumph automobile in attendance, sat in puddles outside while we dined. The agenda was much abbreviated because of the low turnout. We discussed the usually car stuff and no GTA business was discussed. Attendees enjoyed visiting and were reminded of the quite extensive and very reasonably priced menu that Mazzy’s offers. They availed us of their private meeting room which makes for much better group discussions. What was desired was a show that would display cars that were both new and old, foreign and domestic, bone stock and wildly modified all together in the same lot. Atlanta Garage Party When Friday, March 20, 8:00pm – 11:00pm Where TBD Description http://atlgarageparty.com/attend.htm The Atlanta Garage Party is a monthly social event for people who own collectable or modified cars of any condition, and work on them themselves. It takes place somewhere in the larger metro-Atlanta area on every third Friday of the month, at ~8pm. Usually it lasts to between 11pm and midnight. It is not for people who only read car magazines and watch Top Gear, or collect cars that others work on.

    Old Friends A P Valentine 1998 b H A. P Indy – Twenty Eight Carat (Alydar) On February 14, 1998, Alydar’s daughter Twenty Eight Carat delivered a special valentine, a handsome bay son by A. P. Indy. He was raced by former University of Kentucky Wildcats coach Rick Pitino’s Ol’ Memorial Stable (then called Celtic Pride Stable), and it’s not hard to guess why they named him A P Valentine. A grandson of Seattle Slew and great-grandson of Secretariat, he raced from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito. At two he won the 2000 Champagne Stakes. At three he was a favorite for the Kentucky Derby, and in both the 2001 Preakness and Belmont Stakes he finished second to Point Given. Eventually retired with $864,170 earnings, he began an enthusiastically heralded breeding career at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, but—ironically for a horse named Valentine—he proved infertile. Reproductive specialist Dr. Phillip McCarthy restored a measure of fertility and at Watercress Farm in Kentucky, then Cedar Creek Farm in Texas, A P Valentine sired 28 registered foals. 21 of them became racehorses, and two, A P Valor and Ifonlyjohnny, earned more than $100,000 apiece.     Old Friends Danthebluegrassman 1999 ch G, Pioneering – Stay with Bruce (Grey Dawn) Dan’s life has been a roller coaster. Sired by the royally bred Pioneering (a son of Mr. Prospector and Secretariat’s magnificent daughter Terlingua), Dan was bred by Ledgeland Farms and sold by consignor Dan Mallory to Michael Pegram. Named after Las Vegas raconteur Dan Chandler (son of Governor, Senator and Baseball Commissioner A. B. “Happy” Chandler and uncle of U. S. Representative Ben Chandler) and trained by Bob Baffert, the big chestnut colt certainly began his career among powerful names. As a 2 year old he won the Gold Rush Stakes in wire-to-wire fashion. As a 3 year old he took the 2002 Derby trail via a win in the Golden Gate Derby (G3) and a close second in the El Camino Derby, scoring the earnings to run in the Kentucky Derby. As it turned out, Dan was scratched out of the Derby, but in June he captured the Northern Dancer Stakes at Churchill Downs. For the next six years Dan continued racing, but eventually, his best racing behind him, he descended through the claiming ranks. In early 2008 Jim Ponte and Tim Ford expedited his retirement to Old Friends. Dan’s return to Kentucky was celebrated at the Old Friends 2008 Homecoming, where the Gallatin County Youth Bluegrass Band performed their “Ballad of Danthebluegrassman,” and he was honored at the National Bluegrass Festival at the Kentucky Horse Park. His roaming days now done, Dan has settled contentedly into life at Old Friends. His gentle disposition and gleaming chestnut coat have made him a big favorite with kids and adults alike.

For the uninitiated, the Breeders' Cup is like the World Series, NHL and NBA all in one day. And you might as well toss in the Super Bowl. Over the years, I've attended a dozen Breeders' Cups. I saw Precisionist win the 1985 Sprint at Aqueduct, and Fraise nip Sky Classic in the 1992 Turf at Gulfstream Park, and Black Tie Af fair’s dominating victory in the 1991 Classic at Churchill Downs. Now, they are all buried at Old Friends. And, while their exhilarating athleticism in front of a grandstand exploding with screaming fans still gets my heart pumping, it's their last days, with just a handful of us, that I remember the most. They all showed the same intelligence, grace and courage at the end as they did at the beginning. As we await the 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, I can walk around the farm and feed carrots to Classic winner Alphabet Soup (1996), Turf winner Little Mike (2012), Sprint winner Amazombie (2011), Marathoner Eldaafer (2010), and dozens of others who participated, including Silver Charm, Hidden Lake, Affirmed Success, Tinners Way, Touch Gold, and Game on Dude.

MAX PLAYER: This son of Honor Code is managed by George Hall, a Versailles neighbor, so he's selected by LINE OF DAVID who boards at Alfred Nuckols' Hurstland Farm in Woodford County. 3. ENFORCEABLE: One of great Tapit's sons, he's endorsed by JIMBO FALLON because grays need to stick together. 4. STORM THE COURT: This Gulch grandson might prefer the grass but, nevertheless, EINSTEIN, who could run on anything, is sticking with him. 5. MAJOR FED: Our TOUCH GOLD loves Major Fed because he was bred over at Adena Springs, TG’s old stomping grounds, and they owe a lot to the home team. 6. KING GUILLERMO: Aside from my personal fondness for former Boston Red Sox star and KG's owner, Victor Martinez, I won't let that interfere with SARAVA's selection. The season was about to kick off, but someone called an audible on us. The storyline started with curiosity and incredibility, but zoomed right past normal levels to something that none of us have ever experienced before. As a parent of three, two of which are at home doing the online school thing, I wondered how & why this was happening, but also watched as everything somewhat quietly unfolded. My first slap in the face of the new reality was a visit to Costco. I got there late… a half hour prior to opening. Things were surreal, but the management handled things very well. The public was orderly and respectful. That was about ten days ago. I have an elderly father and had been meaning to go visit so I thought I’d take an opportunity before the world shut down. My visit to the Mississippi Gulf Coast was a quick one with less than a 24 hour turnaround.

We always seem to be turning for home and pleading for more good fortune. Sometimes it doesn't happen the way we'd like it to. The untimely death of Charismatic is a tragic case in point. But, in May, in Kentucky, especially in horse racing, hope springs eternal. As it does, especial- ly here at Old Friends. We're working hard every day to provide dignified retirements to more of these deserving retirees, whether they be old claimers or classic winners. Official 2015 Old Friends Breeders’ Cup Program Welcome In 1984, under a sunnier sky than anything the Beach Boys ever evoked, I was at Hollywood Park waiting for the gates to spring open revealing the greatest idea in the history of horse racing—the Breeders' Cup. For the uninitiated, the Breeders' Cup is like the World Series, NHL and NBA all in one day. And you might as well toss in the Super Bowl. Over the years, I've attended a dozen Breeders' Cups. I saw Precisionist win the 1985 Sprint at Aqueduct, and Fraise nip Sky Classic in the 1992 Turf at Gulfstream Park, and Black Tie Affair’s dominating victory in the 1991 Classic at Churchill Downs. Now, they are all buried at Old Friends. And, while their exhilarating athleticism in front of a grandstand exploding with screaming fans still gets my heart pumping, it's their last days, with just a handful of us, that I remember the most. They all showed the same intelligence, grace and courage at the end as they did at the beginning. As we await the 31st running of the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland, I can walk around the farm and feed carrots to Sprint winners Gulch (1988) (he needs his shredded) and Amazombie (2011), and Marathoner Eldaafer (2010), and dozens of others who participated, including Silver Charm, Hidden Lake, Affirmed Success, Tinners Way and Game on Dude. I'm even more thrilled now than I was then. Proof, once again, of the eternal value of the Thoroughbred.
