Old Friends Silver Charm 1994 gr/ro H Silver Buck – Bonnie’s Poker (Poker) 1997 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Silver Charm was bred in Florida by Mary Lou Wootton. Owned by Robert and Beverley Lewis and trained by Bob Baffert, he leaped to a juvenile stakes win in the 1996 Del Mar Futurity (G2) ridden by David Flores, then hit the 1997 Derby trail with his San Vicente (G3) win, Chris McCarron up. The Kentucky Derby began Silver Charm’s partnership with jockey Gary Stevens. In a thrilling finish they prevailed over Captain Bodgit and Free House. A repeat performance in the Preakness raised Triple Crown hopes and Silver Charm ran a heroic Belmont, but he was edged out by Touch Gold. Silver Charm was awarded the 1997 Three Year Old Male Championship. In 1998, teamed with Stevens, he won the San Fernando (G2), Strub (G2) and prestigious Dubai World Cup (G1), Kentucky Cup Classic (3) and Goodwood (G2). A close second in the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic and win in the Clark (G2) rounded out this superlative campaign. At five, Silver Charm won the San Pasqual (G2). In his 24 starts he achieved 12 wins, 7 seconds and 2 thirds for $6,944,369. He entered stud in 2000 at Three Chimneys in Kentucky, was relocated in 2005 to Japan and stood at JBBA’s Stallion Stations until 2014. Silver Charm was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2007. He starts this week and will be involved at Churchill Downs, where the operation races three runners (two in stakes) this week in Louisville. “As a Hall of Fame inductee and as the rider of such legendary racehorses as Alysheba and John Henry, Chris is one of the most recognizable people in racing,” CEO Barry Irwin said. “But it is for his abilities as a communicator, his horsemanship and his drive as an organizer that he has been brought aboard. “I have worked alongside Chris as part of the initiative to introduce Federal legislation to rein in the use of legal and illegal drugs in our sport and I have been very impressed with his communication skills and his passion for the best aspects of our game.” McCarron’s most recent major career achievement in racing came when he realized a nearly life-long dream of establishing and nurturing America’s first school for jockeys. Named the North American Racing Academy, it is the only school where aspiring jockeys can earn a college degree. McCarron started NARA in 2005 and left it in safe hands in 2014. He continues to be an overseer of NARA. After retiring from a record-breaking and storied career as a jockey, McCarron served a stint as general manager at Santa Anita.

Old Friends A P Valentine 1998 b H A. P Indy – Twenty Eight Carat (Alydar) On February 14, 1998, Alydar’s daughter Twenty Eight Carat delivered a special valentine, a handsome bay son by A. P. Indy. He was raced by former University of Kentucky Wildcats coach Rick Pitino’s Ol’ Memorial Stable (then called Celtic Pride Stable), and it’s not hard to guess why they named him A P Valentine. A grandson of Seattle Slew and great-grandson of Secretariat, he raced from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito. At two he won the 2000 Champagne Stakes. At three he was a favorite for the Kentucky Derby, and in both the 2001 Preakness and Belmont Stakes he finished second to Point Given. Eventually retired with $864,170 earnings, he began an enthusiastically heralded breeding career at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, but—ironically for a horse named Valentine—he proved infertile. Reproductive specialist Dr. Phillip McCarthy restored a measure of fertility and at Watercress Farm in Kentucky, then Cedar Creek Farm in Texas, A P Valentine sired 28 registered foals. 21 of them became racehorses, and two, A P Valor and Ifonlyjohnny, earned more than $100,000 apiece. There are 2 more thoroughbred horse races that he has to enter and win in order to win the Triple Crown of thoroughbred Racing ... the Preakness and the Belmont. Can he do it? What are his chances? The three races that make up the Triple Crown are the (1) Kentucky Derby, the (2) Preakness Stakes, and the (3) Belmont Stakes. Kentucky Derby races began in 1875; Preakness races began in 1870; and the Belmont began in 1867. But in all of those years since these races began only 12 horses have won all three.
