Plans call for the ships to sail on two‐night cruises to Freeport on alterna ng days. Another cruise ship is a logical way for the port to boost revenues. The $117 billion cruise industry is growing, with a record 24.2 million passengers cruising globally in 2016 and 25.3 million forecast to sail this year. For the port, its simply a way to boost business. That need was more compelling than concerns about traffic, noise, boa ng safety, manatees, or the poten al need for DREDGING brought to the commissions a en on. On Aug. 17, the port commission unanimously approved a 10‐year agreement for the addi on of a second passenger ship. That is true for the port and for your business. Its cri cal for me as well that the local community benefit. Commission Chairman Blair CIKLIN said port officials plan to meet with Rivera Beach leaders to look at ways to encourage cruise passengers to spend more me in the area. A green market or shops at the Riviera Beach Marina Village just north of the port are possibili es The first ship has exceeded expecta ons. I understand this ship is even nicer, CIKLIN said. Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line has tenta ve plans to bring the NeoClassica from Greece in March. Cruises on the ship, which was renovated in 2014, are scheduled to start in May. Plans call for both ships to sail from the Riviera Beach port to Freeport on Grand Bahama Island on alterna ng days. The cruises have so far proved popular with Bahamian residents who come to Palm Beach County to shop. The cruise firm places the Bahamian passengers spend in Palm Beach County at $4.5 million a year. They go to Costco and load up. Now with Uber and stuff, it is easier for them, CIKLIN said. An economic boost will also be felt by the port. The port projects it will receive from $54.3 million to $62.9 million in net income from the two ships over the 10 years. We do know that large vessels and manatees can cohabitate. We want to make sure there is cau on and opportunity to try and mi gate and reduce any risk to manatees, Powell said, sugges ng that a risk assessment should be done. CIKLIN said the port would provide Powell informa on about the speed, dra and width of the ships. The Save Our Inlet Coali on also cri cized the port staff for not no fying commissioners, exis ng port tenants and surrounding communi es that it was considering a second ship. How could such a decision be made without a thorough and public review of the proposal, its impact on long‐standing and successful port tenants and input from surrounding communi es that would be impacted by the addi onal opera ons and passengers? The pilots will receive another $740,000 a year in fees for the new ship. While the pilots policy is to not allow vessels over 100 feet wide from entering the channel, the restric on may be adjusted to allow cruise ships due to their lighter dra s and advanced maneuvering characteris cs, the policy states. The proposal calls for the vessels to sail from the port every other day, on opposite days of each other. CRUISE BUSINESS AT THE PORT OF PALM BEACH CHANGES HANDS The NeoClassica, built in 1991, has 654 cabins, and its ameni es include three restaurants, a theater, disco and bars, casino ballroom, two swimming pools, four Jacuzzis, an outdoor jogging track and a wellness center with a gym. Over the last seven years, the port has received close to $20 million in net revenues from parking and passenger fees from the one cruise ship. It projects an addi onal $4 million this fiscal year from the Grand Celebra on, according to a report from Jarra Kaczwarra, the ports senior director of business development. In December, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, the company that previously operated the Grand Celebra on, was purchased by Paradise Cruise line. The Grand Celebra on is the largest passenger ship ever based at the port. Kevin Sheehan, former CEO and president of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, is a partner in Paradise Cruise Line. The Grand Celebra on, launched in January 2015, replaced the BAHAMAS CELEBRATION, which ran aground in Freeport on Halloween weekend in 2014.
