Directions for questions 9 and 10: Use the map to solve.

Roxie is delivering pizzas to the 7 houses on the map. She needs to deliver pizza to all the houses in 30 minutes or the pizza is free!

Distance Conversions

39.37 inches in 1 meter

5,280 feet in 1 mile

1,660 yards in 1 mile

0.621 miles in 1 kilometer

1,000 meters in 1 kilometer

9) Roxie says her driving time is 15.4 minutes because

Tulip Rd. Orchid Ln. Freesia Way Ivy Rd. 6.8 minutes + 3 minutes + 3.7 minutes + 1.9 minutes = 15.4 minutes.

Does Roxie have the correct driving time? Explain why or why not.

10) Roxie has included driving time in how long it will take her to make the deliveries. What else should she include in that time? Do you think she will make it in time?

Assessment Answers

Lesson 1: Convert a measurement of one unit to a measurement of another unit, and determine the conversion rate of two equivalent measures.

1) There are 82 feet in 27 1/3 yards.

2) There are 9.5 pounds in 152 ounces.

3) There are 640 acres in 1 square mile.

Lesson 2: Solve unit rate problems.

4) Neha will travel 14.4 miles in 1.2 hours.

5) 3.5 pounds of grapes will cost $11.13. The unit price for the grapes is $3.18/pound.

6) Suki will type 750 words in 20 minutes. She types at a rate of 37 words per minute.

Lesson 3: Make tables of equivalent ratios and plot the values on a coordinate plane.

b. No, Samantha did not use Irina’s recipe. Possible explanation: Samantha’s mixture would be the point (5, 9) on the graph because she has 5 tablespoons of ketchup for every 9 tablespoons of cocktail sauce. That point does not fit on the line in the graph. Irina uses a ratio of 1 tablespoon ketchup/1.375 tablespoons cocktail sauce. If Samantha used 5 tablespoons of ketchup, she would need to use 6.875 tablespoons of cocktail sauce to follow Irina’s recipe, which would be the point (5, 6.875).

c. When Irina makes more cocktail sauce, she uses more ketchup. As the line travels in the graph from (0, 0) to (16, 22) the amounts of ketchup and cocktail sauce both increase. If the line extends through 55 tablespoons of cocktail sauce, it will pass through the point (40, 55) meaning she uses 40 tablespoons of ketchup to make 55 tablespoons of cocktail sauce.

Lesson 4: Solve multi-step ratio problems.

8) Dai had 40 markers at first.

Dai:

Eve:

Lesson 5: Solve multi-step real-world problems involving rates and ratios.

9) Roxie does not have the correct travel time. She found the time it would take to drive down the side streets (Orchid Ln., Freesia Way, and Ivy Rd.), but she needs to drive back up each of those roads to make all of the deliveries. Roxie’s total driving time should be:

Tulip Rd. Orchid Ln. Freesia Way Ivy Rd. 6.8 minutes + 6 minutes + 7.4 minutes + 3.8 minutes = 24 minutes.

10) Roxie has not considered driving obstacles such as red lights, stop signs, traffic, accidents, pedestrians, and slow drivers. She has also not considered the time it takes her to stop the car, walk to the house, deliver the pizza, walk back to the car, and restart the car. I do not think she will make the deliveries in time because she has a total of 6 minutes left to account for all of this, and I think it will take her over a minute just to deliver the pizza to each house.
